580-St. Cecilia Page 6 February 28, 2021 2nd Sunday of Lent

My dear parishioners, Today is the Lord’s Day and the Second Sunday of Lent. Each year on this Sunday the Church proclaims the Gospel account of the Transfiguration. This year we read the Evangelist Mark’s telling of the event in which Jesus is speaking with the Law- giver Moses and the Prophet Elijah, both of whom lived hundreds of years before the coming of Christ. They converse with the Lord regarding His upcoming Passion and Death which He will undergo in Jerusalem for the salvation of the world. The transfiguration event on the top of Mount Tabor was a vision into eternity which was to strengthen the Apostles for the ap- proaching days. As the vision concludes the Apostles hear the voice of the Heavenly Father who once again announces, as He did at the Baptism of Jesus, “This is my beloved Son, listen to Him.” In the Old Testament reading for this day we find another father, “our father in faith,” Abraham who prepares to sacrifice his only son as a sign of his complete faith and devotion to God. Isaac is beloved by Abraham and follows the instruction of his father as they mount the height which is called Moriah. Seeing his faith, the Lord calls out to Abraham just as he was to sacri- fice his son. A ram is substituted for the boy. The Lord blesses Abraham by promising him that he will be the father of a mul- titude of children for generations to come, all this because he obeyed the command of the Lord. Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his only son Isaac on Mount Moriah, the son he loved, is a foreshadowing of the sacrifice which will take place on Mount Calvary as God’s Only Begotten Son is sacrificed for our redemption. The Scripture texts for this Sunday show us that sacrifice is brought about as a response to love. In the epistle reading for this Sunday the Apostle Paul’s correspondence to the Romans reminds us that God did not spare His only Son but handed Him over for us…” SACRIFICE is what we are being invited to consider and experience during these Lenten days. Our sacrifices emerge as a response to our love for God. We sacrifice by incorporating PRAYER, FASTING and ALMSGIVING into these 40 days. It’s not easy to adjust our lives, our schedules, and change our routines to accommodate increased prayer time, abstinence from certain food and drink, and to give from our resources money which will provide nourishment to the poor. Our culture works against doing these things and instead calls us to selfishness and indifference. Join with me this Lent in offering SACRIFICE. Pray, fast, be charitable and know that these acts are signs of love for Him who sacrificed Himself for our salvation. Happy Lent! Father Zig

ST. CASIMIR March 4--Patron of Poland

ST. CASIMIR was the third among the thirteen children of Casimir III, King of Poland. He was born on October 5, 1458. Although educated in a royal court, he had a horror of luxury and practiced many mortifications in secret. Under the care of the holy canon, John Dugloss, he grew up in singular innocence. One of his principal devotions was to the Blessed Virgin, in whose honor he composed, or at least frequently recited, the well-known “Hymn of St. Casimir.” When the crown of Hungary was offered to him, St. Casimir marched at the head of an army of 20,000 men to the frontier, to comply with his father’s will. The reigning King of Hun- gary whom the people wished to dethrone was . On reaching the frontier and learning that the differences between King and people had been adjusted, St. Casimir gladly returned home. Realizing afterward the injustice of the attempt against the King of Hungary, he could never be prevailed upon to assume the crown when the Hungarians again offered it to him. To the end of his life St. Casimir preserved untainted his purity of soul and body, nor could he ever be induced to enter the state of matrimony. A lingering tuberculosis ended his brief career, which was brought to a close at Vilna, the capital of , in 1482, at twenty-four years of age. Prayer: Almighty God, to serve You is to reign. By the interceding prayers of St. Casimir help us ever to serve You in Sanctity and justice. Amen.
