14 ANKUR BASSI - SENIOR PLAYER, COACH

Ankur has made Wellington his “ home away from home “ and has been a resident coach and player to the Mighty Easts Cricket Club since 2012. During this time he has played many fine innings for the Club including some outstanding centuries including a personal high of 177. He has fitted into the Club culture here well and has become a popular member of the Premier squad and a personable coach and mentor. He has also been known to knock up a very tasty curry for some of the boys to enjoy!

Ankur has previously played First Class cricket in India, has played in the Essex League, and was a member of the Rajasthan Royals IPL wider training squad.

Ankur has earned a lot of respect for his integrity, excellent temperament and solid work ethic. He has undertaken a serious coaching role within the Club, both within the Junior ranks and with more senior players seeking individual coaching and tuition. He holds a Qualified Level 2 Coaching accreditation and is building a good reputation in this area.

15 Some of Ankur’s students have attained high honours during the season past, with a couple of guys who were receiving his tutelage featuring in Wellington Firebirds representation. Quite a few others to benefit from his tuition have reached Wellington age group representative teams.

The extension and reclassification by Immigration Dept,.of Ankur’s work visa looks to be a promising step for his longer term future in Wellington.

Ankur is available to take on new coaching roles within the Club, both at Senior and Junior levels. Seek him out if you want to engage Ankur for one-on-one, groups, or team coaching.

22 Club Manager’s Season Report 2019-20 by Gordon Dry ------

It wasn’t one of the Club’s great seasons. The Premier team struggled to get traction, the Premier 4 team strove manfully in their new grade but failed to clear the bottom of the table. Both teams had some good wins but couldn’t string the winning results together. We only won two lower grade championships – the Desi Boys in Intercity One Day, Division 1, and the Leopards in Intercity One Day, Division 2. Narrow second placings were recorded by the Shepherds, Thumbs Up and the Wildcats. Meritorious thirds were recorded by the Premier Reserves, Masters and Prematures.

The major bright spot on the season’s achievements was the comprehensive win by the Premiers in the T20 Knockout Cup – with a solid victory in the final played against the unbeaten Upper Hutt at the .

Pickings were slim at the Cricket Wellington Awards with the T20 Knockout Cup the major trophy, along with the Royal Visit Cup for Club Championship

There were other individual and team highlights during the season -

• Master blaster for the 1day Smoking Pineapples team (40 overs) Tim Banks posting a remarkable 224 against the hapless Taita Yodhas team. Tim went on to claim the Best Allrounder Club award, despite missing several games during the season. • We lost a few teams this season but picked up some new ones as well in Desi Boys, Thumbs Up and Evergreens. All fitted into the club environment well, and showed distinct promise on the playing field. • Club stalwart Cullum Jones – skipper of the Shepherds – had a game to remember when he snaffled match figures of 12-54 in the local derby match against the Bulldogs

23 Off the field, the Club ran pretty smoothly. The Clubrooms and bar were not well patronised during the season, and improvement is needed. The bar posted a significant loss – due largely to the early close to the season because of the lockdown, and not being able to hold the prizegiving wind- up, which is usually a good money spinner. Also, the Marist AFC still owe us for the bar stock they have taken over. We need to explore more inventive ways to attract teams back to the Club after their game on a Saturday. (Work in progress!!)

The Club’s financial results for the year were very satisfactory overall.

Big thankyou’s for huge contributions – • To Isaiah Wilson for his sterling work as Club Captain. He had a terrific all-round season and was deservedly awarded Player of the Year. • Many thanks also to Cath and Clinton Johns for stepping into the breach when necessary, to cover vital activities such as lunches, premier scoring and generally helping out wherever they could. • To Sarah and Richard Gibson, Cath and Clinton Johns, Susan McDiarmid and John Wiggins, Jeremy Dean, Robyn and Gordon Dry, Cath Shields, Jamie Gibson, Sean Neal, Luke Georgeson – who all pitched in from time to time and demonstrated their culinary skills by turning on lunches for the Prem boys on a Saturday. Much appreciated by one and all!! • To Pat & Jane Baker for their wonderful sponsorship support. • to Bernz Golder, our Webmaster/Statistician/Photographer all rolled into one. Again, great work Bernz ! The bad news is that Bernz has decided to hang up his boots and especially to relinquish his role as Webmaster. Thanks for all your tremendous work over the years Bernz. It takes two guys to replace him, and I am looking for big things from Matt Hall and Rob McDonald who will jointly look after the Webmaster role. • to Cath Shields – the Club’s official Premier scorer and luncheon assistant - always prepared to step up. Well done Cath – the baking is delish and always well received!! • to all the captains and team organisers for fronting up and carrying the clubs banner throughout the season. Good one!

24 We look forward to the 2020-21 season with a little trepidation. The Covid19 fiasco has created a lot of uncertainty around what the season will look like and when it might start. Revenue avenues will be badly affected and we will have to be watchful and prudent in managing our financial resources in the coming year.

I expect to see you all back on deck next season – and bring all your mates with you, so that they too can experience first- hand the phenomenon that is the Mighty Easts!

26 Premier Mens team Season Report 2019-20 by Gordon Dry ------

If anything could go wrong – it did!! The Premier team endured a season of missed opportunities and ill fortune!

We had 18 seasons in a row when the team won 16 Pearce Cup Championships and lost 2 in the final – this record of success was unprecedented in the history of Wellington cricket. All good things can abruptly come to an end and so it proved in the 2019/20 season. The team trailled the field by 1.45 points going into the last round of two day games. We were quietly confident we could make up that deficit in the final game – we had all our Firebirds back on deck for that game and the small deficit margin looked to be easily achievable and overturned. Alas, Covid19 intervened! When the brown stuff hit the fan and Cricket Wellington took the option of cancelling the last round of games – our fate was sealed. Under the new rules applying for the first time, the team in last position is automatically relegated to Premier Division 2. We argued that the cancellation meant we had been deprived of the opportunity to lift ourselves off the bottom of the table – but CW dismissed our argument and contended that they had no alternative but to call the competition finished for the season, and the points position at that juncture was to be the final result. Hard luck!!!

