This medieval city is home to some of Italy’s most elegant piazzas, exquisitely decorated churches, and sought aTer shopping streets in Italy! Surrounded by the picture-perfect rolling hills of Tuscany, it’s the birthplace of Michelangelo, Dante and the Italian renaissance itself. Our ‘zoom’ virtual tour will take the form of an introductory walk around the centre of the city, where we’ll see some of Florence’s best-known monuments close-up as well as some interes,ng spots which are a liYle more off the beaten track. As well as Florence’s rich historical and cultural heritage, we’ll also learn a liYle about what there is to see and do in the modern city. She left all the family’s treasures to the people of Florence. by Milton Gendel Whenever I vist The Uffizi Gallery, I start with Raphael’s classic portrait of Leo X and Two Cardinals, in which the artist shows his patron and friend as a princely pontiff at home in his study. The pope’s esthetic interests are indicated by the finely worked silver bell on the red-draped table and an illuminated Bible, which he has been studying with the aid of a gold-mounted lens. The brass ball finial on his chair alludes to the Medici armorial device, for Leo X was Giovanni de’ Medici, the second son of Lorenzo the Magnificent. Clutching the chair, as if affirming the reality of nepotism, is the pope’s cousin, Cardinal Luigi de’ Rossi. On the left is Cardinal Giulio de’ Medici, another cousin, whose look of reverie might be read, I imagine, as foreseeing his own disastrous reign as Pope Clement VII. That was five years in the future, of course, and could not have been anticipated by Raphael, but Leo had also made cardinals of his three nephews, so it wasn’t unlikely that another member of the family would be elected to the papacy. In fact, between 1513 and 1605, four Medici popes reigned in Rome. Leo X was a true Renaissance prince, whose civility and love of the arts impressed everyone - in the tradition of his father, Lorenzo the Magnificent.

CUOZZO, MPP Thesis Director: Archer St. Clair Harvey, Ph.D. A great many individuals and families of historical prominence contributed to the development of the Italian and larger European Renaissance through acts of patronage. Among them was the Florentine House of Medici. The Medici were an Italian noble house that served first as the de facto rulers of Florence, and then as Grand Dukes of Tuscany, from the mid-15th century to the mid-18th century. This thesis evaluates the contributions of eight consequential members of the Florentine Medici family, Cosimo di Giovanni, Lorenzo di Giovanni, Giovanni di Lorenzo, Cosimo I, Cosimo II, Cosimo III, Gian Gastone, and Anna Maria Luisa, and their acts of artistic, literary, scientific, and architectural patronage that contributed to the cultural heritage of Florence, Italy. This thesis also explores relevant social, political, economic, and geopolitical conditions over the course of the Medici dynasty, and incorporates primary research derived from a conversation and an interview with specialists in Florence in order to present a more contextual analysis.

Emerging from the Middle Ages, the villas of the Florentine area are among the most powerful embodiments of the “rebirth” of classical antiquity that defines the spirit of the Renaissance. The villa is here defined in accordance with its meaning both in antiquity and throughout the early modern period as a domestic structure integrated with its surrounding agricultural estate. Phenomena to be explored include: the evolution of the forms of the patronal residence, from the early Renaissance castle-villas to the classicizing villas of the later fifteenth- and early sixteenth-centuries; the emergence of the formal garden and the identification of some of its most characteristic elements; the rapport between the villa and its urban cousin, the palace. The course will deal with the figure, drawn from life with a model, or from the past as in paintings and sculpture. Using a wide range of materials such as: charcoal, “sanguigna”, pencils, ink and wash, tinted papers high-lighted with white chalk, and watercolors. Starting from a common approach leading into a personal one, as one overcomes technical problems. There will be class discussions on the work done, and also examples from the past, demonstrations and three slide lectures: “Classical Drawings”, “The Nude in Renaissance Art” and “The Figure in the 20th Century”. You will be expected to draw in museums and from monuments in the city. Assignments will be given regarding specific materials, subjects and approaches. Attendance is extremely important.     PAN’S FOLLOWER: BACCIO BANDINELLI’S VILLANO STATUE AT THE BOBOLI GARDEN by KATHRYN FRANCES HALL (Under the Direction of Shelley Zuraw) ABSTRACT In 1558, a statue of a peasant pouring wine out of a barrel stood on top of a large green marble basin on the northeast side of the Boboli Garden in Florence. Commissioned by Duchess Eleonora di Toledo on her husband’s behalf, Baccio Bandinelli’s peasant statue represented a character from Virgil’s Georgics, dressed in contemporary garb. This statue was part of a larger pastoral allegory that presented an Arcadian vision of a land governed by Pan, the god of Nature. Combined with Giorgio Vasari’s pastoral allegories at the Palazzo Vecchio, this pastoral program at the Boboli Garden validated Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici’s title as the Grand Duke of Tuscany. This paper will analyze the artistic, cultural, and political context of the Villano commission connecting it to the longstanding history of Medicean pastoral art. Its analysis will elucidate the Villano within Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici’s pastoral patronage.
