To assess this risk, this thesis answers the following research question: can the type of a mobile app (e.g., email, web browsing, mobile game, music streaming, etc.) used by a user be inferred from the resource (e.g., CPU, memory, network, etc.) usage patterns of the mobile app? This thesis answers this question for two kinds of systems, a single mobile device and a mobile cloud computing system. -

What Is Casual Gaming?
CHAPTER ONE What Is Casual Gaming? Over the past several years, the term “ casual game ” has been bandied about quite a bit. It gets used to describe so many different types of games that the definition has become rather blurred. But if we look at all of the ways that “ casual ” gets used, we can begin to tease out common elements that inform the design of these games: ● Rules and goals must be clear. ● Players need to be able to quickly reach proficiency. ● Casual game play adapts to a player’s life and schedule. ● Game concepts borrow familiar content and themes from life. While all game design should take these issues into account, these elements are of particular importance if you want to reach a broad audience beyond traditional gamers. This book will look at elements that a wide array of casual games share and draw out common lessons for approaching game design. Hopefully it will be of use not just to casual game designers, but to all game designers and even general experience designers as well. Everywhere you look these days, you see impact of casual games. More than 200 million people play casual games on the Internet, according to the Casual Games Association. This audience generated revenues in excess of $2.25 billion in 2007. 1 This may seem meager compared to the $41 billion posted by the entire game indus- try worldwide,2 but casual games currently rank as one of the fastest growing sec- tors of the game industry. As growth in the rest of the industry stagnated, the casual downloadable market barreled ahead. -

Consumers Age 35-44 Are Most Likely to Buy a Car in the Next Six Months; Presence of Children in the Household Significantly Increases Automotive Purchase Intent comScore Media Metrix AiM Data Reveal that Larger Cars are Still Preferred by many Consumers RESTON, VA, June 26, 2006 - comScore Media Metrix today revealed the automotive purchase intent, online visitation habits and automotive ownership tendencies of American consumers who are most likely to purchase an automobile in the next six months. This study, the first of a series of industry-specific analyses from the comScore Media Metrix "Audience insite Measures" (AiM) media planning tool, shows that Internet users age 35-44 are 18 percent more likely than the average online adult to make an automotive purchase this year. This segment of likely auto purchasers represents more than 6 million U.S. consumers. Additionally, 25-34 year-olds are 17 percent more likely than the norm to purchase an automobile, representing nearly 5 million consumers. Notably, the analysis shows that the presence of children in the household significantly increases automotive purchase intent for these two groups. Respondents age 25-34 with one child (referred to as "New Families" in this analysis) are 41 percent more likely than the average Internet user to purchase an auto in the next 6 months, while 35-44-year-olds with two children (referred to as "Established Families") are 27 percent more likely than the norm to do so. The study also found that despite the similarities in the car-purchasing intent of these two groups, their online visitation habits are quite different. -

Recent changes in the landscape of video games, especially game marketers’ increasing interest in expanding the market, have made the subject of women in gaming more noticeable than ever. This dissertation asked how gender, especially females as a troubling demographic marking difference, shaped video game cultures in the recent past. This dissertation focused primarily on cultures found on the Internet as they related to video game consoles as they took shape during the beginning of the seventh generation of consoles, between 2005 and 2009. Using discourse analysis, this dissertation analyzed the ways gendered speech was used by cultural members to define not only the limits and values of a generalizable video game culture, but also to define the idealized gamer. This dissertation found that video game cultures exhibited the same biases against women that many other cyber/digital cultures employed, as evidenced by feminist scholars of technology. Specifically, female gamers were often perceived as less authoritative of technology than male gamers. This was especially true when the concept “hardcore” was employed to describe the ideals of gaming culture. -