What else could we point to as contributing factors to this dismal result. There were a few influences –

1. We were without the services of an extraordinary number of experienced cricketers from last season – Lance Dry, captain in all of our 16 championship wins – retired, having picked up the Assistant Coach job with the Firebirds. Jeremy Dean, Andrew Fullerton-Smith, Ben Orton, all gone for various reasons. Peter Connell- semi retired and only available occasionally. Michael Bracewell, Jeetan Patel, Fraser Colson, Jamie Gibson, Lauchie Johns – all handed Firebirds contracts. Well done to them but we had thought that some of our Firebirds would be available for Club play fairly regularly. This did not really eventuate and most were only free on rare occasions.

27 2. We let some golden opportunities to grab points slip through our fingers. When well on target for a one day win against Taita we lost our way in the final stanza and ended up losing by one run under the Duckworth Lewis system! On another occasion when seemingly cruising to first innings points against Johnsonville, we fell over – losing a clutch of wickets for bugger all and surrendering the initiative to lose by a handful of runs. And again, we failed to grasp a couple of outright opportunities against Karori and Taita, when victory was in sight but we just couldn’t find that killer blow or get that ounce of luck to finish off the job.

3. With the benefit of hindsight, we probably lacked a strike bowler with pace and aggression with the new ball. Nathan Cameron bowled well on occasions but would have benefitted from more support at the other end. Generally the attack lacked fire and penetration. The opposition posted 300 plus on numerous occasions. Also, it is worth noting that we posted only one 5 bag during the season – no 6 wicket bags or better. Last season we had 6 bags of 5 wickets or more, and 8 the season before.

But it wasn’t all doom and gloom, there were some bright spots and we should highlight these -

• The team won the T20 Knockout Cup competition with a fine victory against the giant killing Upper Hutt team at the Basin Reserve. There were some excellent contributions in that game. Olly Batchelor, our visiting pom belted a match-winning 67 off 47. All the bowlers kept it tight and we restricted UH to 137. We achieved that target comfortably with 5 down and 10 balls to spare. • In Jamie Gibson’s absence with the Firebirds, Luke Georgeson was thrown in at the deep end and handed the captaincy reins. He made a good fist of this role, and was ably supported by the experienced Jimad Khan and Olly Batchelor. Luke also topped the run scoring for the season with an excellent tally of 705, which included a and a couple of 90’s. Luke also carried off the MVP Award. • Our English pro Olly Batchelor took a while to find his feet but

28 then hit a purple patch and finished the season with 636 runs, including a century and a 99. Lauchie Johns hit two centuries – one an absolute match winner against Taita in the T20 preliminaries – the other a fine innings in the two dayer against the much vaunted Karori side. Fraser Colson had a couple of good knocks, and Sean Neal hit a typically swashbuckling 95 in the one dayer against Taita, whch set us up for the win. At 18 years of age Jacob Logan is a youngster with heaps of promise and who looks a very good acquisition. His 74 in the narrow victory over Onslow was a fine innings and clearly demonstrated his potential. • Jed Wiggins was the top wicket taker with 28. He went for a few but often had to bowl to batsmen who were set and in commanding form. Nathan Cameron had some good spells and Ili Tugaga, Dylan Sharma, Kaleb Gilhooly and Sean Neal also picked up handy wickets at times.

We will need to focus firmly on the task ahead next season. Dismiss any thoughts of it being a pushover in Premier 2 – we are going to have to apply ourselves with determination and ruthlessness in every game. Doing some strategic recruiting will be an absolute necessity in the lead up. We still have a good blend of youth and experience in the squad and the talent is there to be able to knuckle down, put the performances on the board, and return this team to Premier 1 where we belong.

30 Premier Reserves team season report 2019-20 by Gordon Dry ------

Third placing in the Alan Isaac Trophy Premier 3 championship was a good result for the Reserves. They struggled a bit earlier on but came solid in the latter stages of the season, when they were able to field a more consistent lineup. Acquiring a few more senior, experienced players definitely gave the side more solidity and they chalked up some good wins. On paper it’s a pretty strong unit and if we can keep the bulk of them together, there’s no reason why they can’t press on and clinch the Reserves championship.

To summarise some of the highlights – • Ankur Bassi, Bikram Singh and Nick Palmer all had strong figures and each posted a century during the season. Other strong batting efforts came from Matt Rowe, Anthonie Clement, Avinash Shastri and Nate Wiggins. • Newcomer Guri Tiwana was the leading wicket taker with 24 scalps with his left arm orthodox and was generally economical throughout the season. There were other very handy wicket taking contributions from guys like Haseeb Quazi, Jared Simpson, Anthonie Clement and Jack Hansen. • It was good to see young Joe Consedine back on the park late in the season. His solid batting and wily leggies, along with his knowledge and experience, were a welcome addition to the team ranks. • Some college lads on the horizon, played a few games in the 2nds and 3rds and looked pretty useful – namely Jacob Madigan, Joel Kajendraseelan, Harry Lancaster, Marco Muollo and Henry Wells. They’ll definitely give things a boost in the seasons ahead. • Cam McAuslan, up from Dunedin, played one game for the Reserves and a couple for the Premiers. He notched up 55 runs and took 6-35 in his one game for the Reserves. Dilakshan Dila didn’t have a great season but he’s held in high regard and will come back stronger next year.

31 The Reserves grade is a very competitive level of cricket and you’ve got to be able to play a bit to make the team. Pretty much all of the Reserves group are seriously members of the “Premier Squad” and with the normal amount of development and the posting of good performances with consistency, they can force their way into a spot in the top team.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. I get a real kick out of this team doing well and I like to promote the side and ensure they get good levels of support from the Club throughout the season. One of my big hopes is for the side to bounce back in 2020/21 and return to the top of the table. We have an experienced core and some good young players in the group and some more on the horizon.

Let’s all get together and make that our goal in the season ahead.

33 Premier 4 (Cougars) team season report 2019-20 by Kanwarjit Bedi

The Cougars were promoted to the Premier Reserves group following the changes made by Cricket Wellington and the team’s good performances last year. This promotion was a good opportunity for the team to improve further and compete against the better teams. It was always going to be tough playing against Prem Reserve teams in our grade, especially when there was lack of stability in the team, with new team members arriving and departing in most of the games.

Overall, this year the season was mediocre for the team. Despite the challenges faced by the team, the team performed well on multiple occasions against some good teams - on two such occasions, we started the game with 10 players and still won those games. This reflects the character of the team. The team tried very hard to maintain the rhythm but unfortunately the difficult circumstances played their part.

