February 2018 Monthly Catalogue Welcome to the February 2018 edition of the NHBS Monthly Catalogue, which lists all new titles added to our website in the last month. We start off by reannouncing Bloomsbury's Handbook of Western Palearctic Birds: Passerines. This title has been in preparation for at least a decade and has been in various states of limbo, but is now due for July. It has expanded to be a 2-volume set, with volume 1 and volume 2 available separately. Bloomsbury will furthermore publish Birds of Italy in May and RSPB Spotlight: Swifts and Swallows in June, and Pelagic Publishing will release Where to Watch Birds in Sardinia in July. We have received stock of the privately published Rare and Scarce Birds of Cheshire & Wirral and two hard-to-find Asian bird guides: A Photographic Guide to the Birds of Hong Kong from the Hong Kong Birdwatching Society and A Field Guide to the Birds of Taiwan from the Wild Bird Society Of Taipei. Lastly, two other interesting ornithology titles are Bloomsbury's The Wonderful Mr Willughby: The First True Ornithologist, authored by Tim Birkhead and due May, and Faber & Faber's Mrs Moreau's Warbler: How Birds Got Their Names, due May. For the other animal groups that we normally mention here we have several interesting titles each. On the subject of mammals Bloomsbury will publish When the Last Lion Roars: How the King of the Beasts Was Brought to the Brink and RSPB Spotlight: Hedgehogs in June and a paperback reprint of The Way of the Hare in July, while Harvard University Press has announced The New Chimpanzee: A Twenty-First-Century Portrait of Our Closest Kin for March. Herpetologists will be interested in The Lizards, Crocodiles, and Turtles of Honduras: Systematics, Distribution, and Conservation from Harvard University Press, due April, and King Cobra: Natural History and Captive Management from Natural History Publications Borneo, for which we will have stock soon. We furthermore have stock for two hard-to-find bilingual titles in English and Italian: Tadpoles of Italy and Cave Salamanders of Italy. Those with an interest in insects can look forward to two new guides from John Beaufoy, the second edition of A Naturalist's Guide to the Butterflies & Dragonflies of Sri Lanka, due May, and A Naturalist's Guide To Butterflies of Malaysia: Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore and Southern Thailand, due March. We also have stock of the Annotated Checklist of the Moths and Butterflies (Lepidoptera) of Canada and Alaska, published by Pensoft. For botanists, we have two titles worth mentioning, both from NatureBureau: Mosses, Liverworts & Hornworts of Ascension Island, which is in stock now, and Oxfordshire's Threatened Plants: A Register of Rare and Scarce Species, due June. Lastly, we have a range of titles of interest to both armchair naturalists and travellers. Picador will publish Wilding: The Return of Nature to an English Farm in May, Granta will publish the paperback of Patrick Barkham's Islander: A Journey Around Our Archipelago in May, and Harper Collins has announced a 50th anniversary edition of a classic of nature writing: Edward Abbey's Desert Solitaire: A Season in the Wilderness. Bradt will publish the seventh edition of Antarctica: A Guide to the Wildlife in March, and 52 European Wildlife Weekends: A Year of Short Breaks for Nature Lovers in April. Just before sending this catalogue, Whittles announced The Arctic, due April. To round up, a title of general interest is Bloomsbury's Seeds of Science: Why We Got It So Wrong On GMOs, due April, written, interestingly, by Mark Lymas who went from being a vociferous opponent to a staunch supporter. And we have a rather unusual art book in the form of Audubon's Last Wilderness Journey: The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, due March. As always, if you are looking for a particular title that we do not yet have in our range, or you would like to suggest a title for NHBS to stock, please do get in touch.
