Foreword

Respected readers,

What are supplications? Supplications are requests a person submits to his Sustainer and Provider. Whenever a person afflicted by trouble, he cries out: “Ya Allah, Ya Raheem! (O Allah! O Compassionate One!)

Allah has ordained that His slaves should call Him and promised that He will answer their requests.

Supplication in itself is a great act of worship. According to a narration:

The Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) cemented his deep bond with Allah (SWT) to the extent that he would beseech Allah at every step of life. A look at the blessed life of the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) reveals that he would pray to Allah on every occasion of his life. We see that he used to pray to Allah seeking refuge with Him, thanking Him for His blessings or exhorting his Companions to develop a strong bond with Allah through supplications.

Look at the importance of supplication! We believe in Divine decree i.e., what will be, shall be and we understand that it is unalterable. However, we also know for sure that the only thing that can alter even Divine decree is supplication.

Let’s look at a narration of the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) recorded by At- Tirmithi:

It may be decreed for a person that he will suffer a loss but due to reciting the relevant supplication while exiting his home, he is saved from that loss or accident which had been decreed for him otherwise. The point to be noted here is that if it is written in the Book of Decree that such and such person is to face anything untoward, it is also recorded therein that if he seeks Allah’s refuge then this accident will not happen. Thus, due to the prayer and supplication, that evil is driven away from him.

We should remember Allah’s words

At present, the market is flooded with books on supplications and various anthologies of supplications from which I have benefited immensely. The book ‘Hisn-ul- Muslim’ by our respected friend Dr. Saeed Al-Qahtani has been of special benefit. I have tried to record only those supplications that are very common in our everyday life. I have experienced the efficacy of these supplications in my life and personally witnessed the remarkable power of these supplications when I started reciting them regularly.

I have also recorded all the relevant and authentic narrations regarding the supplications duly reported from the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him). I have tried to explain the supplications in a lucid manner so that everyone may understand them and benefit by them. I am indebted to Qari Iqbal Abdul Aziz, a senior colleague of ours at Darussalam, who extended valuable advice and suggestions in accomplishing this task. The important thing about supplications is that these must be addressed to Allah alone. He alone is the center of our hopes. He alone listens to our entreaties and averts mishaps from us. If we look at the blessed life of the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him), we come to know that he would always address Allah and invoke Him by offering prayers and supplicating before Him for help and support.

Dear readers,

According to the explanation of this verse by Muslim scholars and exegetes, Allah (SWT) says:

“When a person invokes Me, I not only listen to him but also accept his prayer.” This means that the common belief harboured by people who say that Allah never listens to sinners like ourselves, and that we must therefore invoke someone who is close to Allah to supplicate on our behalf, is a grave misconception. This verse clarifies that Allah not only listens to and accepts the prayers and supplications of His close allies and loved ones, but also those of ordinary people like us who are probe to committing sins and making mistakes. Hence, we should all address our needs to Allah directly.

Respected readers,

I have tried my best to ensure that all the supplications recorded here are of ‘Sahih’ (authentic) or ‘Hasan’ (good) grade.

I look forward to your prayers and suggestions,

Abdul Malik Mujahid Riyadh (Saudi Arabia)

Supplication on Waking Up

There are numerous supplications that may be recited on waking up from sleep. However, the most popular and easy one is the following, which we should recite when we get up from sleep:

Alhamdu lillaahil-lathee‘ ahyaanaa ba‘da maa ‘amaatanaa wa ilayhin-nushoor

Praise is to Allah Who gives us life after He has caused us to die and to Him is the return. (Al Bukhari 6312)

Explanation:

This supplication teaches a Muslim that he must begin his day by declaring Allah’s glorification and praise.

Supplication while Entering Lavatory

Bismillaahi Allaahumma ‘innee ‘a`oothu bika mi- nal-khubthi wal khabaa’ith (Before entering)

In the Name of Allah (Then) O Allah, I seek protection in You from the male and female unclean spirits. (Al Bukhari : 142)

Explanation:

Here, the words ‘khabeeth’ and ‘khabaaith’ refer to the male and female evil Jinns and devils who normally stay in unclean places like the lavatory and bathrooms. If we recite this supplication before entering the lavatory, we may save ourselves against the evil feared from these creatures. As a token of respect, it is recommended that this supplication must be recited before entering the bathroom because Allah’s name should not be recited in unclean places like the bathroom. The same has been reported from Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him). (Al-Adab-al-Mufrad: 352/2)

Supplication while exiting the lavatory

Ghufraanaka

I seek Your forgiveness

Supplication before Performing Ablution

Bismillaah

In the Name of Allah

Explanation:

The Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The ablution of a person has no worth if it is not begun with Bismillah i.e., reciting Allah’s name.”

The issue of saying Bismillah prior to ablution has been stressed greatly on the authority of numerous narrations as a preferable act. However, if a person forgets it, his ablution would still be valid.