Some highlights –

• We had a relatively new and young squad and there were a lot of players who I believe improved with each passing game and have now become an integral part of the team

• Daniel Coghlan, Michael Kerr, Parth Nagpal, Mayuresh Raut and Nishad Bhatt are all great new additions to the team and we would like to have all of them play for us next year too

• It is great to see how Daniel has evolved as a batting allrounder for us from just being a bowler. Similarly, Tim McKibbin has greatly improved as a bowler and has become a key player for us

• Saadani Kadar agreed to play a couple of games for us at a last minute’s notice when we needed a good substitute player. So, thanks to him for being a true Easts player as well. Also, thanks to Abhishek Maisuria, Aaris Baskaran and Karun for playing on call for us.

34 • There were a few good individual knocks by batsmen. Kanwar Bedi scored a few fifties, Nishad Bhatt, Oli Fredrickson, Henry Wells and Dan Coghlan scored a fifty on one occasion each. Matt Rowe (on loan from the Reserves) was the only player to score a century for us this season and that was one of the best innings the team witnessed this season

• Team fielding was overall good. However, there were a few catches dropped at crucial moments of the game. As this was a difficult grade to play already, dropping those catches did not help

• Probably the two best games of the season were wins against Naenae and Indian Sports. The highlight of the game against Indian Sports was 6/20 by Tim McKibbin which included a hattrick. The win against Naenae was sweet as we ended our losing streak with this win

Finally, I would like to thank you Gordie for your support. I know it is sometimes difficult to provide good players, but you were always there to help

The Prematures T20 team discussing tactics amongst other things First Grade Roosters (Division 5) team season report 2019/20 by The 12th Man ------In the proud 14 year history of the Roosters, there have generally been some obvious omens as to whether they are on track for a good season. Typically, the first omen is departing on a preseason sojourn to a random provincial town where they suffer from first night fever and have to haul a naked Magic Legs from the local servo bait freezer that he has chosen as his bed for the night. Following such classic events, not many Roosters can see a ball the next day, let alone hit or catch one. Sadly, the 2019 preseason was rained off so the test of hitting and catching was pushed into the actual competition, with the usual disastrous result.

Elder statesman Doc opened the season by trying to runout his own fresh recruit Alex in the opening over. Alex would have made history as the first Rooster to depart without facing a ball on debut, only to be saved by Jimmy who claimed the midday sun was in his eyes so couldn’t see the crease from square leg. It made no difference anyway. The opening 2 one-dayers set the scene for some stunning batting collapses that carried on through the season. Four out all-out would have been a very accurate sledge if any of the opposition were actually capable of banter.

It took the Roosters’ senior leadership of Doc and the Skip to help right the ship, rescuing another slide at 110/8 against the Super Challengers to put on an unbroken 140 run stand that paved the way for a comfortable win. That seemed to kick the lads into gear as they followed it up by routing Petone in the first innings of a 2dayer for 110 on the KP fortress, led by the Silver Bullet. Sunny Chan steamed in with the wind to rip 5 of the Roosters top order out in response, showing he’s still got plenty of nip in his ageing frame. But he was unable to get the Belv, who took 20 balls to get off the mark before setting about demoralising Petone’s back-up bowlers, eventually holing out for a career best 164, ably supported by rookie sensation Rob who held up an end with 12 golden runs during a 112 run partnership for the 6th wicket. The less the better said about the next two games against Stokes Valley and Eastbourne on landmine pitches as only Shaddy managed some fun

37 with the ball. It was at this point some serious attention started getting paid to the season ducks tally, with newbies Golden Arm Tim and Six- Pack Sags doing their best to prevent Magic from defending his title. It was indeed a record year for Rooster ducks, with the team season tally hitting 28.

Ultimately 2019/20 was a season of blown opportunities. The Roosters found themselves in dominant positions pretty frequently but just couldn’t finish teams off and had to settle for draws. There were some highlights to end on at least, with the best looking Rooster under 30, Mullet Bron, registering his debut ton and then falling just shy of going back to back during a ripping partnership with the Pancha against table-topping Vic Uni – the greatest blowhard team in the grade who spend 2 hours running fielding drills before the coin toss and whose skipper led the scoring charts thanks to his minions refusing to give him out, even when he smashes one to gully. The Roosters were primed to end the season on a high, only for the Government to step in and save Vic by claiming a deadly virus was on the rampage. Just our luck.

39 Third Grade Aces (Division 7) team season report 2019-20 by Joe Drysdale ------

Never our best season and a number of disruptions but want to give a few shout outs (and we did still win the 1 day comp). Particularly of note to Rob Bromley and Isaiah Wilson who were so far in front on the batting and bowling stats for the Aces. Broms an average of 57 and crossing the 500 mark is a massive season. Isaiah, not even your biggest wicket taking season for the club but hats off to 37 scalps, led the line brilliantly.

Dan White, tremendous reinvention as a stonewall batsmen this season. Unfortunately the stats don't come near to explaining the patience and importance of some of those knocks. Would have certainly gone on to get a couple of scores had work not taken over. Jake (Bernie) - the newest addition to the side. Originally only going to be a ring in but came week in and week out and put in a massive effort on the field and was a perfect addition off it. Lewis, mate not your best start with the bat but it definitely came right towards the end. Thought your captaincy was excellent as you took over from Bab in that role for large parts of the season. Gus boy, shame you got so little game time with work but cheers for coming down and helping us get to 11 a good few times, really hope to see you back full time next year along with Mike Keogh.

Aces looking forward to coming back stronger next season, always about more than just the cricket. Winter/Spring nets starting end of August! There is some talk that the Onslow Originals might be coming up a grade after languishing down below us this year - we'd frigging love to knock those bastards over. Any thoughts Wellington Cricket continues to have about scrapping the 2 day competition will be a day we have to consider setting up our own World Series cricket alternative.

41 3rd Grade (Division 7) Scorpions team season report 2019/20 by AJ Moochikkal and Jonny Waters ------

With the Scorpions promoted to 3rd grade this season, we knew it would be a good step up, and it was indeed a great challenge.

We started the season with a strong squad of 19 players, 5 new players, and a half blind, out of form veteran.

For many of our batsmen, the first half of the season was a struggle to build partnerships and form.

