A TEXTUAL ANALYSIS OF THE CLOSER AND SAVING GRACE: FEMINIST AND GENRE THEORY IN 21ST CENTURY TELEVISION Lelia M. Stone, B.A., M.P.A. Thesis Prepared for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS December 2013 APPROVED: Harry Benshoff, Committee Chair George Larke-Walsh, Committee Member Sandra Spencer, Committee Member Albert Albarran, Chair of the Department of Radio, Television and Film Art Goven, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Mark Wardell, Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Stone, Lelia M. A Textual Analysis of The Closer and Saving Grace: Feminist and Genre Theory in 21st Century Television. Master of Arts (Radio, Television and Film), December 2013, 89 pp., references 82 titles. Television is a universally popular medium that offers a myriad of choices to viewers around the world. American programs both reflect and influence the culture of the times. Two dramatic series, The Closer and Saving Grace, were presented on the same cable network and shared genre and design. Both featured female police detectives and demonstrated an acute awareness of postmodern feminism. The Closer was very successful, yet Saving Grace, was cancelled midway through the third season. A close study of plot lines and character development in the shows will elucidate their fundamental differences that serve to explain their widely disparate reception by the viewing public. • Ashley Elaine York
Making Feminism Popular: Audience Interpellation in Late Post-Network Era Television (a Case Study of TNT’s The Closer) by Ashley Elaine York A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Sociology University of Alberta © Ashley Elaine York, 2016 Abstract This dissertation explores the serial design model of The Closer. It answers the following question: How does The Closer offer multiple entry points along a spectrum of views on gender and feminism, appeal to a range of viewers, and thus secure popularity? To generate metadata of how The Closer is designed for popularity by offering what film scholar Christine Gledhill calls “a range of positions of identification” with the text, using a Fiskean method of textual analysis, I examine the television codes of the transgender figure and the gaze in Chapters Three and Four (Gledhill 1988, 73). Each chapter offers a detailed analysis of a single episode of The Closer and theorizes how television codes of one episode are designed to take advantage of the coexistence of many possible interpretations of the theme under review. As counterpoint to my readings, in Chapter Two I analyze a focus group study conducted with forty-two sample viewers in Tucson, Arizona in 2013. Combining textual, industrial, and ethnographic audience analyses, I find that The Closer’s historic popularity is due to the ways its television codes broaden hegemonic discourses, break gender binaries, and relieve the dominant male gaze—that is, temporarily, subtly, and anachronistically. This smart serial design offers characterizations and content that chip away at hegemonic ideologies of gender over the series run.

  • The Closer and Major Crimes
e Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy Making the Case for Teaching Character Change in Complex TV: The Closer and Major Crimes Emily C. Hoffman Arkansas Tech University Russellville, Arkansas, USA [email protected] ABSTRACT: Jason Mittel’s 2015 book Complex TV: The Poetics of Contemporary Television Storytelling offers enough material to sustain a semester-long undergraduate course. Because of its approachability and students’ interest in discussing characters, his chapter devoted to viewers’ parasocial relationships and characters’ potential for change is among the most teachable. However, teaching complex television that relies on intensely serialized story elements can make choosing televisual texts for study and discussion challenging. Therefore, series that skew episodic yet still incorporate serial elements, like police procedurals, can prove to be a practical alternative for classroom study. This article describes how using the interrelated police procedurals The Closer and Major Crimes, offers a rare opportunity to analyze long-term, meaningful character growth through the character of Captain Sharon Raydor. Key scenes across the two series demonstrate the unusual process of transforming Sharon Raydor from a one-dimensional antagonist on The Closer to a dynamic protagonist on Major Crimes. This transformation directly engages students with foundational terminology from Mittell’s chapter, such as alignment, access, attachment, and allegiance. Moreover, it allows them to weigh the evolution of Sharon Raydor

  • Major Crimes Season 6 Episode 8 Torrent Download Major Crimes Creator Reveals Why Sharon Needed to Die
major crimes season 6 episode 8 torrent download Major Crimes creator reveals why Sharon needed to die. Major Crimes has closed its final case. The TNT procedural, after a run that exceeded more than 100 episodes, capped its sixth and final season by bringing series villain Phillip Stroh back for one last time, and by forcing those left in the department’s Major Crimes Division to move on without their Commander, Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell), who shockingly died four episodes earlier. Raydor’s death casts a long shadow over the events of Major Crimes ‘ climax, a feeling which was very much by design. As creator James Duff explains, the arc of the show was such that its captain needed to die after leading our heroes into the final battle, without being there to see it through herself. It’s only fitting that Stroh (Billy Burke), whose existence dates back to the earlier days of The Closer , was the final adversary. For Duff, the end of Major Crimes , a spin-off of the Emmy-winning (and also long-running) The Closer , marks the end of a 14-year-ride. The creator broke down the final season of the TNT drama with EW: Why he killed off Raydor and when he decided to do so, what it meant for the rest of the show, and how he feels about exactly where the series landed before cutting to black for the last time. Read on below for our full interview. ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Since we last spoke, quite a bit has happened! JAMES DUFF: Yeah.
