(Draka Series Book 5) before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised Drakas! (Draka Series Book 5): 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Drakas!By Erik PetersonKudos to S.M. Stirling and his team of authorial co-conspirators for putting together this quality anthology, consisting of twelve chronologically-ordered tales from the Drakaverse. Each story stands on its own merits, and you are provided with sufficient information along the way to fully appreciate each tale even if you have not previously read any of the other Draka books. If you like to see your Drakas getting their well-deserved comeuppance, I especially recommend ‘Custer Under The Baobab’, by William Sanders, and ‘Upon Their Backs, To Bite ‘em’ by John Barnes. If you are brave enough to dare the subtle literary knife expertly wielded to utterly devastating effect, you must read ‘The Tradesmen’, by David Drake. If you are one of Stirling’s dirigible groupies, there is a very good story in here based on an air-sea battle between the Tsar’s navy versus Imperial Japanese airships, by Roland J. Green: ‘Written In The Wind: A Story Of The Draka’.If you want some quality prose of the sort which passes for levity and jaunty iconoclasm (by Draka Standards at least), go straight to ‘The Big Lie’, by Jane Lindskold. And if you want to hear how everybody’s favorite old-time Yankee American Annapolis Navy man from Missouri would have cussed out the Drakas on behalf of all our posthumous selves - and in the process get his ticket punched for a guaranteed first class trip to Valhalla (taking an honor guard with him, of course) - I refer you to Commodore Anson MacDonald’s speech on the last page of ‘The Last Word’, by Harry Turtledove....and If you are already familiar with the Draka saga, you will appreciate the added depth and nuance offered up by these twelve imaginative and individualistic writers.Definitely worth your time to check this book out.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An Fine addition to the Draka UniverseBy George E. Williams JrA nice collection of short-some very short-stories set in the Draka book series. Most of the stories were well written though a couple were barely connected and suffered by requiring the reader to have read other books set in a universe outside the Draka universe to fully enjoy. But, overall a good collection.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Better hope grim is what you came for, because grim is what you're going to getBy John C. FayThis collection of short stories by various authors set in S.M. Stirling's dystopian Draka alternate history/SF universe is, unsurprisingly, not much more cheerful than the "mainline" novels themselves. The plausibility of the historical successes of the Draka don't bear up much better under closer scrutiny than they did in Stirling's novels, either - but nevermind that. The stories here cover a wide range of times, settings, and styles - and it should come as no surprise that their quality varies quite appreciably too. One (quite awfully unforgettable) standout is "The Tradesmen" by noted grimsmith (shut up, it's a word now) David Drake, which while ostensibly merely (ha - "merely") dealing with an area of the universe's Eurasian War that is horrifying even by the high standards set by the Draka, in fact revolves around a piece of humor so black it could qualify as Stygian, with the story culminating with the "punchline". The story "The Greatest Danger" by the less well-known Lee Allred is also excellent - though again in a very dark sort of way. Surprisingly disappointing, however, is "Upon Their Backs, To Bite 'Em" by John Barnes, a writer who I've encountered and been favorably impressed (albeit sometimes a little disquieted) by in other contexts. Have no high expectations for him here, however.Overall, while this anthology is (as indicated) of somewhat uneven quality - and having no new work from Stirling himself can hardly be called anything but a let-down - there is enough of quality and enough glimpses into previously unexplored corners or episodes of the Draka saga here to make this likely a worthwhile purchase for readers interested in seeing more of the dark world Stirling created. THINK ABOUT HISTORY.NOW MAKE IT WORSE . .The Domination of the Draka begins as a British possession in Africa, but soon becomes far more. Absorbing refugees after the American Revolution, and later the Civil War, the Draka become a people bred to rule with an iron fist. They permanently enslave the peoples of Africa, when they do not simply kill them. But this does not slake the Draka thirst for power. Sweeping across the world, the Draka empire engulfs nation after nation, shackling into servitude all who are not Draka. Europe, Asia, and finally all the Earth and its colonies throughout the Solar System fall before the might of the Draka. But empires are not faceless monoliths; they are made of individuals, complex humans with their own hopes and dreams. And so one might ask: Who are the Draka What sort of people does the Domination rule The Draka would have many different answers . .. and this is their story. At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management). " . an exciting, evocative [and] horrifying read." —Poul Anderson"A vivid alternate reality . truly a tour de force." —David Drake"A potent, unflinching look at a might-have-been world whose evil both contrasts with and reflects that in our own." —Publishers Weekly". superb action scenes, interesting characters, and a detailed if somewhat grisly world." —Chicago Sun-TimesS. M. Stirling is the author of the Draka trilogy. Set in a parallel universe, a nation founded on slavery and the United States battle for domination of the world. The trilogy was recently republished in one huge volume as The Domination. Stirling has also written Drakon, a novel of a Draka warrior hurled into our world, and edited a companion volume, Drakas! Among his collaborations are the popular General series with David Drake, the novel, The Children's Hour, with Jerry Pournelle, and the national bestseller, The City Who Fought, with Anne McCaffrey. He and his wife live in Santa Fe, NM. About the AuthorS. M. Stirling is the author of numerous science fiction and fantasy novels, including the popular Nantucket series that began with Island in the Sea of Time. [mM5uc.ebook] Drakas! • Part Iii. Nantucket and the World's People