Indra Visatiya (501 runs) was the batting exception all season, as he opened with blistering knock after knock. However, more often than not, not enough guys backed him up, which would have turned the few narrow losses into great wins. Next season we will expect more 50s and a few more hundreds from Indra the other strong performers Gaurav Ganve, Murali Muddana and allrounder Ananth Kumar.

Winless in the one-dayers, and with form improving and combinations established, we turned our attention to the longer format. We knew the tide was turning with a draw against the strong Aces. A razor thin draw collecting us 1st innings points against the Tamils. Then a brilliant afternoon of cricket saw us fall merely 2 wickets short, in trying to defend 118 in Wainuiomata in front of a rabid old boys day crowd. We had a beer with the relieved locals and knew a win was around the corner.

Our more consistent bowling line-up never let any opposition get an unassailable score against us. Opening striker Reggie 'Riju' Arackal bowled some sensational seam deliveries all season, and became more lethal, as his accuracy and consistency improved. The perfect foil, Chengappa 'Big Daddy' Boppanda took many outside edges with his methodical shape. Philip Raju superbly snaffled two quick-fire bags with his tidy in-swing. Breakthrough bowlers Prasantho, Sajin and Rajesh were crucial in our middle overs, and finisher Ajith Moochikal the leading wicket taker with 23 scalps.

42 We were finally rewarded in Stokes Valley of all places, when everything clicked, to demolish Upper Hutt by 185 runs, which North City must have noticed, whom then promptly defaulted the last game of the season to us.

The Scorpions look forward to next season and pick up where we left off, with strong form and combinations, and turn the 1-day win-loss record on its head.

43 3rd Grade (Division 7) Tamils team season report 2019-20 by Bavisanth Thayarooban

It was another determined season from the Tamils. The competitions were very tight with most of the matches being closely competitive. This was reflected by the fact we had more wins than losses in both formats but due to net run rate we had finished 5th in both formats. While we did not win the competition like we had aimed for, it did not diminish the team morale in the group. Every weekend we enjoyed taking the field and even when the games had been called off due to poor weather or default, we would often still play some sort of cricket. We had a large playing group with about 18 different players used at various times of the competition. It was a year where we had some consistent performances from a lot of the team with a lot of different players reaching fifties as well as a couple of hundreds also. The bowling department was also tidy with many bowlers consistently picking up regular wickets. Speaking of consistency our most consistent batsmen was Thileepan Gunaratnarajah who had scored over 350 runs in the season and our best bowler was Mohamed Faris who had picked up 23 wickets. It was a season dominated by spinners with one of our new faces Syed Samsudheen playing a key role in the team with a tidy and having taken 17 wickets. Some of the key highlights of the season include: • First game of the season vs Taita we were rocked at 5/22 but recovered to post 186 and then went on to win thanks to some exceptionally good bowling led by Faris 4/21 and Syed 3/22. • Janakan Karunaharan guided us in a chase of 190 by scoring at a better than a run ball 85 against Upper Hutt. • We had a close draw with the Aces in the two day competition where we were chasing 209 to win in 40 overs, we fell two runs short at the end finishing at 207/4. Lot of contributions in that second innings and the first innings included a patient 65 from Rajeev Benedict. There was a two dayer game against Wainui where we had our backs against the wall after day 1 but showed some true fight to earn a draw. After the first day Wainui had scored 223/4 and the Tamils had been rolled for 63 and were

44 5/1 in the second innings following on. Come the second day, the Tamils scored 251/5 thanks to a solid top order batting display include half centuries from Thileepan and Naresh Rajendran. • The best performance of the season came against Upper Hutt in a two dayer where we had scored 305/7 with Maran Kumarasamy scoring 106 supported by Akhil who made 74. We then dismissed them for 78 and had them 6/2 in the second innings, led by Rajeev who picked up 4/37. They had defaulted the second day and we won outright. • Our last competitive match was a clinical performance which was dominated by Prakash Sasikumar who had scored 115* to help guide the Tamils to a 7 wicket win over North City in the two day competition. Other mentions should also go to Thileepan where he played anchor in scoring 61 in the 1st innings and Syed who took 4/19 in the second innings. Overall, it was another steady season where we enjoyed our cricket. We had some competitive games and all games were played in good spirit. On behalf of our team we wanted to say a massive thank you to Gordie who has been a terrific club manager and would always help us when we needed him. We had our yearly Wellington Tamils vs Auckland Tamils fixture in Wellington this year and Gordie had arranged for two Cricket Wellington umpires and the Kilbirnie number 1 wicket. This was very generous of the club and would be proud to know we ended up with a win in that game! We are all extremely excited to see what the next season holds and look forward to getting back on the pitch, bring on the summer!

45 4th Grade (Division 8) Shepherds team season report 2019-20 by Andrew McLean ------The Shepherds started the 2019/2020 season in a new Division, moving up from playing in Intercity One Day, Div 2 to Fourth Grade Div 8, which meant for a lot of us getting our heads around 2-day game tactics.

The season started well with One Day wins over Stokes Valley [Peter Kerr 50, Andrew McGee 3-25] and Easts Bulldogs [Peter Kerr 57, Robert Shanks 98, Shriprasad Rai 57] though every time we played them Karl Grove was our nemesis with 2x100s in 3 innings. Our first 2-day game was also against Stokes Valley (Miandad). This was an odd game, due to the fact we were able to complete the First Day almost unaffected by the rain that was around. Only to find out on the second day that the first days played had been wiped due to everyone else not being able to play (which made it a One Day game again, with another win) [Andrew McGee 3-16, Riju George 63].

The next two 2-day games had the same story each time. First innings points gained only to lose it chasing, vs SLSC B [Jithu George 3-32 & 59, Riju George 54, Andrew McGee 5-55] and vs Onslow [Cullum Jones 3- 31]. After the New Year break, the last three One Day games were played. After a win over Collegians [Ben Leary 74], we were well in with a shout of claiming the One Day crown. Then the game of the season vs Onslow. A Tied game at 204 a piece [Steve Paki Paki 58, Jithu George 4-41]. Unfortunately, we could not beat the Sri Lankans in the winner takes all game [Steve Paki Paki 4-58, Andrew McGee 4-43], meaning we finished second on the table.

The return to the 2-day games meant playing the Easts Bulldogs (and our first 2-day win). A game in which our Captain, Cullum Jones shone with the ball. This is the game that won him the Whole of Club Award - Tyler McKnight Cup – Best Bowling Figures in an innings. [Robert Shanks 81, Cullum Jones 4-28, 8-26 (Match figures 12-54), Steve Paki Paki 68, Jithu George 71]. The last three games of the season we went undefeated (that’s my story and I’m sticking to it).

