Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pits and wells were investigated, the latter containing wooden axe hafts, ladders and timber wattles. Post holes, a possible roundhouse, a four post structure and ditches from a field system were also dated to this period. Narrow Roman enclosures containing divisions and a quarry pit in one enclosure were encountered. Saxo-Norman remains were identified in the southern half of the site, consisting of quarry pits, and successive phases of boundary ditches. A Saxo-Norman well was also identified containing three animal skulls and wattle revetments. After the well was abandoned wood objects including a wheel felloe, a card-side rail top and an animal yoke were discarded in it. [Au(adp)]

Due to the shallow nature of the foundations only the top layers were excavated, which contained finds from the medieval use of the enclosure. The other main phase of activity related to Saxon settlement. Other archaeological sites are known where Saxons have focused their settlement on an existing prehistoric monument such as the high status site of Springfield Lyons, Chelmsford, Essex. The Saxon settlement revealed so far comprised a sub-rectangular Saxon enclosure formed of inter-cutting gullies, that was later re-defined by domestic rubbish and cess-pits, cut through the former. Further enclosures and structures potentially extended to the west, east, north and south of Area D. Within the Saxon enclosure, a post hole and beam slot constructed building on the southern limit of the excavation in Archaeological Investigations Project 2005 Post-determination and Research Eastern Region

On a raised platform within the moated area were the remains of two buildings. Relatively few finds were recovered. Documentary evidence indicated that the moated residence was abandoned between 1650 and 1677, and a new rectory built on the higher ground adjacent to Oak Street. Moated residences were a rarely investigated class of moated site, and following further analyses, it was proposed to submit a final report on the investigation at Fakenham for publication. An early Neolithic pit and a spread of Neolithic pits and a tree-throw were identified. Ten beaker pits were also recorded along with Early Bronze Age pit clusters, a Middle Bronze Age boundary system forming large paddocks and three Middle/Late Bronze Age pits. These were sealed a Late Bronze Age surface, which was cut by a Roman date feature. [Au(abr)]

Tree throws dating to the Late Mesolithic/Early Neolithic were identified. A Bronze Age droveway was identified, which cut earlier pits. The droveway was comprised of a series of re-cut ditches, with remnants of associated banks. Ditches connected with droveway at right angles, possibly forming paddocks. Late Bronze Age pits, a round house and metalled surfaces cut the droveway. The edge of the Iron Age and Romano-British settlements identified at Cat's Water to the Northeast of the site, continued into the Elliot's site. [Au(adp)]
