First Look: The Family Birthplace Expansion

The newly expanded and renovated Family Birthplace at Carroll Hospital features 20,000 square feet of state-of-the-art childbirth accommodations, including spacious labor- delivery-recovery-postpartum suites, advanced surgical suites, a stabilization room for critically ill babies, a family lounge and kitchen, and a dedicated entrance with 24/7 security. In addition, The Family Birthplace is now only the second hospital in the nation to offer Neonatal Couplet Care Suites, a groundbreaking approach that allows moms to room with babies who are born prematurely or require specialized care, even after the mom is discharged. This model is clinically proven to de- liver shorter hospital stays for babies born as early as 32 weeks. Smart design touches—like sleeper sofas, breast milk refrigerators, and laundry facilities—make the suites as comfortable as possible for families during their stay. “In the past, the baby was swooped away from the parents and brought to a special neonatal nursery, eliminating the ability to bond,” noted Leslie Simmons, president of Carroll Hospital, interim president of Northwest Hospital, and executive vice president of LifeBridge Health, at The Family Birthplace’s March 20th open house. “For new parents, Neonatal Couplet Care will make an enormous difference. They can feel like parents instead of visitors.” “When you are growing your family, knowing that the care you need is close to home is extremely comforting,” adds donor Jennifer Hill Bubczyk. “My hope for this expansion is that more moms will have that sense of comfort—that knowl- edge that Carroll Hospital is fully prepared to care for their growing family, in any situation.” Visit BornAtCarroll.org to learn more about the expansion and take a virtual tour now.

of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and, in 2013, he was named an Outstanding Director by the Baltimore Business Journal. “My father instilled the idea of philanthropy in us since birth. The idea of giving back, paying it forward, and repaying those who have helped you— that’s something that’s always been a big part of our lives,” Bubczyk explains. For Bubczyk and her brother, their gift to The Family Birthplace was more than just a way to support young families in the community. It also signified some- thing more personal: a chance to honor their dad. “The hospital has been such a big part of his life and he, in turn, has made an incredible mark on the hospital,” Bubczyk says. “Our gift to The Family Birthplace was a way for us, as a family, to support him and the things he so deeply cares about.” Now that it’s complete, both the Hills and the Sturgills are looking forward to the new memories that await families inside The Family Birthplace. “Seeing our grandsons being born there, I was able to enjoy how much it has grown since the birth of my own children,” Sturgill recalls. “My wife and I can’t wait to welcome more MICHAEL OEHLERS grandchildren here.’’ Martin Hill (left) and Jennifer Hill Bubczyk (center) stand with their father, Martin K.P. Hill, at the all-new Family Birthplace.