46 A hard-fought batting draw vs Collegians [Steve Paki Paki 3-48, Jithu George 50, Robert Shanks 81*, Andrew McGee 3-37, Riju George 4-41 & 147]. A sporting batting declaration (bowling) draw vs Stokes Valley [Jithu George 3-12, Robert Shanks 62, Riju George 52, Andrew McGee 3-42]. Right up until the last game started, we had the opportunity to finish the season by winning the 2-Day section. But with the enforced result due to Covid-19 that was taken away. Meaning another Second place for us. The Covid-19 enforced result vs SLSC [Andrew McGee 7-42, Robert Shanks 56]. Highlights include: Andrew McGee, double club award winner for bowling as: Allen Pengelly Cup – Best Bowler Premier Reserves to 4th Grade (39 wickets). and Committee Cup – Best Bowler Whole of Club (39 wickets). Ben Leary (Half time Wicket Keeper, half time bowler, always handy with the Bat) for winning the: Kelly Cup – Premier Reserves to 4th Grade MVP. Cullum Jones our Captain, for winning WJR Christopherson Trophy – Best & Most Enterprising Captain Whole of Club. Tyler McKnight Cup – Best Bowling Figures in an innings Whole of Club (8-23) These new Awards (especially the Whole of Club ones). Add to a tremendous couple of seasons for the Shepherds after Riju George last year 2018/19 won three [McKeown Trophy highest Score, Ward Trophy best batsmen and the Crown Finance Cup for Player of the Year).

48 4th Grade (Division 8) Bulldogs team season report 2019-20 by Patrick Arnold

In what would diplomatically be described as a ‘rebuilding season’ the Bulldogs finished bottom of both the two and one-day tables after not having won a game. However this ignores not only a number of stellar individual performances but also the great spirit within the team and the new core group of key players which developed over the season.

The season began with the team struggling for numbers, with team stalwarts having moved overseas (Alex, Ben) or deciding to be one of those boring buggers who do nothing but work (Dave). Behind the scenes Team Manager Johnny Blonde was working his arse off, initiating a massive recruitment drive, mostly over the bar at Moon. Gordie helped out too, sending us Karl Grove from the now defunct Bullets. By Christmas we’d used approximately 74 different players but were still regularly turning out with only eight or nine on the field, though those that turned up were putting in some great performances. Karl gave a taste of things to come with a big not-out hundred, while former keeper Marty Powell cameo'd for one game and bagged a four-for with his bowling.

Most spectacularly Avi Shastri replied to one of Johnny’s ads and turned up after moving here from Dunedin. He hit 140 and took 3-46 in one day’s cricket before Gordie dropped him to the Reserves. It was a great day for George Scandlyn to valiantly take up the keeping gloves for the first time ever. He filled in for the rest of the season and still has the bruises to show for it. New recruit Dimitrious Goumas also answered the call and started taking bagfuls of wickets, in particular a valuable four-for in a tense loss against Stokes Valley where last man Dominic's vigil was ended with only ten balls left in the day, after several of our batsmen had played long patient innings in an attempt to stonewall out a draw.

After Christmas we started to get a regular team coming together with the new guys starting to gel well with the old and, while the wins didn’t materialise, the banter certainly did. Finally, Bulldog stalwart and

49 talisman Carl Gill returned from overseas in time for the end of the season, his first game being the only one we managed to draw all season. Karl ended up as not only the best performing Bulldog, but the best Easts lower grade player with the bat. He scored 636 runs at a shade under 49 and the Monckhouse-Kershaw Cup was well deserved. His two hundreds (both against the Easts Shepherds, sorry lads) were backed up with several other scores over the season. Contributions from others with the bat were few and far between but George, Pasan Mohotti and Brent Thompson all hit new high scores for the Bulldogs, Brent’s being his maiden 50. George’s innings of 70* (carrying his bat) held one team innings together. At the back end of the season we may have uncovered some further talent in Jamie Lawton-McKenzie and Scott Barker. Come back next year lads!

Bowling-wise Dimitrious ended up leading the way, with a quality 5 for 18 against the Axemen. He topped the stats with 21 wickets at a tick over 22. Kieran ‘The Heat’ Ray made a welcome return from fishing leave and picked up 18 wickets for himself. They were supported by Brent, Pasan and Patrick, who finally responded to calls to bowl more and ended up wondering if he should reinvent himself as a frontline spinner who bats a bit. Despite the poor table position and shortened season the 'dogs are already chomping at the bit for next year and a chance for a bit of redemption with a stable team. Thanks to the Shepherds and the other teams in the grade, and thanks heaps to Gordie for all the work and support over the season! 52 Intercity 1 Day Grade, Division 1 The Shoe Clinic team season report 2019-20 by Gordon Dry ------The team had another solid season and finished up in fourth place on the table. They started off with a hiss and a roar but the form fell away a bit in the latter stages. Their batting was spearheaded by the usual suspects in Scott Pender, Shane Johnston and Stu Davenport - team stalwarts who have been churning the runs out for years now. Two relative newcomers in Regan Ryan and Kevin Thompson both produced centuries late in the season and will be shortlisted for more regular appearances next season.

The bowling was carried by a solid group of regulars in Scott McCallum, Stefan McIvor, Sam Dick and Jack Mills.

This is a very handy team, well organised by Sam Hyde, and nearly always close to the top of the table. I expect them to be vying for top honours again next season. Their only major failing is their inability to provide a team season report!!!!

53 Intercity 1 Day Grade, Division 1 - Masters team season report 2019- 2020 by Sanjay Dahya ------The 2019/2020 cricket season was an interesting and average season for the team as a whole.

The team struggled each week to constantly have the same 11 players playing, due to work and other commitments. The team played some good cricket and some not so good cricket, and were in games that we should have won and ended up losing which resulted in the position that Eastern Masters finished at the end of the season.

As you know most of the players are over the 50 years of age, and are committed to playing for the team and representing the club.

There were some very good individual performances from Tejesh Modi and Yatesh Maisurua scoring hundreds. In the bowling department we as a team struggled there where we felt that we needed a genuine allrounder that could bat and bowl.

