Krause Doctor of Ministry School of Theology, Fuller Theological Seminary 2008 The aim of this paper is to develop a reproducible church planting process for the Adventist church within Australia. It will be shown that the Adventist church started as a church planting movement. Today, however, while churches are being planted rapidly in non-first world countries, there is little in the way of church planting in secular, first would countries. It is felt that, if a reproducible process for church planting could be developed in Australia, a secular society, it might help restore church planting to the foreground of evangelism and disciple making for the church. The Adventist church could once again become a church planting movement. Part One examines the ministry context of the paper. The Adventist’s beginnings as a church planting movement will be examined, along with how it lost its church planting emphasis. The current status of church planting in Australia, along with its current challenges will be canvassed. Part Two of the paper examines the theology that motivated the early Adventist church to mission. The church’s theology, particularly regarding the Sabbath, the Holistic nature of man, and eschatological beliefs, was the fuel for the church planting method. Part Three describes the healthy characteristics of church planting movements and the essential structural elements of the proposed church planting process. Part Four outlines the suggested reproducible process for church planting. It also describes how this process can be implemented. This paper concludes that it is possible to develop a church planting process that is reproducible for the Adventist context worldwide. It takes into account the message the Adventist church wants to share with the world and a method of sharing that message. Content Reader: Dr. Robert E. Many denominational leaders, as friends and colleagues, have inspired me as we together have endeavoured to see church planting again become an important part of Adventism. Loren Pratt, Glenn Townsend, Graeme Christian, Roger Govender, and Jerry Matthews are among the many who see the importance of church planting. To Steve Addison at CRM, who came alongside me when we first planted the Central Coast Community Church: Steve, you coached me and helped my denomination through the Matrix program that became part of the church planting process described in this paper.     2021 TRANS-FORMTrans Pacific Union Newsletter 01, Jan-Mar Be a Transformer! On Easter weekend, I was sharing devotions for the youth camp that was held at Navesau Adventist High School in Fiji. What I saw really inspired me. These young people were not there just to have a good time, however were there to transform Navesau. They planted thousands of root crops, vegetables, painted railings and cleaned up the place. At the end of the camp, they donated many things for the school – from equipment for the computer lab, cooking utensils, fencing wire and even family household items. I am sure that it amounted to worth thousands of dollars. I literally saw our Vision Statement come alive. I saw ‘A Vibrant Adventist youth movement, living their hope in Jesus and transforming Navesau’. I know that there were many youth camps around the TPUM who also did similar things and I praise the Lord for the commitment our people have made to transform our Pacific. We can work together to transform our communities, and we can also do it individually. Jesus Christ illustrates this with this Parable in Matthew 13:33: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast…mixed into…flour until it is worked all through the dough.” Jesus invites us to imagine the amazing properties of a little bit of yeast; it can make dough rise so that it bakes into wonderful bread. Like yeast, only a small expression of the kingdom of Jesus Christ in our lives can make an incredible impact on the lives and culture of people around us.

Campbell Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies Cavite, Philippines 1. Introduction “All Christians engage in confessional synthesis,” wrote theologian Carl R. Trueman.1 Some religious groups adhere to a public confession of faith as subject to public scrutiny whereas others are immune to such scrutiny. Early Seventh-day Adventists, with strong ties to the Christian Connexion, feared lest the creation of a statement of beliefs so that some at some point may disagree with that statement may at some point be excluded.2 Another danger was that statements of belief might be used to present making new discoveries from Scripture, or afterward a new truth might be stifled by appealing to the authority of an already established creed. From the perspective of early Sabbatarian Adventists, some remembered the time when during the Millerite revival that statements of belief were used to exclude them from church fellowship.3 These fears were aptly expressed during the earliest organizational developments in 1861 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.     The Origins of Millerite Separatism By Andrew Taylor (BA in History, Aurora University and MA in History, University of Rhode Island) CHAPTER 1 HISTORIANS AND MILLERITE SEPARATISM ===================================== Early in 1841, Truman Hendryx moved to Bradford, Pennsylvania, where he quickly grew alienated from his local church. Upon settling down in his new home, Hendryx attended several services in his new community’s Baptist church. After only a handful of visits, though, he became convinced that the church did not believe in what he referred to as “Bible religion.” Its “impiety” led him to lament, “I sometimes almost feel to use the language [of] the Prophecy ‘Lord, they have killed thy prophets and digged [sic] down thine [sic] altars and I only am left alone and they seek my life.”’1 His opposition to the church left him isolated in his community, but his fear of “degeneracy in the churches and ministers” was greater than his loneliness. Self-righteously believing that his beliefs were the “Bible truth,” he resolved to remain apart from the Baptist church rather than attend and be corrupted by its “sinful” influence.2 The “sinful” church from which Hendryx separated himself was characteristic of mainstream antebellum evangelicalism. The tumultuous first decades of the nineteenth century had transformed the theological and institutional foundations of mainstream American Protestantism. During the colonial era, American Protestantism had been dominated by the Congregational, Presbyterian, and Anglican churches, which, for the most part, had remained committed to the theology of John Calvin. In Calvinism, God was envisioned as all-powerful, having predetermined both the course of history and the eternal destiny of all humans.

