GEOGRAPHIC PERSPECTIVES ON CONTEMPORARY / SMOOTH JAZZ By WILLIAM ROBERT FLYNN Bachelor of Music in Classical Guitar Performance California State University, Fullerton Fullerton, California 2000 Master of Applied Geography Texas State University San Marcos, Texas 2001 Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate College of the Oklahoma State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December, 2014 GEOGRAPHIC PERSPECTIVES ON CONTEMPORARY / SMOOTH JAZZ Dissertation Approved: Dr. G. Allen Finchum Dissertation Adviser Dr. Brad A. Bays Dr. Jonathan C. Comer Dr. Thomas Lanners Outside Committee Member ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Completing this dissertation and my doctoral program at Oklahoma State University would not have been possible without the support of many people over the past ten years. I would like to start with my advisor and chair, Dr. Allen Finchum, who not only happens to share my interest in smooth jazz, but has always been there for me. One could not ask for a better mentor, as he was always so giving of his time, whether we were discussing my research, talking about my experiences as a graduate instructor, or him just taking an interest in my personal life. I feel blessed to have been able to work with such a special graduate committee, comprised of Dr. Jon Comer, Dr. Brad Bays, and Dr. Tom Lanners. Dr. Comer sparked my passion for quantitative methods and spatial analysis, and Dr. Bays taught my very first course at OSU, a wonderful and stimulating seminar in historical geography. With Dr. Lanners, I could not have asked for a better fit for my outside committee member, and I feel privileged to have been able to work with a musician of his caliber.

  • A Night with Larry Carlton & Spyro Gyra Never Disappoints
A Night With Larry Carlton & Spyro Gyra Never Disappoints Celebrity Theater, Phoenix, AZ Concert Review by: Mary Jo Conniff Venue: Celebrity Theater (Phoenix, AZ) How many can say that they have heard great music, met a guitar legend’s family, met some of jazz’s royalty, and seen one of the greatest sax players of all time perform an entire show with his fly down, all in one night? Well, last night, the crowd of folks who were lucky enough to be at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, Arizona can. The affair saw a sparse crowd because of the local PGA tour extravaganza in town, but it made it incredibly intimate for those of us who could care less about golf. The performers who made it such a wonderful experience were none other than Larry Carlton, and Spyro Gyra, who split the bill at the main venue for Phoenix jazz concerts. The show started off with a solo Larry Carlton who chatted up the audience like we were old friends. Larry has always had an uncanny way of making his fans feel that way, and this appearance was no exception. I had met with Larry prior to the show and asked him if “The Lord’s Prayer” was on the set list, and after a millisecond pause he said, “It is now!” And sure enough, he played the masterpiece alone on stage for his second song. He even mentioned to the crowd that I had requested it. I thanked him from my seat, and he actually said, “You’re welcome.” Oh, Larry.

  • A Collection of Afro and Latin-Caribbean Jazz Compositions
A COLLECTION OF AFRO AND LATIN-CARIBBEAN JAZZ COMPOSITIONS JOY LAPPS-LEWIS A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO OCTOBER 2015 Joy Lapps-Lewis, 2015 ii ABSTRACT This thesis explores the use of steelpan in the jazz idiom. It includes reflections on the history of the instrument in the jazz context and experiences of steelpan jazz pioneers Othello Molineaux, Andy Narell and Rudy “Two Lefts” Smith. This thesis also includes scores of seven original compositions for steelpan in the context of a small Afro and Latin-Caribbean jazz ensemble. These compositions have been inspired by the work of the above mentioned 'Pan Jazz' pioneers and practitioners. An analysis is provided for each piece exploring aspects of rhythm, melody, harmony, texture and form. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to acknowledge Professors Ron Westray, Barry Elmes, Michael Coghlan and Sundar Vishwanathan for their expertise and support throughout this process. The research presented in this thesis would not have been possible without the personal contributions of Othello Molineaux, Andy Narell, and Rudy Smith. I am also thankful to Andrew Stewart, Michael Shand, Elmer Ferrer, Jeremy Ledbetter and Larnell Lewis for their willingness to workshop and record demos of my compositions. I thank my family, especially my husband Larnell, for their ongoing support of all things that I pursue. iv TABLE OF CONTENTS Abstract .............................................................................................................
