3 MEDIA GUIDE Welcome Letter from

On behalf of Atlanta Track Club, welcome to the 50th Running of the AJC Peachtree Road Race. It is a milestone we have long been awaiting, and for which we have long been planning.

In addition to being the largest 10K in the world and the biggest road race in the country, the Peachtree is also one of the oldest world-class 10Ks in the U.S. Born in 1970, the race not only pre-dates the first running boom, but helped spur it.

This year, participants will again come from across the nation (49 states) and the world (31 nations), but – at its heart – the Peachtree maintains its strong and devoted local following as an Atlanta Independence Day tradition.

We are proud to host runners, walkers and wheelchair racers of all abilities, from the top athletes in the world to participants who can’t wait to cross the Peachtree off their bucket list. This year, the race offers something extra to everyone: those world-class athletes will be chasing a $50,000 event- record bonus, and everyone in the field will forever be able to say “I ran the 50th.”

On behalf of Atlanta Track Club, our race committee, our 3,500 volunteers and the city, state and federal agencies that work tirelessly each year on the AJC Peachtree Road Race, here’s to a special year – one that we began commemorating just weeks after last year’s race with 50 stories for 50 weeks, on Peachtree50.com. Check out the website as well as Peachtree Magazine, and please let us know how we can further assist you in your coverage.

Have a historic day!

13 MEDIA GUIDE What Will Appear on This Year’s Shirt? By Jay Holder Tens of thousands of votes were cast and sometime before 7:30 a.m. on July 4, the winning design in the AJC Peachtree Road Race contest will be revealed to the world.

In a special contest to commemorate the milestone year for the Peachtree, the finalist for the 50th Running of the AJC Peachtree Road Race consist of prominent Atlantans or Atlanta institutions. All were asked to commision a design that captures their connection to the Peachtree. A $5,000 donation will be made by Atlanta Track Club and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution to a non-profit chosen by the winning designer or curator.

Voting was open to the public throughout the month of March at ajc.com/peachtree. The design and the color of the Mizuno T-shirt it is printed on is unveiled when the first finisher completes the race.

Here are the designs:

Designer/Curator: Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms Name of Design: One Atlanta Non-profit of Choice: Families First “The rich history of the AJC Peachtree Road Race extends far beyond the start and finish lines,” said Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms who runs the Peachtree every year. “It is my hope that our t-shirt design will celebrate the diversity of all Atlantans and mirror our goal of creating an inclusive and welcoming One Atlanta.”

Designer/Curator: Atlanta Braves Name of the Design: 50 and Still Feelin’ Peachy Non-profit of Choice: Atlanta Braves Youth Baseball “It’s a huge honor if this is the design that’s cho- sen,” said Insung Kim, Creative Director for the Atlanta Braves. “50 years is a long time and I think it’s a great, significant marker for any event or any organization. The Braves are happy to be a part of it especially since you’ve got an Atlanta icon with the AJC Peachtree Road Race and the Braves as another Atlanta icon.” The Braves are at home at SunTrust Park on the evening of July 4, facing the Philadelphia Phillies. They hope you’ll be in the stands wearing the shirt they designed.

14 MEDIA GUIDE MEDIA

Designer/Curator: Harry the Hawk Name of the Design: Celebrating Every Step Non-profit of Choice: Atlanta Hawks Foundation “Being born and raised in the city of Atlanta, and being a huge fan of the Atlanta Track Club ever since I was a baby bird, it would be a huge honor for my design to be chosen to represent our city, my organization, and Atlanta Track Club,” said Harry the Hawk in a written statement (because he doesn’t talk). “The AJC Peachtree Road Race is such a great ‘True to Atlanta’ tradition, and I am excited about taking part in this summer’s race. Everyone knows I can dance and I can dunk, and now, they’ll know that I can draw. This design is inspired by the very first Peachtree Road Race and celebrates the proud, final step of crossing the finish line.”

Designer/Curator: Jeff Galloway Name of the Design: These Runners Made Peachtree The World’s Foremost 10K Non-profit of Choice: Piedmont Park Conservancy and Back on My Feet The first winner of the Peachtree is also credited with putting the race on the national and international stage by inviting and encouraging his elite running friends to come compete in Atlanta. He pays homage to that element of the race with this design. Galloway worked with longtime local illustrator Walter Cumming to bring his vision to life. “I know that I won’t win ‘The Peachtree’ again,” said Gal- loway. “But it would be a highlight of my life to see 60,000 runners wearing the shirt design that portrays how the AJC Peachtree Road Race has inspired Atlanta and the world.”

Designer/Curator: Emily Giffin Name of the Design: Lucky Bib Non-profit of Choice: City of Refuge

Emily worked with her three children (Edward 15, George 15, and Harriet 11) - all runners – to come up with the concept for this design. “Like all families, mine enjoys many special traditions on the holidays,” said Giffin. “But our favorite, by far, is running the AJC Peachtree Road Race on the Fourth of July in Atlanta, the best running community in the world!” As an author by trade, she brought in a past champion to bring the design to life. Tina Tait, an Atlanta-based graphic designer who won the AJC Peachtree Road Race T-shirt contest in 2015, did the artwork on this entry. Just like the Peachtree, Tina is also turning 50 this year.