PART III. NANTUCKET AND THE WORLD’S PEOPLE Foreword Nantucket’s English settler families were not the first inhabitants of the island, nor has there ever been a time when their progeny, the “descended Nantucketers,” were the only residents. Sarah P. Bunker, who serves as the leitmotif for these Nantucketers, lived in a house built hard by a Wampanoag burial site and inherited a basket made for her father by Abram Quary, Nantucket’s “last Indian.” When she was a girl, her father—a sea captain in the China trade—was in the habit of receiving crewmen and foreigners at home, and he employed live-in “help” to assist with the care and upkeep of what was grandly known as “the Pinkham estate.” Years later, in the straitened circumstances of her widowhood, Sarah P. supported the household by nursing injured, sick, and dying people of “all sorts” as Nantucket’s bone-setter Zaccheus Macy had done a century earlier.1 As she lived out the last decade of her life in her upstairs room, what reached her ears from downstairs day in, day out was the incomprehensible conversation of her grand- daughter-in-law’s relatives from Finland. Sarah P. knew full well that on Nantucket there were strangers to be found wherever one turned, not just in sailors boarding houses and the servants quarters of descended Nantucketers’ houses. Parts I and II have followed the history of the Wampanoags who were in possession of the island before the English came; the Africans who were brought here by the English; and many people who came from other islands in the employ of Nantucketers.

Marching Through Georgia by S.M. Stirling CHAPTER ONE "…finally in 1783. by the Peace of Paris. Great Britain made peace with the American revolutionists and their European allies. However, the revival of British naval strength in the last years of the war made Spain and France ready to offer a face-saving compromise, particularly when they could do so at the expense of the weakest partner in their coalition, the Netherlands. Franco-Spanish gains in the West Indies were to be balanced by allowing Britain to annex the Dutch Cape colony, which had been occupied in 1779 to prevent its use by the French—almost as an afterthought, in an operation nearly cancelled . Poor and remote, the Cape was renamed after Francis Drake and used as a dumping ground for Britain's other inheritance from the American wan the Loyalists, tens of thousands of whom had fought for the Crown and now faced exile as penniless refugees. As early as 1781 shiploads were arriving; after the Peace, whole regiments set sail with their families and slaves as the southern ports of Savannah and Charleston were evacuated. They were joined by large numbers of Hessian and other German mercenaries formerly in British service. Within a decade over 250.000 immigrants had arrived, swamping and assimilating the thin scattering ofDutch-Afilkaander settlers… 200 Years: A Social History of the Domination, by Alan E. Sorensson. This The Sea of Time, the audience gets to see the Big Apple in former times as well as today. Its visual effects may seem a little outdated - although this certainly adds to the charm - but it conveys its sweet little plot with a sense of grandeur. I'm shocked and disappointed that it clearly wasn't popular enough to sustain an audience, as it is now virtually impossible to find a cinema anywhere that is showing it. So sad. If IMAX want to save themselves, they need to commit to getting great filmmakers and allowing them to tell their stories on the big screen, as was clearly their policy when they created this.

Rev. created needs/desires that spurred overseas expansion - manufacturers wanted access to natural resources - hoped for new markets where they could sell their factory goods - colonies offered a valuable outlet for Europe's growing population 2. political and military interests - merchant ships, naval vessels needed bases around the world to take on coal and supplies - industrial powers seized islands, harbors - nationalism and prestige - Western leaders claimed colonies were needed for national security - ruling a global empire increased a nation's prestige 3. humanitarian goals - missionaries, doctors, colonial officials believed they had a duty to spread western civilization (medicine, law, Christianity) 4. Social Darwinism - many Westerners believed in their racial superiority - idea that Europeans were superior to all others - imperial conquest/destruction of weaker races was nature's way of improving the human species The Success of Western Imperialism - 1870-1914 - imperialist nations gained control over much of the world - reasons for their success: Weakness of Nonwestern States - older civilizations in decline (Ottoman Middle East, Mughal India, Qing China) - in West Africa, slave
