Fiqh of Worship: Allowable Sujood + Prayer for rain Tuesday, February 19, 2013

In the last class we completed the discussion of the Voluntary prayers ( ) and we discussed six types of :

1. 2. 3.

4. 5. 6.

Today we will Insha’Allah start the topic of recommended sujood which are not associated with any prayers whether obligatory or .

Recommended Sujood: There are two types of recommended sujood:

Sajdah while reciting the : It is a Sunnah ( ) and comes usually at places in the Quran where something related to sujood is mentioned. There are 14 places in Quran where such sujood are recommended and were performed by Prophet SAW. As it is a Sunnah , it is recommended to do the sajdah at those prescribed places in Quran but if someone does not do it then there is no sin.

Ruling and Timing: While reciting the Quran ( ) whenever there is a place where a Sajdah is recommended then it is advisable to do that Sajdah and the rulings are:

Fiqh February 19th Page 1

• irrespective of the timing – even if otherwise it is makrooh timi ng for prayer and no prayer can be performed during that time example af ter the Asr Obligatory prayer or after the till after the sun dawn. As it is not associated with any prayer so it can be performed anytime and is associated with the recitation of the Quran.

• Whether within the Salaat or outside the Salaat – whether the sajdah comes within the Salaat or outside it ( ), it is performed accordingly. For example if one is reciting Surah Alaq and in its last Ayah there is a sajdah so whether the recitation is within a Salaat or with out a Salaat, it can be performed immediately after the Ay ah. Sometimes if someone is me morizing Quran and that particular Ayah where sajdah is recommended comes then doing only one sajdah is enough even if he is repeating the ayah for memorization. There is so much ease in fo llowing the Deen and the Sunnah so we should not make it difficult on ourselves.

When we read the Ayahs where sujood i s recommended then you really feel like making the sajdah because of the nature of the matter discussed there 1.

Method of doing the :

While praying if we come to an Ayah where sajdah is recommended then after reading the Ayah we say Allahu Akbar and go down to prostrate once. Any dua can be recited during the

which we normally recite during the sujood for Salaat: like or

. There are two duaas recommended and mentioned specially for the in the book:

I have prostrated my face to the One Who created it, and gave it hearing and sight by His Might and His Power. Glory is to Allah, the Best of creators.

1 Like in Surah Alaq …………….. (But prostrate and draw near [to Allah].

Fiqh February 19th Page 2

O Allah, write it as a reward for me, and release me from a burden for it, and make it a treasure for me in Paradise. Accept it from me as You accepted it from Your servant Dawood. After doing the get up saying Allahu Akbar and then stand again to the position before the sajd ah and continue with the prayer normally.

Outside of prayer: When doing the while outside of Salaat, we say then go down in prostration once, and then there is no Salam or saying takbeer again.

While listening to recitation : these above were the two cases where o ne is reciting the Quran himself; there are occasions when you are not reciting but only listening to the recitation , in this case also it is Sunnah to do the

( ).

When we do prostration then shaitân cries because he was commanded to prostrate by Allah SWT and he didn’t do it, and now he has Hellfire.

Prostration of Thankfulness: A few points to consider: 1. It is only sujood-e-shukr and not Salaat-e-shukr; Prophet Muhammad SAW did only sujood and did not pray a Salaat for shukr; Salaat-shukr is biddah; don’t invent anything in religion; 2. It is for special occasions and not every now and then we should do it. Look at the mercy of Allah SWT and how we should be grateful that even if we do prostration continuously it will not be enough but Allah SWT appreciates if we do only one sajdah-e-shukr, following the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad SAW.

Condition for performing : Whenever Allah SWT bestows us with some new blessing ( ) or protects us from some evil

( ) the n we are recommended ( ) to

Fiqh February 19th Page 3 do prostration of grat efulness to Allah SWT. It can be performed without a prayer garment or wudhu and outside a prayer ( ), some say even direction is not needed but we need to be careful in this matter . It is done outside the prayer and after saying only one sajdah is done like .

This was the discussion of the recommended sujood; we next discuss the prayers under special circumstances.

1. Prayer for Beneficial Rain:

Definition of : seeking the rain ( ) when there is a drought. It is a Sunnah and associated with some situation. There are a few conditions for this prayer: • when there is no rain for some time and there is a drought; • the concept of this pra yer is that a Muslim always need to show their need to Allah SWT and feel poor and humble in front of Allah SWT and then pray this Salaat; • it is performed in congregation ; • it is performed in an empty land in a similar manner as the two Eid Prayer (of course Eid prayer shows celeb ration whereas the rain for Salaat shows difficult situation); • should remove all the adornment (like in Eid) – even the man, very simple clothing in order to show your poverty and need fort Allah ’s help like in Yaum-e-Arafat; • we should not feel self-sufficient that we have water (or we can buy it from the market – should feel poor all the time in front of Allah SWT) – don’t rely on these means; • if there is delay in raining or there is no rain then it is a trail/calamity from Allah SWT so that people return to Allah SWT if they have forgotten to call their Rabb and so that they remember that everything is owned by Allah SWT; like in Surah Mulk Ayah 30 2 if Allah SWT wills then he can

2 Say, "Have you considered: if your water was to become sunken [into the earth], then who could bring you flowing water?"

Fiqh February 19th Page 4

make it easy for us to have water but Allah SWT is able to change th e circumstances or the characteristics of water. • When people indulge in wrong -doing specifically when they stop giving then as a punishment Allah SWT stops the rain; • it calls for doing more istaghfar and repent to Allah SWT

Method of performing :

is performed in a similar manner as the Eid prayer, is said 7 times in the first rikah, and 5 times in the second . The difference is there are two during the Eid prayer, but there is only one khutbah (sermon) for the . There should be more istaghfar, repentance and dua in the khutbah. It needs t o be different from the other khutbah because there is a dire need for something and we are begging Allah SWT – the Most Rich. Capable of p roviding and Able to withhold so the main thing in is the dua.

The dua can be in three different forms:

o - the Normal case: there is a congregation prayer for the Rain Prayer the supplication is said during the khutbah;

o there is no specific but the dua is made within the Friday Prayer during the normal Friday sermon ; and

o - Dua can be made individually but just the dua and not the prayer or a khutbah and should not be a specific dua like Dua-e-Istikhara. Dua for the rain and the important thing is the dua , just begging and supplicating Allah SWT for His mercy.

Its Ruling: The evidence is from the Hadit h reported by Abdullah Bin Zayd.

Insha’Allah it will be continued next week .

We ask Allah for His forgiveness and Mercy. Anything that is good from these notes is from Allah . Any mistakes & misrepresentations are my own. I ask Allah for His acceptance of all our good deeds and forgiveness of our sins Ameen.