30 MEDIA GUIDE COURSE INFORMATION

Safety and Security

Safety is Atlanta Track Club’s top priority, and every year we work closely with the Mayor’s office, the city’s police and fire departments, emergency medical service units and other agencies to ensure a safe day for everyone.

While not all safety and security tactics can be shared, here is information about some of our security measures, as well as simple things that participants, volun- teers and spectators can do to help make the historic 50th Running of the AJC Peachtree Road Race a great event.

Substantial law enforcement presence will exist at the start, finish and post-event area, as well as along the course.

There will be clearly defined restricted areas at the start and at the finish area in Piedmont Park. Additional fencing with designated entry and exit points will be in place around the post-event area. Anyone entering a restricted area with a backpack, bag, purse, etc. will be subject to search, and runners, volunteers and spectators will NOT be allowed to bring ANY bags to the start line. Credentialed media will be given special tags for any bags needed on race day. Tags will be distributed with credentials.

See something, say something. Be vigilant. Anyone seeing anything suspicious is encouraged to contact the nearest police officer or call 911.

Event Alert System Event Alert System colored flags will be located at the start line, along the course at the fluid stations and in the finish area. The flags will communicate the specific alert level, which could range from low (green) to moderate (yellow) to high (red) to canceled (black) and are based primarily on weather conditions.

Kilometer Kids

Charity number options were available to participants of the 2019 AJC Peachtree Road Race through Atlanta Track Club’s Kilometer Kids. The charity entries were $200, $115 of which were tax deductible.

The Kilometer Kids youth running program launched in 2007 and has a mission to inspire youth to achieve health and fitness through a fun and supportive running program, empowering children with the knowledge they need to make smart lifestyle choices. Kilometer Kids impacts more than 9,000 children each year in the Atlanta region and beyond. The program is funded by Atlanta Track Club, private donations and partners including Mizuno, PNC Bank, Amerigroup, Anthem, Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation, Clif Kid, Atlanta United FC, 680 The Fan and Harts- field-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Kilometer Kids is a flexible, incentive-based running program designed to get kids in the community active. The 11-week Kilometer Kids program is open to any child between the ages of 7 and 14, and is designed for use by schools and groups as well as parents and families. A few of the program features include: · Free access to curriculum, including running game ideas and mileage tracking tools. · Incentive items to all participants who reach their mileage goals. · Flexibility: Parents, teachers and site coordinators can begin the program at any time. · Opportunity to participate in free, midweek fun runs and other youth running events organized by Atlanta Track Club.

Kilometer Kids seeks to create lifelong runners, instilling in participants the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle. Through the program, kids learn that exercise is a fun and rewarding activity, opening the door for physical activity to become a lifelong habit. Last year, Atlanta Track Club invested over $315,000 in the program.

34 MEDIA GUIDE ATLANTA TRACK CLUB

ATLANTA TRACK CLUB HISTORY

Atlanta Track Club is a nonprofit that was founded in the fall of 1964 as a merger between two local running organizations, the Metropolitan Track Coaches Association and the Atlanta Striders. The early years of Atlanta Track Club were focused on track, with its main mission to honor outstanding high school and cross country athletes. In 1965, Atlanta Track Club’s first full year in existence, membership included 21 general members, 17 coaches and 40 student athletes. That first year, the organization operated on a budget of just under $2,600, a portion of which was used to put on the Georgia Championship open track meet, sponsor junior and senior teams at five meets and organize an open high school meet.

The Club finished out the 1960s as a healthy but small organization devoted to promoting track and field, with secondary interest in . In the 1970s that would reverse. On July 4, 1969, several Atlanta Track Club members attended a road race in Fort Benning, GA. On the ride home, one of the runners suggested putting on a July 4th race in Atlanta. A year later, close to 150 people directed by Tim Singleton lined up near the Sears store on Peachtree to run what we now know as the AJC Peachtree Road Race. The popularity of the race grew rapidly, and it is now a 60,000-person event celebrating people of all athletic abilities as the world’s largest 10K running event.

In 1982, Atlanta Track Club found itself financially able to fund modest gifts to the city for the first time. The Club had lights installed at Grady Track, making it the first track in the city that could be used at night.

Fast forward 54 years and Atlanta Track Club has become the second largest running organization in the nation, with an operating budget of $8 million, more than 34,000 members and 18,000 volunteers. The Club organizes more than 40 events and programs throughout the year, including the AJC Peachtree Road Race. In 2017, it lead the charge to resurface the track Cheney Stadium in Atlanta’s Summerhill neighborhood. The one-time warmup facility for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics had fallen into disrepair. It is now a state-of-the-art track open to the public 24 hours a day.

With a mission to create an active and healthy Atlanta through running and walking, Atlanta Track Club has played a critical role in inspiring and engaging the community to enjoy a healthier lifestyle. From the more than 8,000 children who participate in Atlanta Track Club’s Kilometer Kids youth running program each year to the more than 130,000 people who are expected to take part in the Club’s events in 2018, Atlanta Track Club continues to keep runners and walkers moving forward. 35 MEDIA GUIDE ATLANTA TRACK CLUB