But in saying that there were some useful bowling performances from Chintin Mehta, Bhavesh Patel and Sanjay Dahya.

Overall the season was an average one, but everyone gave it 100% and enjoyed playing with each other and for the club.

Intercity 1 Day Grade, Division 1 Smoking Pineapples team season report 2019-20 by Tim Banks ------

I think it’s fair to say the 2019/20 season for the Pineapples was a mixed bag. We started off with a bang, going 3 wins from the first 3 games. After losing a number of key players from previous seasons the team had a slightly new look and feel. Managing to pick up some good talent spotted by Gordie at the nets, things were looking up. But like other pineapples years some other sporting commitments and weddings/babies came first and this meant struggling for numbers some weeks. Even though some games there would be 9 or 10 on the field we managed to put up a good fight with some of the grades top teams. I’d love to see how we would go against them with full teams - fingers crossed for 20/21 season. There were some great knocks with the bat this season - Tim Banks scoring 224 and 140, Rosh Rai scoring 136 and Cam Ross 92* (previously hadn't scored over 50). The bowling and wickets were shared over the team fairly well, new imports Mick O'Malley and Marin Surgenor picked up a fair share between them. We are looking forward to the next season with some new players coming in we can surely put up more of a fight and hopefully battle off with some of the other strong Eastern Suburbs teams at the top of the grade.

Intercity 1 Day Grade, Division 1 Desi Boys team season report 2019-20 by Roshan Patel ------East Desi Boys joined the Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club in 2019. The team was really happy with the club facilities as well as the support they received from Gordie. The season started off well for East Desi Boys with some good wins and lots of fun. The team managed to win the Rice Shield-Best Team award which was a proud moment for the team. The total games won by team- 14 out of 18 putting the team at the top of the table for the season A summary from the team to highlight their success during the season, • • Top run scorer- Jatin Patel 568 runs • • Top wicket taker- Hitesh Patel 34 wickets • • Best Fielder- Jatin Patel for highest number of catches

Highest total runs made by team- 443/8 40 overs vs East Smoking Pineapple Centuries achieved by players: • • 2 for Shailesh Patel • • 1 for Jatin Patel • • 1 for Roshan Patel

Also, one hattrick taken by Hitesh Patel which was a standout achievement. The season has gone really well with the team finishing at the number 1 spot. We are really looking forward to the next season and getting back out onto the field.

57 Intercity 1 Day Grade, Division 2 Leopards team season report 2019-20 by Pargat Pannu Singh ------This is the first time Leopards Seniors represented Eastern Suburbs Cricket club in a 40 over One day competition.

Leopards Seniors played 14 matches in the season and out of that we won 11 and lost 3. Total point earned is 44.

Top Batsman for the Season Robin Singh - 632 Runs at an average of 90.28

Top Bowler for the season Bobby Dhaliwal - 29 wickets

Top fielder for the Season Harjeet Singh - 13 Catches and 4 Run Outs

Alongside that, we had a couple of other players who had been outstanding this season - Kunal Verma - with 1 x 100's and 2 x 50's Bhupinder Singh - With 1 x 100's and 1 x 50's Pargat Singh - Maiden 50 in the final match of the season Sukhwinder Singh - 6 wicket haul in a match against Thumbs Up Maninder Gill with 16 wickets Nick Singh with 11 Catches and 3 stumpings.

58 Intercity 1 Day Grade, Division 2 Thumbs Up team season report 2019-20 by Gordon Dry ------

The Thumbs Up team was a new outfit in the Easts ranks this season, and performed pretty well. They finished up in second place on the table and were one of the few teams to chalk up a win against the competition winning Leopards team. They were managed and organised by Sanjay Patel and Shailesh Patel. There were some pretty good performances throughout the season – Megharaj Patel 5-30 & 58* in one game and Vivek Patel 3-74 & 142* in another game. Valuable run scoring came also from Kalpesh Patel, Shailesh Patel, Jayesh Patel, Sanjay Patel and Hemant Patel. Kalpesh and Hemant also figured prominently in the wicket taking department.

59 Intercity 1 Day Grade, Division 2 Evergreens team season report 2019-20 by Gordon Dry ------

Another new team to the Club this season, the Evergreens lived up to their name – a team that consisted mainly of mature and experienced cricketers. In other words, they had quite a few old heads in their ranks.

The team had its ups and downs but they chalked up a few wins and I believe the guys enjoyed their cricket.

Mehul Desai, Bharat Patel and Vivek Patel were consistent performers for the team and Mehul posted the sole century for the side against the Brooklyn Mighty Ducks.

60 T20 Section 2 The Lads XI season report 2019-20 by Gordon Dry ------The Lads XI had a mixed season results wise with an 8/8 win/loss record and finished mid table. Jimmy Fastier, Vinnie Schumacher, Mac Ashby, Hayden Mourits and Dean Napier were the main contributors with the bat, with Hayden and Dean both posting centuries during the season. Wicket- taking was shared around with Louis Metson, Dean Napier and Andy White all picking up good bags of wickets on occasions.

The Lads have a good group of players with a fair sprinkling of talent and it won’t take much improvement and lifting of performances to see the team closer to the top of the ladder in the seasons ahead.

61 T20 Grade Section 2 Prematures team season report 2019/20 by Duncan McIntyre/Scott Lindsay ------It seems a distant memory now – playing a team sport, high fiving without consequence, receiving a cheeky bum pat from the off spinner without fear.

To be fair I think most of the lads would love to be back outdoors being beaten outside off by a 90 km/h outswinger, having a beer and BBQ and talking up a 9* to the lads and Jordan at the clubrooms afterwards.

It’s fair to say that Covid, Jacinda and four losses Prematurely killed our perfectly timed run at winning the grade…until next season!

In review this was another enjoyable season for Brownies boys! The skipper secured some new recruits early, as well as some familiar faces from the past to mould this team into a pretty good-looking unit – albeit on the wrong side of our careers.

The abbreviated form of the game never fails to surprise and no team is ever out of the game with most results being determined in the last few overs.

We had a few cracking games through the year and we ended wrestling back some strong momentum leading in the final games of the season - who knows how the season may have ended up if it wasn’t cruelly cut short by the elaborate Corona hoax and 5g.

The season comprised of some fantastic highlights with some excellent individual and team feats – Skip Brownies belligerent ton, Gav’s ton first knock, Gerard’s general splattering of stumps, a win over ole mates, a last ball win and quite a few more…...

