An apprenticeship is a combination of on-the-job training and related instruction, in which workers learn the practical and theoretical aspects of a highly skilled occupation. After the program is completed in typically 3-5 years, the apprentice is granted a certification. Most employers offer apprenticeship programs that are registered through the U.S. Department of Labor. The investment of the employer to the apprentice is very important because it results in skilled, trained professionals in an occupation. Most apprentices are mentored by a journeyman to guide them and expose them to the occupation they are interested in.
