Henry Pelham Fiennes Pelham Clinton, fifth Duke of Newcastle (1811- 1864), sat as a member of Parliament from 1832 to 1864. Among offices held were Lord of the Treasury, 1834-1835, Secretary for War and the Colonies, 1852-1854, Secretary of War, 1854-1855, and Secretary of State for the Colonies, 1859-1864. In 1860, Newcastle came to Canada and the United States in company with the Prince of Wales. Microfilmed in 1959 from the originals in the Library of the University of Nottingham (reels A-307 to A-309) and in 1985 from a complementary archive at St. Deiniol's Library, Clwyd Record Office (reel A-1610). Researchers should note that it is not certain that all documents relating to Canada were filmed from the holdings at Nottingham. Finding Aid No. 361 provides a detailed microfilm shelf list for the papers as well as an index of correspondents and subjects for the letterbooks and correspondence.