Supplications after completing ablution

Ash-hadu ‘an laa ‘ilaaha ‘illallaahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu wa ‘ash-hadu ‘anna Muhammadan `abduhu wa Rasooluh.

I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, Who has no partner; and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger.

Explanation:

The rationale of saying these words is that after having attained outward cleanliness, a believer is reminded of the fundamental belief in the Oneness of Allah and the finality of the Prophethood of Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him). Thus, it cleanses him from within as well.

Allaahummaj`alneeminat-tawwaabeena waj`alnee minal-mutatahhireen.

O Allah, make me among those who turn to You in repentance, and make me among those who are purified. (Al Tirmidhi 55)

Explanation: Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “All the eight doors of Paradise are opened for a person who performs ablution and declares Shahaadatayn (the two testimonies of faith) firm belief in Allah’s Oneness and the Prophethood of Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him). He may enter Paradise from whichever the door he likes.”

Supplication upon Entering Home

Allaahumma innee as’aluka khairal- mawliji wa khairal–makhraji. Bismillaahi walajnaa wa bismillaahi kharajnaa wa alallaahi Rabbinaa tawakkalnaa.

“O Allah! I ask You for good both when entering and when going out; in the Name of Allah we have entered, and in the Name of Allah we have gone out and in Allah or Lord do we trust.” (Abu Dawud 5096)

Explanation:

The one who recites this supplication entrusts all his affairs to Allah. He declares complete satisfaction at every decree of Allah about him. Remember, the one who entrusts all his affairs to Allah is never in loss. Do remember to say Islamic greetings to the inmates of the house after reciting this supplication.

Supplication upon Exiting Home

Bismillaahi, tawakkaltu `alallaahi, wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata ‘illaa billaah

In the Name of Allah, I have placed my trust in Allah, there is no might and no power except by Allah. (Abu Dawud 5095)

Explanation:

Bismillaahi

In the Name of Allah

Reciting Allah’s name, while leaving home is based on the belief in Allah’s help and seeking assistance and sustenance only from Him. This way, Allah sets all the affairs of His servant right.

laa hawla wa laa quwwata ‘illaa billaah

There is no might and no power except by Allah This supplication safeguards a believer from the evil of every Satan or Jinn. (Abu Dawud 5095)

Allaahumma ‘innee ‘a`oothu bika ‘an ‘adhilla, ‘aw ‘udhalla, ‘aw ‘azilla, ‘aw ‘uzalla, ‘aw ‘adhlima, ‘aw ‘udhlama, ‘aw ‘ajhala ‘aw yujhala `alayya

O Allah, I seek refuge in You lest I misguide others, or I am misguided by others, lest I cause others to err or I am caused to err, lest I abuse others or be abused, and lest I behave foolishly or meet with the foolishness of others. (Abu Dawud 5094)

Explanation:

A person has to deal with different people when he leaves home, who it is feared may act indecently and unjustly with him (or vice-versa). In religious matters, there is a strong risk of misleading someone [inadvertently] or being misled oneself. On the other hand, it is feared that he may wrong himself or may be wronged in everday issues. If it is a business transaction, it is feared that there may be some foul play or misuse of the tongue. This supplication epitomizes quite comprehensively how to seek Allah’s safety from all the possible problems that can be encountered in social interactions.

Supplication when Going to the mosque for Tahajjud and Fajr prayer

Allaahumma aj`al fee qalbee nooran, wa fee lisaanee nooran, wa fee sam`ee nooran, wa fee basaree nooran, wa min khalfee nooran, wa min ‘amaamee nooran, wa min fawqee nooran, wa min tahtee nooran, Allaahumma ‘a`tinee nooran.

O Allah, place light in my heart, and on my tongue light, and in my ears light, and in my sight light, and behind me light, and before me light and above me light, and below me light, O Allah, grant me light. (Muslim:763)

Explanation:

Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) used to recite this supplication while leaving home for Tahajjud and Fajr prayers.

Noor (“light”) illuminates everything. Here, it refers to the light of faith. In this supplication, the heart is mentioned first because if the heart is well, all is well. In other words, the whole body is well. However, if the heart is ailing, the entire body is afflicted as well.

The request to Allah from His servant to be blessed with light for the senses of hearing and sight means that Allah may help us in the appropriate use of these senses for the spread of and righteous deeds.

The Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) was, of course, blessed with countless blessings by Allah. The emphasis here is for the benefit of the Ummah.

A group of Muslim scholars believe that the believers who recite this supplication would certainly have illumination all around them on the Day of Judgment and this very Divine Light would lead them to Paradise.

Furthermore, another meaning of light is knowledge and guidance towards the right path.

Invocation for entering the mosque

Allaahumma aftah lee abwaaba rahmatika

O Allah, open before me the doors of Your mercy. (Muslim:713)

Explanation:

This supplication invokes Allah’s mercy upon entering the mosque and explains that everyone who comes to the mosque needs Allah’s nearness, reward and Paradise. So, supplicating for Allah’s compassion and mercy while entering a mosque is appropriate.

