La llegada de la modernidad al Japón (Restauración Meiji 1866-1869 d.C.), el imperialismo y su implicación en la Segunda Guerra Mundial y posterior reconstrucción, obligaron a la sociedad japonesa a sufrir cambios forzosos en apenas siglo y medio. En lo que atañe a la expansión y difusión internacional de las artes marciales en las últimas décadas, basadas en ocasiones en fenómenos cinematográficos o en tópicos li- terarios y unidos a la citada dificultad de traducir términos, han generado notables confusiones. La importante línea que diferencia arte marcial, deporte de lucha y sistema de defensa personal, muchas veces obviada, solo ha hecho que liar más la madeja. En mi opinión, la mejor forma de arrojar algo de luz al tema es investigar y esclarecer las razones históricas que influencian un arte u otro y así comprender sus objetivos y metodología. El objetivo del presente texto es, por tanto, realizar una aproximación superficial de acuerdo a los ele- mentos históricos que tienen una clara influencia sobre la raíz de las prácticas marciales. El viaje, en esta ocasión, lo realizamos desde mi experiencia y conocimiento, y en clave generalista, ya que cada escuela posee su propio léxico y aproximación debidos a los condicionantes que la crearon y desarrollaron, que son únicos e igualmente valiosos. A pesar de que las artes de guerra en Japón se remontan a mucho tiempo atrás, las más antiguas escuelas acredita- das que llegan hasta nuestros días se remontan a finales del siglo XIV. No obstante, es en el periodo Sengoku Jidai 戦国時代 (1467-1568 d.C.), un periodo convulso de guerra civil, cuando las artes militares tienen su más importante auge, provocado por la necesidad de combatir en los cam- pos de batalla constantemente. En los frentes, la lanza (yari 槍) se consagra como arma principal, y los, hasta entonces, omnipresentes y simbólicos arcos (yumi 弓 ) son parcial- mente sustituidos a finales del siglo XVI por los cañones (teppô 鉄砲) y por los arcabuces (tanegashima 種子島), que- dando la alabarda japonesa (naginata 薙刀) en desuso y siendo anecdótico y minoritario el empleo de la espada de guerra (tachi 太刀). Many of our members have already been introduced to this weapon. The naginata is rarely seen in most martial arts schools, although it was relatively common on the Japanese battlefields during the reign of the samurai. Certifications (menkyo) in naginata are typically given in Koryu dojo, although there are modern Gendai dojo that offer dan ranks in naginata-jutsu. Rich Mendolia prepares to attack Ryan Harden during naginata training. My introduction to naginata (なぎなた, 薙刀) occurred a few decades ago at the JKI Hombu. When I trained at the JKI Hombu in this art, most wore a white or black uwagi (jacket) or keikogi hakama as naginata is a very traditional Japanese art. For those of you who have not trained in hakama, it is a clumsy piece of clothing particularly for men, as it is bloused, pleated pants that is very easy to trip over until one gets use to it.

The analysis is based on the idea of inscribing on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage, as Japan’s oldest martialkoryū cultural asset. Initial proposals to do so were put forward in the last ten years by some Japanese martial arts organizations, budōe.g. Nippon Budokan, especially by its legacy division. The paper interprets the ritual-like and pattern-like formalism of the Japanese modern and traditional legacy, especially in the context ofbud “Japaneseō nationalist history” after the Meiji Restoration. Emphasis is therefore put on the structures of movements that pre-exist in the ritual practices of the classical culture and are still present in modern martial arts systems, because of their hereditary and pre-formalized performativity. What you won’t find is much in the way of accurate information on the authentic fighting traditions of the Japanese samurai. Sword & Spirit, the second volume in the Classical Warrior Traditions of Japan series, fills that gap. The eight essays in this volume include a translation of advice from a warrior to his son; the teachings of a modern instructor of the classical traditions; evaluations of the classical martial arts as combat systems; an outline of the meaning of kata in training; an interview with a master of shurikenjutsu; photos and descriptions of a select group of classical martial arts traditions; and an introduction to a long neglected primary source on the ways of the Japanese warrior. Editor Diane Skoss is well qualified to present this collection. She lived in Japan for more than ten years, researching and training in the classical martial arts. She holds an okuden (highest technical level) license in the classical tradition of Toda-ha Buko-ryu naginatajutsu and is the world’s highest ranked non-Japanese in the modern martial art of jukendo, or way of the bayonet.

The aim of the research material was to provide a factual description and explanation of the functioning of the organization of martial arts, according to the 15th century tradition of Japanese fencing. This is Shibu Kobudo that has been operating in Poland for 20 years. A theoretical perspective was used for analysis and reflection and included: the history of physical culture, the soci- ology of culture, the humanistic theory of martial arts and the haplology and anthropology of martial arts. Methods. Analysis of sources and the content of the existing studies and literature on the subject was applied in the manuscript. This includes, among other things content analysis of documents, photographs, popular magazines and direct participation in the events described in this paper. In addition, the authors used the participatory observation method – as they are both participants in and direct observers of the described events. Results. Improved and supplemented factual descriptions (in relation to the subject matter of literature) are presented. The activities of pioneers and leaders, activists, organizers and teachers are set out. This is a particular asset for the classic martial arts (kenjutsu, kobudo) that may attract enthusiasts for the next meeting for practical studies.

