Streams, Ditches and Wetlands in the Chichester District. By Dr. Carolyn Cobbold, BSc Mech Eng., FRSA Richard C J Pratt, BA(Hons), PGCE, MSc (Arch), FRGS Despite the ‘duty of cooperation’ set out in the National Planning Policy Framework1, there is mounting evidence that aspects of the failure to deliver actual cooperation have been overlooked in the recent White Paper2. Within the subregion surrounding the Solent, it is increasingly apparent that the development pressures are such that we risk losing sight of the natural features that underscore not only the attractiveness of the area but also the area’s natural health itself. This paper seeks to focus on the aquatic connections which maintain the sub-region’s biological health, connections which are currently threatened by overdevelopment. The waters of this sub-region sustain not only the viability of natural habitat but also the human economy of employment, tourism, recreation, leisure, and livelihoods. All are at risk. The paper is a plea for greater cooperation across the administrative boundaries of specifically the eastern Solent area. The paper is divided in the following way. 1. Lincolnshire Coast and Marshes Area profile: Supporting documents Introduction National Character Areas map As part of Natural England’s responsibilities as set out in the Natural Environment White Paper,1 Biodiversity 20202 and the European Landscape Convention,3 we are revising profiles for England’s 159 National Character Areas North (NCAs). These are areas that share similar landscape characteristics, and which East follow natural lines in the landscape rather than administrative boundaries, making them a good decision-making framework for the natural environment. Yorkshire & The North Humber NCA profiles are guidance documents which can help communities to inform West their decision-making about the places that they live in and care for. The information they contain will support the planning of conservation initiatives at a East landscape scale, inform the delivery of Nature Improvement Areas and encourage Midlands broader partnership working through Local Nature Partnerships. The profiles will West also help to inform choices about how land is managed and can change. Midlands East of Each profile includes a description of the natural and cultural features England that shape our landscapes, how the landscape has changed over time, the current key drivers for ongoing change, and a broad analysis of each London area’s characteristics and ecosystem services. Statements of Environmental South East Opportunity (SEOs) are suggested, which draw on this integrated information. South West The SEOs offer guidance on the critical issues, which could help to achieve sustainable growth and a more secure environmental future. -

Newnham: a History of the Parish and Its Church
NEWNHAM: A HISTORY OF THE PARISH AND ITS CHURCH SUMMARY Newnham is a long-established community. It dates from well before 1130, which is the earliest written reference. It has some unusual features, for example being built on a ridge away from water. Its church, despite being renovated by the Victorians, yet contains many interesting elements, including a wonderful Norman chancel arch and a carved-in-stone memorial to a priest of the 13th century – comparable to a brass but in this case perhaps unique in Hampshire. Its oldest bell has been ringing over the land since Henry VII was king (1485-1509). It is a charming backwater, aside from the mainstream of headlong 'progress'. A place where the generations have made their contribution and laid their bones – the very essence of rural England. SETTING Newnham, as it exists today, lies on a ridge of high ground above and to the east of the river Lyde. The central feature is The Green enclosed on three sides by a cluster of houses. Here four lanes meet at the crossroads, a fifth leads to the church and a sixth branches away, past the pub. Along these lanes are scattered many dwellings: some very old, others newer. The highest point is the church which stands about 95m or 312 ft above sea level, the Green itself is a little lower. The soil is Plateau Gravel with London Clay preponderating in the surrounding area as it falls away in each direction; immediately along the Lyde the soil is Alluvium (1). The geology to some extent explains the location of the settlement: the plateau gravel lies above a 'saucer' of clay so that rainfall percolates through to the impermeable clay where it is retained; when a well is sunk through the gravel, water is found fairly close to the surface. -

Improvement Programme for England’s Natura 2000 Sites (IPENS) – Planning for the Future IPENS061c SAC Status reporting on Vertigo moulinsiana in England: Monitoring at selected sites on the Hampshire / Wiltshire River Avon and tributary rivers Wylye and Bourne River Avon Special Area of Conservation (SAC) First published 09 June 2015 www.gov.uk/government/publications/improvement-programme-for- englands-natura-2000-sites-ipens This project is part of the IPENS programme (LIFE11NAT/UK/000384IPENS) which is financially supported by LIFE, a financial instrument of the European Community’. Foreword The Improvement Programme for England’s Natura 2000 sites (IPENS), supported by European Union LIFE+ funding, is a new strategic approach to managing England’s Natura 2000 sites. It is enabling Natural England, the Environment Agency, and other key partners to plan what, how, where and when they will target their efforts on Natura 2000 sites and areas surrounding them. As part of the IPENS programme, we are identifying gaps in our knowledge, and where possible, we are addressing these through a range of evidence projects. Results from these projects will feed into Theme Plans and Site Improvement Plans. This project forms one of these studies. A survey of Desmoulin’s whorled snail Vertigo moulinsiana was commissioned at nine sites on the River Avon, the River Wylye and the River Bourne, all of which fall within the River Avon Special Area of Conservation (SAC). Desmoulin’s whorled snail is a notified feature of the SAC. The study aimed to inform our understanding not only of the current distribution, but also the overall threats to the population on a site by site basis, leading to an overall catchment assessment, of which this report forms the current basis.
