But how can we go beyond simply flowers and a card? Jesus says: ‘A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another’ (John 13:34). How can we express love in our everyday relationships like Jesus? Listening We need to listen to others, just as Jesus did. He asked questions of people and waited for them to process their answer. How well do we listen to others? When with somebody, do we find ourselves already thinking of what we want to say before they’ve finished speaking. Listening takes time; you can’t rush it! Touching Jesus reached out to touch the untouchables in his world, including lepers, the sick and children. One survey has suggested that we all need at least 8-10 meaningful touches a day to maintain emotional health! A warm handshake, touch on the arm or hug can be of real value.

  • The Routledge Handbook of Tourism and the Environment
The Routledge Handbook of Tourism and the Environment The Routledge Handbook of Tourism and the Environment explores and critically evaluate the debates and controversies inherent to tourism’s relationship with nature, especially pertinent at a time of major re-evaluation of our relationship with the environment as a consequence of the environmental problems we now face. It brings together leading specialists from range of dis- ciplinary backgrounds and geographical regions, to provide state-of-the-art theoretical reflection and empirical research on this complex relationship and future direction. The book is divided into five inter-related parts. Part 1 evaluates the philosophical basis, rationale and complexity of what is meant by the term ‘environment’ considering the major influences in the construction of how we understand our surroundings and the types of values we place upon them. Part 2 evaluates the types of ecosystems that are used as natural resources for tourism and the negative and positive impacts upon them. Part 3 evaluates relevant envir- onmental policy and management mechanisms for the impacts of tourism on the natural environment. Part 4 focuses on the changing tourism–environment relationship, and types of tourism that have become established in the tourism industry, market and policy. Part 5 analyses contemporary and future issues of the tourism–environment relationship, based on themes of environmental and social welfare. This timely book will provide an invaluable resource for all those with an interest in tour- ism’s relationship with the natural environment, encouraging dialogue across disciplinary boundaries and areas of study. The book is international in its focus, emphasising that issues of tourism and the natural environment are not only localised but transcend national boundaries that sometimes require both international and global responses.

  • Prayer Diary – July-September 2020
Prayer Diary – July-September 2020 This diary has been compiled to help us pray together for one another and our common concerns. It is also available on the diocesan website www.europe.anglican.org , both for downloading (PDF) and for viewing. The latter should be updated as new appointments and other changes are announced. A daily prayer update is sent via PrayerMate and Twitter (on the diocesan account @DioceseinEurope) Each chaplaincy, with the communities it serves, is remembered in prayer once a quarter, following this weekly pattern: • Eastern Archdeaconry: Monday, Saturday • Archdeaconry of France: Tuesday, Saturday • Archdeaconry of Gibraltar: Wednesday, Saturday • Italy & Malta Archdeaconry: Friday • Archdeaconry of North West Europe: Thursday • Swiss Archdeaconry: Friday • Archdeaconry of Germany and Northern Europe • Nordic and Baltic Deanery: Monday • Germany: Saturday On Sundays, we pray for subjects which affect us all (e.g. reconciliation, on Remembrance Sunday), or which have local applications for most of us (e.g. the local cathedral or cathedrals). This will include Diocesan Staff, Churches in Communion and Ecumenical Partners. SUNDAY INTERCESSIONS should, by tradition, include prayer for Bishop Robert and the local Head of State by name. In addition, prayers may also include Bishop David (the Suffragan Bishop) and, among the heads of other states, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the leaders of other countries represented in the congregation. Sources and resources also commended: Anglican Cycle of Prayer www.anglicancommunion.org/resources/cycle-of-prayer/download-the-acp.aspx World Council of Churches http://www.oikoumene.org/en/resources/prayer-cycle (weekly) and Common Worship Lectionary festivals and commemorations (CW, pp 2-17 or https://www.churchofengland.org/prayer-worship/worship/texts.aspx ).

Our first two issues last year were just beginning to find a sense of balance and content. Another offering had been planned for March … and then Coronavirus lockdown came into effect. During the past three months, our web coverage has prioritised Diocesan guidance and updates on managing Covid-19, health advice from public authorities, resources for prayer and reflection during these times, information on digital resources available Damian Thwaites to support virtual worship, and great stories of chaplaincies’ digital innovations! Given where we are with lockdown now and its very gradual easing across continental Europe, I thought it would be Contents good to focus this European Anglicans specifically on the virtual 03-06 Bishop Robert’s Diocesan Synod Gathering on 23 June, Presidential Address to the sharing perspectives and preaching from June Diocesan Synod Bishop Robert and Bishop David, and Gathering reflections from our Archdeacons on the 07-10 Bishop David’s Sermon impact of Covid-19 in their areas across the Diocese.