The best thing about this season on reflection was that every single member at some stage had an exceptional individual performance and that keeps the heartbeat of this team strong.

62 Its fair to say that ‘Brownies boys” all love playing under “Skip” and he definitely has the lads playing with the right ethos of enjoying some sport with other likeminded lads and being able to enjoy a beer and a laugh afterwards.

It would be remiss for me to not acknowledge the real heroes – Everyone in the team acknowledges the thankless work that goes into firing up the Weber and cooking the honey soy & chicken tarragon sausages, homemade meatballs and the vegan zucchini fritters – Team Slash – we thank you so much for everything! Your support through the year has been fantastic! We hope to be able to entertain you more next season.

Also, a thanks to the many partners that allow their lads to go out and be a part of some middle aged get together on a Saturday at a park, dressed in disco dancing tracksuits and come home with terrible banter… we thank you.

Finally, it is and always will be a privilege to be part of the best cricket club in NZ. We thank you Gordon for your tireless efforts and we look forward to doing this all again next year!

64 T20 Grade Section 2 Stags team season report 2019-20 by Gordon Dry ------

The Stags struggled a bit during the season managing only four wins and finishing in the bottom half of the table. The side has previously shown a fair bit of promise and if they can get their act together and perhaps do a bit of strategic recruiting, I think they could give the top of the table a bit of a shake up. John Lee, Sam Murphy, James South, Tim Surgenor and Simon George were the most consistent performers with the bat but the results don’t show any starring performances with the ball. The guys might have to put an ad on Trademe for a half decent pace bowler or two???

65 T20 Grade Section 3 Cobras team season report 2019-20 by Gordon Dry ------

After having won this grade for the last couple of seasons, the Cobras slipped a bit and finished in fifth position this season, with an 8 wins and 8 losses record.

The side was well organised by Clinton Parkes but were just off the pace for the championship this season. Clinton, Jono Fair and Lewis Brock were the mainstays of the batting, whilst Dave Carline was the pick of the bowling lineup.

I’ll be looking for these guys to bounce back next year and get to the forefront of the competition. They might need to get the prolific Scott Barnett back playing more regularly to give the team the boost needed to their overall performances.

66 T20 Grade, Section 3 Goons team season report 2019-20 by Gordon Dry ------The Goons had a pretty solid season with a 9 wins, 6 losses record and finished fourth in the grade. They counted amongst their wins a victory against the grade winning Silly Nannies side.

Corey Lawrence was again team organiser for the guys in their fourth season at the Club. They have generally been near the top of the table and it wouldn’t take too much for the team to carry off the championship title. A little more consistency should do the trick.

Serge Hollis was again one of the stars, with good supporting performances from Andy Ellis and Eric Gibbons.

67 T20 Womens Wildcats team season report 2019-20 by Gordon Dry

The women’s team had a pretty good season and finished a close second in the grade. They only lost a couple of games all season and had one tied match. That tie probably cost them the title.

The top run scorers and wicket takers were captain Sammy Lewis-Elder, Penny Lewis, Tessa Ure-Bowman, Nicola Wood and Renee Sochor. We should also mention the solid supporting contributions made by Phoebe Caldeiro, Whetu Muraahi-Martin, Claire Weggery, Kim O’Brien – amongst others!!

68 Junior Section season report 2019-20 by Brian Gardner

The 2019/20 season was another successful one for the junior club. The club had 35 teams competing across Saturday and Sunday cricket, age groups, girls only and tournament teams. Unfortunately given the swift end of the season due to COVID, the club was unable to host a prizegiving to recognize both the contribution to the Club of all players and officials. The clubs financials remain strong after posting another profit from the season and the committee is already underway with planning for next season and what contributions the club can make back to the local community.

In terms of performance, the club sent a record 6 teams to the Riverbend tournament in the Hawkes Bay and put on a very strong showing in the year 4/5 and 6 grades. The Club had several players making rep teams of the various grades and in our departing year 8’s we were able to send off five of these boys to the Wellington reps in Jan, a great recognition to the club, it’s pathways and the talent we have within our teams.

Locally across the board all teams competed well from winning their first ever game to some first losses. The culture within the club remains strong with many parents contributing to our teams and recently developed coaching pathway, along with Cricket Wellington saw over 95% of our coaches complete some training.

Thanks to everyone who played a part in our season no matter how large or small.

Enjoy winter and see you all in time for summer.

Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club Financial Statements for the year ended 30th April 2020 Audit Report to the Members of Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club

I have audited the attached financial statements on pages 73 to 77. The financial statements provide information about the past financial performance of the Club and its financial position as at 30th April 2020. This information is stated in accordance with the accounting policies set out on pages 78 to 81.

Management’s Responsibilities

Management is responsible for the preparation of financial statements which fairly reflect the financial position of the Club as at 30th April 2020 and of the results of operations for the year ended 30th April 2020.

Auditor’s Responsibilities

It is my responsibility to express an independent opinion on the financial statements presented by management and report my opinion to you.

Basis of Opinion

An audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence relevant to the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. It also includes assessing: • the significant estimates and judgements made by management in the preparation of the financial statements, and • whether the accounting policies are appropriate to the Club’s circumstances, consistently applied and adequately disclosed.

I conducted my audit in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards in New Zealand except that my work was limited as explained below. I planned and performed my audit so as to obtain all the information and explanations which I considered necessary in order to provide me with sufficient evidence to give reasonable assurance

71 that the financial statements are free from material misstatements, whether caused by fraud or error. In forming my opinion I also evaluated the overall adequacy of the presentation of information in the financial statements.

Qualified Opinion

My examination of revenue, because of its nature, was limited to comparison of recorded amounts with bank deposits. Whilst I have no reason to believe that there has been any unrecorded revenue, there are no practical audit procedures to confirm this. In this respect alone I have not obtained all the information and explanations that I have required. In my opinion, except for adjustments that might have been found to be necessary had I been able to obtain sufficient evidence concerning revenue: • proper accounting records have been kept by the Club as far as appears from my examination of those records; and • the financial statements on pages 73 to 77 ; - comply with generally accepted accounting practice; and - give a true and fair view of the financial position of the Club as at 30th April 2020 and the results of its operations for the year ended on that date.