The thesis analyzes the development of black/white race relations in the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and how it has led to the Church’s stance regarding race during the Civil Rights Movement. The functionalist theory is utilized to elucidate the Church’s racial approach from a sociological perspective. This thesis allows for future research of other religious organizations and how those institutions have helped advance or delay the quest for social freedom amongst African Americans.     BOOKREVIEWS 28 1 Promise of Rest: A Canonical Reading of Hebrews 3:7-4:13" (David E. Garland). Dockery affirms a sound typological interpretation. Citing texts from John 5:39- 40 and John 5:46, he demonstrates how Jesus understood the OT as referring to himself and saw himself as the antitype of individuals like David, Solomon, Elijah, and others (162-163). While parts 1 and 2 are primarily concerned with methodological issues, part 3 (225-315) concentrates on practical ways of applying the OT to modern culture and the church. In "Preaching the Present Tense: Coming Alive to the Old Testament," Al Fasol focuses on the important homiletical issues involved in preaching the OT. He recommends that the theme text of the sermon be summarized with a brief, interpretive, past-tense statement. This sentence should reflect the Eternal Truth of the Text (E.T.T.). This is to be followed by a present-tense sentence of application which communicates the Truth for Today (T.T.). While Klein offers this suggestion with the intent of making the text applicable, it seems to be a reflection of Stendahl's much-debated dichotomy between "what it meant" and "what it meansn-a dichotomy that has been challenged in some recent discussions. The chapters on "Changing the Church with the Words of God" (C. Richard Wells); "Changing Culture with Words from Godn (James Emery White); and "Where Do We Go from Here?: Integrating the Old Testament into Your Ministry" (Kenneth S. Hempell) represent a clear attempt to relate the OT to church and society.

  • Pedagogical Application of the Seventh-Day Adventist Philosophy of Education
    Journal of Research on Christian Education Summer 2001, Vol. 10, Special Edition pp. 309-325 Pedagogical Application of the Seventh-day Adventist Philosophy of Education James A. Tucker Andrews University The impetus for this paper is an article that appeared in the Sep- tember 1999 issue of The Atlantic Monthly. The title of that article, writ- ten by Todd Oppenheimer, is “Schooling the Imagination.” Oppenheimer describes a particular school system that educates not only the mind to think, but also one that treats the body and the soul as an integrated whole. This system, called the Waldorf Schools, is based on the philosophy of its founder, Rudolf Steiner. Steiner, a philosopher and scientist born in Austria in 1861, called his theory “anthroposophy,” which is a belief “about the evolution of human consciousness drawn from a multiplicity of disciplines— anthropology, philosophy, psychology, science, and various religions, par- ticularly Christianity” (Oppenheimer, 1999, p. 30). In the Waldorf Schools, every act, every piece of curriculum, every discussion of every aspect of life is tied back to the basic philosophy. In the Waldorf Schools, the philoso- phy drives the pedagogy, and the Waldorf teacher practices the philosophy, down to a level of incredibly minute detail. Today, the Waldorf school sys- tem is the “largest and fastest growing non-sectarian educational move- ment in the world” (Kotzsch, 1989, p. 2). As I read the article, I was filled with competing emotions. On the one hand, I was impressed by the description of an educational system that practiced the harmonious development of the physical, mental, and spiritual powers of every student.
