Kalamazoo's squad will be built around co-captains Joel Menges, a sophomore, and senior Len Chase, and senior veteran Paul Burkett. Menges took first place at the 1976 MIAA conference meet, leading Kalamazoo to a third-place league finish. Chase is a three-year letterman, and Burkett, a 1976 letter winner, will be back in action after being sidelined by a knee injury in 1976. Sophomores Dave Hubbell, Doug Van Zoeren, and Mike Stier are expected to be worth watching, and Coach Ray Comeau hopes to see good performances from the six freshmen who have turned out for the squad. Seniors Bryan Lilly and Randy ·Ryan, both lettermen, are uncertain returnees who could contribute valuable experience if they are able to run.

PROFILE: COACH RAY COMEAU

An assistant professor of education, Coach Ray Comeau will be making his coaching debut this season. A 1963 graduate of Kalamazoo College, Comeau ran track and played football as a student. He assisted Coach Ed Baker with this spring's track team which ended the season breaking or tieing seven College records.

Thirteen veterans from the 1976 season will be back along with seven returnees from the 1975 squad to form the nucleus of a seasoned unit which Coach Tish Loveless believes should have little trouble in im proving last year's 3-8-1~ overall record. Lost to graduation were Nancy Winkley, a 1976 Great Lakes pick; Abi Chou, a 1976 Col leges second team choice; and Mary Schramke, an alternate to the Michi gan Colleges squad. Chou was sweeper and Schramke goalkeeper for the 1976 team and both these positions will have to be filled this season with unexperienced players. Two other gaps in the lineup will be the absence of Chris~y Bishop, who was selected for the 1976 Michigan Colleges first team and who tied the College record for goals scored in one season; and forward Kathy Plaiser. Both will be studying in Europe this fall.

PROFILE: COACH TISH LOVELESS

Kalamazoo College will field a football team that w~ll be bigger, faster, stronger, and more mature than the one that took the field a year ago. With an experienced letterman at every offensive and defen~ sive position along with excellent returning kickers, the well-balanced Hornets appear poised and ready. to make a determined run for the 1977 MIAA title. Coach Ed Baker and assistant coach Bob Kent are reluctant to single out individual players as potential stand-outs prior to the start of pre-season drills, but they expect that the 36 returning let termen and a strong group of seniors will provide the leadership neces sary to assure a winning season. These seniors include: ·running back Kevin Moody, quarterback Neil "Tollas, wide receivers Jim Clayton and Dave Galindo, defensive linemen Vic Zambardi, John Vertalka, and Gerard Weston; linebacker Kevin Merigian, and deep backs Dan Baker, Mark Price, and Bob Cross. A total of eight seniors were lost to graduation, but only three were in the starting lineup at the conclusion of the season. The Hornets ended their 1976 campaign 2-3, good for fourth in the con ference.

PROFILE: COACH ED BAKER

Assistant professor of physical education and head football and track coach, Ed Baker took charge of the Hornet football fortunes in l967. Rak~r interjected an exciting brand of football to Kalamazoo three. years ago when he introduced the pro-set, veer attack offense i~ response to changing personnel. He graduated from Denison University and holds a master's degree from Ohio State University where he coached varsity lacrosse while a physical education instructor. He came to Kalamazoo from the head coaching post at the Haverford School· in Philadelphia.

Last year's squad finished the season second in the conference with a 6-4 record and was 7-6 oyerall. This year's sched ule will consist of 15 games, 10 of which will be conference contests. Included are two matches against Wabash College and DePauw University, both well-established soccer schools. Other tough competition will be furnished by and Spring Arbor College, which was a finalist in last year's NAIA National championship round. Lost through graduation were all-conference selections Chris Pyne and Ralph Pearce, as well as Dave Preston, Darrell Rogers, and Rick Skandalaris, all of whom will be difficult to replace. Fortunately for Kalamazoo, Most Valuable Player and all-MIAA fullback Dave Curren has one more year of eligibility left and should make the other losses seem less consequential. Also back will be 1976 captain and goalie John McVey, Most Improved Player Steve Jackson, and All-League performers Peter Roukema and Eric Norbury. Incoming freshmen include All-American forward Bill Ralph from Livonia, Michigan, and an experienced midfield player from Bielefeld, Germany, Ralf Wachsmuth. The roste~ also contains a number of freshmen with considerable playing experience, primarily from the Detroit area as well as Ohio and Illinois.