    From the Teacher’s Corner: A One-Trick Pony copyright © 2016 Douglas Tong, all rights reserved. “I don’t see how anyone can do more than one style.” Have you heard this before? This phrase is one that I have heard a few times in conversation but more often, I read it on the sword forums from time to time. And I have heard the corollary to this: “I don’t see how anyone can do more than one style… and be successful at both.” Now some people argue that this might only pertain to two styles within the same art form. For example, 2 styles of kenjutsu, 2 styles of jujutsu, 2 styles of iaido, etc… If it were two styles from completely different art forms, for these people, there is less of an argument. For example, being good at kenjutsu and judo, or iaido and jodo. This is an interesting conversation piece. Some people argue that the two will taint each other. Your kenjutsu will have a judo flavour or your iaido will have a jodo flavour. They argue that it will never be a pure form of whatever style of kenjutsu it is or that your iaido will never be a pure form of iaido. It will have been tainted by your immersion in the other art. These are the kind of people who argue that you must do only that art to be really good at it. Really? And then there are old Japanese aphorisms like “chasing two rabbits, you succeed in capturing neither.” Or the English one, “Jack of all trades, master of none.” The Japanese one refers to the thinking that if you study too many arts, you will be good at none of them.

    A Conversation with Daito-ryu’s Other Child by Ellis Amdur posted in Aikido Journal #101 (1994) Over the past six months, I have had the honor to be invited to teach both kenjutsu and aikido at the Pacific Rim Martial Arts Academy, a school which offers instruction in hapkido, tae kwon do, judo, and aikido. The school is headed by Quanjan Nim (3rd generation Grandmaster) James Garrison of the Ju Sool Kwan hapkido tradition. The headquarters of the Ju Sool Kwan is in Korea. It is asserted by practitioners of this art that the founder, Yong Sool Choi, studied Daito-ryu under Sokaku Takeda. Unfortunately, no records have been located to substantiate this assertion, and it may well be that none will ever be found. First of all, due to Japan’s former colonization of Korea, many historical records were lost or destroyed. Secondly, according to Mr. Garrison, the Korean people generally do not have as strong an affinity for maintaining tradition unchanged, or even maintaining records of traditions as do the Japanese martial schools. Korean martial arts have, instead, maintained themselves as syncretic entities, absorbing and adapting new influences in each generation, attempting to establish themselves as viable in their chosen environment Viability is determined by such factors as combat effectiveness, political influence, financial standing, social standing of the participants, and changes in fashion. All this makes the world of Korean martial arts one of constant ferment, showing some of the best and worst traits of martial arts practice. On the down side, inflated ranks, even rank for sale, are rife, and political maneuvering among the practitioners occurs at all levels.

    KLUB JAPONSKEGA MEČEVANJA MARIBOR Roška ulica 32, 2000 Maribor, Slovenija Kodeks za IAIDO, IAIJUTSU IN NAGINATAJUTSU sekcijo in obnašanje v prostorih, kjer se izvaja ~ 1 ~ Obrazložitev: V prostorih kjer se izvaja iaido, iaijutsu in naginatajutsu (v nadaljevanju dojo, ki je lahko odprti ali zaprt prostor) obstaja vrsta pravil, ki so izraz spoštovanja in vljudnosti do vseh tradicionalnih mečevalcev (v nadaljevanju iaidoke), učiteljev in gostov. Namenjena so vzpostavitvi in ohranjanju prijateljske atmosfere, kjer vladata tišina in mir, kjer se iaidoke lahko zberejo in vzdržujejo koncentracijo potrebno za vadbo. Spoštovanje drugih šol/društev/organizacij je del iaida, iaijutsa in naginatajutsa. Čeprav se mogoče sprva zdijo nekateri načini obnašanja v doju, ki izvira iz japonske tradicije, nerazumljivi in pretirani, so namenjeni, da ustvarijo svoboden prostor, ki ga iaidoka potrebuje, da lahko nemoteno vadi in se koncentrira na vadbo. Sledijo bistvene točke etikete v doju: Pri vstopu in zapuščanju doja se iaidoka pri vhodu prikloni kamizi (svetišču) oz. vsem navzočim. V dojo ne vstopamo z obutvijo, s katero hodimo zunaj. Smo zmeraj pravočasni za vadbo, to pomeni, da pridemo dovolj hitro, da se lahko oblečemo in pripravimo dojo. V primeru, zamude iaidoka počaka na znak vaditelja, da se pridruži vadbi. Pred vadbo se ogrejemo sami in/ali skupinsko. Pred reiho-m (pozdravom) snamemo vso opremo za mečevanje (katano, wakizashi, tanto, naginato, shuriken…). Vodja vadbe je s hrbtom obrnjen proti kamizi, levo in desno od sebe ima lahko pomočnike, goste, mojstre. Vzdolž doja se razporedijo ostale iaidoke v dveh vrstah, obrnjene drug proti drugemu, tako da je najstarejša iaidoka (tisti, ki najdalj časa trenirata veščino trenirane šole) vodji treninga shomen hidari (od spredaj levo), naslednji shomen migi (od spredaj desno), naslednji shomen migi za razdaljo 1 (ene) katane od prve iaidoke itd.