Independence

When carrying out the audit I followed the independence requirements of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand. Other than the audit, while I have played cricket for the Club, I have not been involved in the club’s financial operations or management, during the period under review.

My audit was completed on 7th July 2020 and my qualified opinion is expressed as at that date.

Note: The Clubrooms at Kilbirnie Park are on leasehold land with the Wellington City Council. The Cricket Club has a 50% share of these Clubrooms with the Marist AFC. In 1993/94 the committee assessed the depreciated value of its 50% share to be $50,000, for the purposes of the balance sheet. Since then much extension work and new additions have been done and the cost is recorded separately in the fixed assets above. The Clubrooms were valued by BT Valuations Limited on 12th May 2014 at estimated reinstatement value of $660,000 for insurance purposes, of which the Cricket Club has a 50% share.

77 Statement of Accounting Policies

Reporting Entity The Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club was established on 23 September 1993 and results from the amalgamation of the Kilbirnie Cricket Club and the Midland St Pats Cricket Club The Club's primary objective is to provide opportunities for the community to participate in sporting activities, as opposed to making a financial return. Accordingly, the Club has designated itself as a public benefit entity for the purposes of New Zealand Equivalents to International Financial Reporting Standards ("NZIFRS"). The financial statements of the Club are for the year ended 30 April 2018.

Statement of Compliance The financial statements comply with NZ IFRS, and other applicable Financial Reporting Standards, as appropriate for public benefit entities.

Differential Reporting The Club qualifies for Differential Reporting under the size criteria of the NZ IFRS Differential Reporting Framework 3.8 due to total gross income being less than $20 million and total assets being less than $10 million. The Club has applied the following differential reporting exemptions: NZ IAS 1: Presentation of Financial Statements Note disclosure on the judgments management has made in applying the Club’s accounting policies; Note disclosure on the key assumptions concerning the future and other sources of estimation uncertainty; Note disclosure on the Club’s capital management policy. NZ IAS 7: Statement of Cash Flows Preparation of a statement of cash flows. NZ IAS 8: Accounting Policies, Changes in Accounting Estimates and Errors Note disclosure regarding the impact of a new standard or interpretation that has been issued but not yet effective. NZ IFRS 7: Financial Instruments disclosure Information that enables the users to evaluate the nature and extent or risk arising from financial instruments;

78 Detail or risk arising from credit, liquidity and market risk and how this risk is managed; Qualitative disclosure of risk arising from financial instruments; Quantitative disclosure of risk arising from financial instruments; Details of maximum exposure to credit risk; Analysis of the age of financial assets that are past due; Maturity analysis of financial liabilities; and Sensitivity analysis of market risk and other price risk.

Significant Accounting Polices The accounting policies set out below have been applied consistently to all periods presented in these financial statements.

Measurement base The financial statements have been prepared on the basis of modified historical cost accounting. Accrual accounting has been used to match expenses and revenue.

Functional and presentation currency The financial statements are presented in New Zealand dollars and all values are rounded to the nearest dollar. The functional currency of the Club is New Zealand dollars.

Revenue Grants and donations Grants and donations are recognised as income when they are received (subject to any restrictions imposed).

Subscriptions Income from members is recognised when received. Interest Interest income is recognised when earned using the effective interest rate. Other revenue All other revenue is recognised when earned and is reported in the financial period to which it relates.

79 Tax The Club is exempt from income tax. The Club is registered for GST purposes. Income and expenditure items are shown net of GST. GST is accounted for on an invoice basis.

Cash and cash equivalents Cash and cash equivalents comprise deposits with banks and other utilities, bank and cash balances. Deposits are included when they have a maturity of no more than three months from the date of acquisition.

Term Deposits At each balance date the Club assesses whether there is any objective evidence that a term deposit is impaired. After initial recognition the term deposits are measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method. For term deposits, impairment is established when there is objective evidence that the Club will not be able to collect amounts due according to the original terms of the deposit. Significant financial difficulties of the bank or financial institution, probability that they will enter bankruptcy and default in payments are considered indicators that a deposit is impaired.

Receivables Receivables are recognised at the original invoice amount less impairment losses. Property, Plant and Equipment Property, plant and equipment are stated at cost or fair value less accumulated depreciation and impairment losses.

Additions The cost of an item of property, plant and equipment is recognised as an asset only when it is probable that future economic benefits or service potential associated with the item will flow to the Club and the cost of the item can be measured reliably. Disposals Where an item of plant and equipment is disposed of, the gain or loss recognised in the statement of financial performance is calculated as the

80 difference between the net sale price and the carrying amount of the asset.

Impairment Property, plant and equipment is reviewed for impairment whenever events or changes in circumstances indicate that the carrying amount may not be recoverable. Any impairment loss is recognised for the amount by which the asset’s carrying value exceeds its recoverable amount.

Depreciation Depreciation is calculated so as to write off the cost or revalued amounts of property, plant and equipment, to their estimated residual value, on a diminishing value or straight line basis over the expected useful economic lives of the assets concerned. Estimated useful lives are as follows: Bowling machine 20% p.a. on straight line Practice Nets 10% p.a. on diminishing value Clubrooms, extensions 2.5% p.a. on diminishing value Furniture, Fittings and Equipment 20% p.a. on diminishing value

Payables Trade and other payables represent liabilities for goods and services provided to the club prior to the end of the financial year that are unpaid. The notional amount of creditors is deemed to reflect fair value.

Treasurers Report – Season 2019-20 by Gordon Dry ------

The Club recorded a surplus in the accounts for the financial year ended 30th April 2020 of $ 21,980. This is made up as follows:

Senior Section +10,267 (surplus) Junior Section +16,865 (surplus) Depreciation - 5,152 ------+21,980 (surplus)

This is a very satisfactory financial result for the Club. Grants from the gaming machine trusts were generally at an acceptable level. Club funding from other sources was also pleasing. We need to continue to nurture and develop all avenues of income where we can. The outlook for the 2020/21 season is somewhat cloudy. The disruption across the board caused by the Covid19 pandemic has cast considerable doubt over the access to and continuation of our lines of funding. We will have to play this with caution and hope with the passage of time things will soon return to some normality.

Generally, we could look forward to 2020/21 with confidence. Our reserves are healthy, but we need to keep a firm hand on the situation. Prudent management will be necessary in these uncertain times

All in all, the Club is in excellent heart and well placed to meet the challenges that lie ahead.

Go the Mighty Easts!!