Supplication for leaving the mosque

Allaahumma ‘innee ‘as’aluka min fadhlika

O Allah, I ask for Your favor. (Muslim:713)

Explanation:

Naturally, a believer seeks livelihood when he comes out of a mosque hence the request here for enrichment of livelihood is quite appropriate. Responding to the call for prayer The believer should repeat the words of the caller for prayer. However, he should say:

in response to

Explanation:

means: ‘hasten towards prayer” and

means: ‘come towards a great success’

in the form of Paradise which will be rewarded to you after death. Saying

in response to these words of caller is a sort of declaration that doing any righteous deeds or abstaining from any evil deeds is by no means a personal virtue or quality. Rather it is the result of Allah’s blessing. If we go to the mosque and offer prayer, it is simply a manifestation of Allah’s Greatness and His Blessing on us.

Then he should say:

Wa ‘anaa ‘ash-hadu ‘an laa ‘ilaaha ‘illallaahu wah- dahu laa shareeka lahu wa ‘anna Muhammadan `abduhu wa Rasooluhu, radheetu billaahi Rabban, wa bi- Muhammadin Rasoolan wa bil’islaami deenan.

I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, Who has no partner, and that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger. I am pleased with Allah as my Lord, with Muhammad as my Messenger and with Islam as my . [To be recited in after the Mu’aththin’s Tashahhud or the testimony of faith] (Muslim:386)

Supplications after the Call for prayer

Send salutations and greetings upon Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) after repeating the words of the call for prayer.

Then say this supplication:

Allaahumma Rabba haathihid-da`watit-taammati wassalaatil-qaa’imati, ‘aati Muhammadanil-wasee- lata walfadheelata, wab`ath-hu maqaamam-mah- moodanil-lathee wa`adtahu

O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and established prayer. Grant Muhammad the intercession and favor, and raise him to the honored station You have promised him. (Al Bukhari 614)

Explanation:

means: call towards the Oneness of Allah.

The word

Means that this call is comprehensive and nothing can ever be added or subtracted to it and it will remain intact until the .

Refers to a lofty station in Paradise where none can reach except Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him).

Means the loftiest status of Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) from among all the creation of Allah. Whereas

Refers to a station a person would stand and he would be greatly praised.

Dua means a supplication to Allah that He may award the ‘loftiest station’ to Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) on the Day of Judgment.

The Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) is reported to have said that whosoever repeats the call for prayer and recites this supplication is entitled to his intercession and that he will intercede for him on the Day of Judgment. Thus, whosoever from among the recites this supplication with deep respect and reverence in his heart for the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him), will be blessed with the intercession of the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him).

Iqamah Like the call for prayer, the Iqamah (second call for prayer) may be recited once or two times. However, Bilal (May Allah be pleased with him) would call singly, therefore that is the better choice. One must supplicate in the period between the call for prayer (Athaan) and the second call to prayer (Iqaamah) as the supplication at this time is not rejected, on the authority of a narration of Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him). (Sunan Abu Daawood, Hadeeth No.521 and At-Tirmithi, Hadeeth: 212) The First Supplication of Prayer

The words recited for entering prayer are:

These are called Takbeerat al-Ihraam. This is because after this all actions like eating, drinking, speaking and looking sideways are forbidden for the believer after this.

Subhaanaka Allaahumma wa bihamdika, wa ta- baarakasmuka, wa ta`aalaa jadduka, wa laa ‘ilaaha ghayruka

Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise. Blessed is Your Name and Exalted is Your Majesty. There is none worthy of worship but You. (Abu Dawud 775)

Explanation:

Whenever we have to ask something from a figure of authority, we resort to praising him and then we submit our request. The same etiquette is to be followed here. Since Allah is the Greatest, there is a special etiquette for asking Him anything. One must praise Him in the manner that befits His Grandeur and Exalted status.

There are numerous other supplications that can be recited in the beginning of prayer as well.

Supplication during Ruku‘ (bowing in prayer)

Subhaana Rabbiyal-`Adheem

Glory to my Lord the Exalted (three times). (Abu Dawud 871)

Explanation:

Allah’s Compassion and Mercy turns towards a believer when he bows down before Him and declares His Supreme Grandeur. The supplication for bowing should be recited thrice at least, but one may exceed it without limit.

Supplications for rising from the Ruku‘

Sami`allaahu liman hamidah

Allah hears whoever praises Him. (Al Bukhari 795)

Rabbanaa wa lakal-hamd, hamdan katheeran tayyiban mubaarakan feeh

Our Lord, praise is Yours, abundant, good and blessed praise (Al Bukhari 799)

Both the (the one leading the prayer) and Muqtadee (the one who is following him) must recite:
