Murphy History 45 History Department 211 Trotter email: mmurphy1 Ext. 8091 Office Hours: Wed 2-4 History 45: America Since 1945 This course is a survey of social, political and cultural history of the United States since 1945. Topics include: The Cold War, McCarthyism, Civil Rights, Rock n’ Roll, TV, Baby Boomers, JFK, Gender, LBJ, the Viet Nam War, Nixon and Watergate, The Oil Crisis, The rise of the New Right, Ronald Reagan, George Bush I & II; Bill Clinton, 911, the Iraqi War. We will use the presidencies to help generalize the political climate, discuss the sensibility of each era and select some cultural and social events. The entire era is heavily documented with film of actual events, especially the Atom Bomb, McCarthyism, Civil Rights, the Vietnam War, Ronald Reagan, and the Gulf War, the Election of 2000. We will view portions of these documentaries in class and you are urged to finish viewing them in the library. Papers: There are four written assignments in the class: first a 7 page essay on McCarthyism based on the Ellen Schrecker documents and readings in class; then a mid-term which consists of one essay and ten identifications; Third the analysis of a set of documents on 9/11, 7-10pp.; fourth a final examination consisting of two essay questions and ten identifications. No late papers will be accepted for any reason. Ample time has been provided for the completion of these essays on the due date. Requirements: Reading the weekly reading material, preparing carefully for class and participation in class discussions are also part of the requirement. -

Message from the Director, NSA The National Security Agency’s rich legacy of cryptologic success serves not only as a reminder of our past triumphs, but also as an inspiration for our future. Harry Truman, the man responsible for signing the legislation that brought our Agency into existence, was once quoted as saying, “There is nothing new in the world except the history you do not know.” Like all truisms, it is only partially accurate. Each generation of Americans must at some point deal with unforeseen problems and issues that transcend the status quo. Most would agree that the challenges faced by NSA in today’s war against terrorism are far different from those of World War II, Vietnam, or Desert Storm. Even so, President Truman was correct in his assertion that there is much to be learned from the past. The history of the National Security Agency has in many respects been based on and characterized by feats of intellectual brilliance. Pioneers like William Friedman, Frank Rowlett, Dr. Louis Tordella, and Agnes Meyer Driscoll, to name but a few, were able to build on past successes and do whatever was necessary to meet the challenges of their time. We should not forget, however, that NSA’s success is due not just to the efforts of the well- known legends of the cryptologic past, but also to the dedicated work of thousands of men and women whose names will never be noted in any history book. History tells us that both genius and hard work are required to ensure success. -

Camp David’s Shadow: The United States, Israel, and the Palestinian Question, 1977-1993 Seth Anziska Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Seth Anziska All rights reserved ABSTRACT Camp David’s Shadow: The United States, Israel, and the Palestinian Question, 1977-1993 Seth Anziska This dissertation examines the emergence of the 1978 Camp David Accords and the consequences for Israel, the Palestinians, and the wider Middle East. Utilizing archival sources and oral history interviews from across Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, the United States, and the United Kingdom, Camp David’s Shadow recasts the early history of the peace process. It explains how a comprehensive settlement to the Arab-Israeli conflict with provisions for a resolution of the Palestinian question gave way to the facilitation of bilateral peace between Egypt and Israel. As recently declassified sources reveal, the completion of the Camp David Accords—via intensive American efforts— actually enabled Israeli expansion across the Green Line, undermining the possibility of Palestinian sovereignty in the occupied territories. By examining how both the concept and diplomatic practice of autonomy were utilized to address the Palestinian question, and the implications of the subsequent Israeli and U.S. military intervention in Lebanon, the dissertation explains how and why the Camp David process and its aftermath adversely shaped the prospects of a negotiated settlement between Israelis and Palestinians in the 1990s. In linking the developments of the late 1970s and 1980s with the Madrid Conference and Oslo Accords in the decade that followed, the dissertation charts the role played by American, Middle Eastern, international, and domestic actors in curtailing the possibility of Palestinian self-determination. -

This issue takes a look at how MI is adapting to the current operational environment and developing tactics, techniques, and procedures to counter the threat today and in the near future. Two articles speak to the use of persistent surveillance to support the current fight, capabilities and lim- itations, and employment in the future modular force. An article from the 82nd Airborne Division talks about an initiative from the 1/82 BCT, the Special Weapons Exploitation Team, an internally resourced BCT capability to analyze enemy effects and counter threat weapons/tactics in today’s and tomorrow’s complex combat environments. The MI Noncommissioned Officers’ Academy has recently upgraded its automation to enhance training by adding a Thin Client to each student’s workstation. This and near future plans to take advantage of OSINT data in training are explained in the CSM Forum. Also included are articles on the Red Teaming concept, adapting Counterintelligence to counter low in- tensity collection of technology, and an introduction to the Defense Support to Civil Authorities Disaster Intelligence concept. Personal experiences from Iraq are related in two articles, one dealing with working with Coalition intel- ligence forces; and the other with border operations with the Iraqi Security Forces. A historical perspective takes a look at the causes of the resurgency of the Taliban in Afghanistan Finally, a reprint of an article from the Defense Intelligence Agency’s Communique describes that agen- cy’s efforts to provide its employees with the kind of work environment needed to successfully support the Warfighter. -

The focus is on Europe from the beginning of the First World War to the end of the Cold War (1914- 1991). Particularly, the course deals with the two world wars, the inter-war period, and the Golden Age, and ends with references to the Cold War. Students are expected to learn the main events and major developments of the period and have a grasp of the characteristics and workings of politics and society, particularly around the epochal changes of the first half of the last century. Assessment and evaluation: % 40 mid-term examination % 60 final examination Both examinations are composed of 5 short and 2 longer essay questions. The final exam covers the entire course work. Minihan, Director, NSA/Chief, CSS, will dedicate the National Vigilance Park and the Aerial Reconnaissance Memorial located adjacent to the National Cryptologic Museum. This memorial has been established to honor the many aerial reconnaissance crews who lost their lives in the performance of their duties. The centerpiece of the memorial is a C-130 aircraft, refurbished to resemble the reconnaissance-configured C-130A which was downed by Soviet fighters over Soviet Armenia on 2 September 1958. The backdrop for the aircraft is a semi-circle of 18 trees, each representing the various types of aircraft downed during US aerial reconnaissance missions. On the day of the ceremony, the National Cryptologic Museum will unveil a companion exhibit examining Cold War Reconnaissance and remembering some of the lost aircrews. The ceremony will be simulcast to NSA locations and field sites on NEWSMAGAZINE and GIGSTER (channel information will be provided before the broadcast) . Agency employees are encouraged to view the ceremony on one of the many Agency broadcast outlets on the date of the event. Limited standing space at the site will be available to employees on a first come, first served basis. The Commuter Transportation Center (CTC) has taken action to minimize potential parking and traffic problems on the day of the ceremony. -

History 340-01 (WI, RI), Spring 2004 The United States Since World War II Professor Tom Jackson M,W, 2:00-3:15 Office: 200 McIver Building McIver 222 Office Phone: 334-5709; History Dept.: 334-5992 [email protected] Office Hours: Monday, 3:30-5:00; Wednesday, 3:30-4:30, and by appointment “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” --Albert Einstein This course will help you develop research and writing skills in the process of studying three tremendously consequential episodes in post-World War II U.S. history. 1) The wave of political conflict, fear, and repression in the 1940s and 1950s, popularly known as McCarthyism. What were its origins – cold war popular anxiety, party competition, the reaction to New Deal liberalism, the real threat of espionage, Harry Truman’s need to sell the cold war, a rapidly growing State caring more about national security than individual civil liberty? Just how were the civil liberties of citizens violated? To what degree did war and threats to US security justify restrictions on individual freedom? How did McCarthyism change American politics, law, even foreign policy? 2) African American activism from the “Negro Revolution” of 1963 to the “Black Revolt” of the late 1960s. We will especially focus on 1963, when the civil rights movement became a truly mass movement and compelled historic concessions from political and social elites. What were the broad goals of a protest wave whose most visible targets were downtown business districts and polling booths? What were the real reasons behind John Kennedy’s shift in June 1963 toward civil rights legislation and against the segregationist white south? Why did urban violence and black nationalism follow so quickly after the “gains” of the civil rights era? 3) The US commitment to defend South Vietnam, 1963-1965.
