2021 Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race T-Shirt Design Contest Winner

Since 1995, the design of the coveted T-shirt has been determined by the public through the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race T-shirt Design Contest. The public voted at ajc.com/peachtree from March 1-31 to determine which of the five design finalists would have his or her work grace the front of the shirt.

Traditionally, the front of the shirt is kept highly secret and not unveiled until the first participant crosses the finish line on race day. Because participants in the 2021 Virtual Peachtree would be receiving their T-shirts three weeks before, however, organizers determined that the winning design would be unveiled on June 2, Global Running Day.

The winner, 32-year-old Leah Knighton of Lithonia, wrote this about her design, “Keep Up That Peachtree Pace”:

“My brother, Zach, was the person that inspired me to enter this contest. He believed I had the ability to win it and I wanted to do it for him. My inspiration for this design is my pride in Georgia. I wanted it to be simple but still show the key things that we associate with our state. I wanted to include a road design that went through the whole state outline. Peachtree Street and Peachtree Road really embody how I perceive Atlanta. The area is filled with diversity, art, history, and community.”

For her win, Knighton was presented with a check for $1,000 at Atlanta Track Club offices on June 1. Read more about Knighton here in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race Magazine.

Safety and Security

Safety is Atlanta Track Club’s top priority. With the help of the City of At- lanta and various local, state and federal agencies, we’ve done extensive planning to ensure the safety of our participants, spectators, volunteers and partners. In addition, COVID-19 screening procedures will be imple- mented this year.

While not all safety and security tactics can be shared, here is information about some of our security measures, as well as simple things everyone can do to help make the 2021 Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race a great event.

Substantial law enforcement presence will be visible at the start, finish and post-event area, as well as along the course.

There will be clearly defined restricted areas at the start and at the finish area in Piedmont Park. Additional fencing with designated entry and exit points will be in place around the post-event area. Anyone entering a restricted area with a backpack, bag, purse, etc. will be subject to search.

See something, say something. Be vigilant. If you see something suspi- cious, contact the nearest police officer or call 911.

Event Alert System Event Alert System colored flags will be located at the start line, along the course at the water hydration stations and in the finish area. The flags will communicate the specific alert level, which could range from low (green) to moderate (yellow) to high (red) to cancelled (black) and are based pri- marily on weather conditions.

New Official Charity Partners Program

Atlanta Track Club, through its Official Charity Partner Program, is proud to combine a passion for running/walking with important community phil- anthropic initiatives. The program affords eligible 501c3 non-profit orga- nizations in Georgia the ability to raise awareness and funds in support of their charitable cause(s). Organizations must have a local chapter in Georgia, if a national or global organization and support work in the area of animal welfare, environment, healthcare/medicine/research, health/fit- ness/wellness, homelessness or social justice/equity/access.

In 2021, nine non-profit organizations that serve Atlantans have been se- lected as the first-ever Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race Charity Partners. The non-profits have received a combined total of 205 guaranteed entries into the 52nd Running of the Peachtree. Participants are required to raise a minimum of $1,000 for the non-profit in exchange for their registration.

Kilometer Kids Each year, Atlanta Track Club has a limited number of Atlanta Journal-Constitu- tion Peachtree Road Race entries available to benefit its Kilometer Kids program. Kilometer Kids charity entry runners receive:

• A Finisher’s T-shirt • Kilometer Kids short-sleeve performance T-shirt • Commemorative medal • MARTA pass • Guaranteed entry into start wave E • Training plan (based on training level)

These special entries are $200 each, $140 of which is tax deductible and goes directly to the Kilometer Kids program.

Kilometer Kids is Atlanta Track Club’s oldest and largest youth running program. The free, game-based curriculum is designed to teach kids 5-14 about goal set- ting, healthy habits, respect and community building, all through exposing them to the sport of running. Over the course of the season, the goal for every Kilometer Kid is to run 26.2 miles. or the equivalent of a marathon, by attending two practic- es a week for 11 weeks. There is no fee to participate, and the program is for all elementary and middle school students regardless of running ability or experience. In the noncompetitive program, being a Kilometer Kid is not about running the fast- est or winning the race. Instead it’s all about working hard, being kind and having fun while becoming more physically active, being a part of a team and finding joy in the process.

The program launched in 2007 with one location serving 38 kids. Since then, Kilometer Kids now impacts almost 5,000 kids each year in the Atlanta region and beyond. The program is funded by Atlanta Track Club, private donations, founda- tion grants, community partners, and Kilometer Kids charity entries from the AJC Peachtree Road Race

What makes Kilometer Kids different from many other sports-based youth devel- opment programs is that Atlanta Track Club does not train outside volunteers and send them out to schools and communities. Instead, in order to host a Kilometer Kids program, someone from that school or community serves as the coach. Ev- ery program site is unique with different needs, and a member of that community is best equipped to understand those needs. Atlanta Track Club believes this mod- el fosters a greater sense of camaraderie and trust. A site lead/head coach has the flexibility to decide whether they will participate for the fall and/or spring season, where their team will practice, and what days and times work best. Kilometer Kids site leads/head coaches are supported through a detailed curriculum of lesson plans, coaching orientation, mileage tracking tools and more.

ATLANTA TRACK CLUB HISTORY

Atlanta Track Club is a nonprofit founded in the fall of 1964 as a merger between two local running organizations, the Metropolitan Track Coaches Association and the Atlanta Striders. The early years of Atlanta Track Club were focused on track, with its main mission to honor outstanding high school and cross country athletes. In 1965, Atlanta Track Club’s first full year in existence, membership included 21 general members, 17 coaches and 40 student athletes. That year, the organization operated on a budget of just under $2,600, a portion of which was used to put on the Georgia Championship open track meet, sponsor junior and senior teams at five meets and organize an open high school meet.

The Club finished out the 1960s as a healthy but small organization devot- ed to promoting track and field, with secondary interest in . In the 1970s, that would reverse. On July 4, 1969, several Atlanta Track Club members attended a road race in , GA. On the ride home, one of them suggested putting on a July 4 race in Atlanta. A year later, about 150 people directed by Tim Singleton lined up near the Sears store on Peachtree to run what we now know as the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race. Its popularity grew rapid- ly, and it is now traditionally a 60,000-person event celebrating people of all athletic abilities as the world’s largest 10K running event.

In 1982, Atlanta Track Club found itself financially able to fund modest gifts to the city for the first time. The Club had lights installed at Grady Track, making it the first track in the city that could be used at night.

Fast forward 57 years after its founding and Atlanta Track Club has become the second-largest running organization in the nation, with an operating budget of $10 million, more than 34,000 members and 18,000 volunteers in 2019. In an average year, the Club organizes more than 40 events and programs, including the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race. In 2017, it led the charge to resurface the track Cheney Stadium in Atlanta’s Summerhill neighborhood. The one-time warmup facility for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics had fallen into disrepair. It is now a state-of-the-art track open to the public 24 hours a day.

40 MEDIA GUIDE 40 MEDIA GUIDE ATLANTA TRACK CLUB

On February 29, 2020, the Club hosted the USA Olympic Team Trials – Marathon, arguably the most successful Trials in the event’s history. Although the shutdowns of COVID-19 temporarily slowed operations – as it did around the world – the Club continued to offer virtual events and gatherings, virtual programming in its Kilometer Kids program, and even launched several new projects.

With a mission to create an active and healthy Atlanta through running and walking, Atlanta Track Club continues to play a critical role in inspiring and engaging the community to enjoy a healthier lifestyle. From the staff to the more than 8,000 children who participate in Atlanta Track Club’s Kilometer Kids youth running program each year to the more than 140,000 people who took part in the Club’s events in 2019, Atlanta Track Club looks for- ward to a robust future as we return to normalcy – and improve upon it.
