Illuminating Silent Voices: An African-American Contribution to the Percussion Literature in the Western Art Music Tradition by Darrell Irwin Thompson A Research Paper Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts Approved April 2012 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Mark Sunkett, Chair Bliss Little Kay Norton James DeMars Jeffrey Bush ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2012 ABSTRACT Illuminating Silent Voices: An African-American Contribution to the Percussion Literature in the Western Art Music Tradition will discuss how Raymond Ridley's original composition, FyrStar (2009), is comparable to other pre-existing percussion works in the literature. Selected compositions for comparison included Darius Milhaud's Concerto for Marimba, Vibraphone and Orchestra, Op. 278 (1949); David Friedman's and Dave Samuels's Carousel (1985); Raymond Helble's Duo Concertante for Vibraphone and Marimba, Op. 54 (2009); Tera de Marez Oyens's Octopus: for Bass Clarinet and one Percussionist (marimba/vibraphone) (1982). In the course of this document, the author will discuss the uniqueness of FyrStar's instrumentation of nine single reed instruments--E-flat clarinet, B-flat clarinet, alto clarinet, bass clarinet, B-flat contrabass clarinet, B-flat soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and B-flat baritone saxophone, juxtaposing this unique instrumentation to the symbolic relationship between the ensemble, marimba, and vibraphone. i ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I first want to thank God, for guiding my thoughts, hands, and feet. Locally the walk was sponsored by CCONAR (Cache Citizens Opposed to the Nuclear Arms Race),and despite poor weather the walk took place as scheduled. The 10-kilometer walk wound through central Logan, beginning and ending at Logan's Central Park. USU students were the majority of those participating in Saturday's anti-nuclear demon stration, labeled a Freeze Walk.

MUSIC 2 Thomas Hatzidis Performance & Composition Performance – Footpath, Dave Samuels Performance – Snare con Queso, John Willmarth Performance – Endure, Tommy Igoe Performance – Get to it, Dave Weckl Composition – Clave con Actitud (included in digital publication) REFLECTION STATEMENT Over the past year, spending numerous hours in The Woods, I embarked on a journey of selecting, practicing and perfecting three drum pieces, a snare solo and a marimba solo. With the help of my classroom teachers, Mr Walder and Mr Watters, as well as input from Mr Bellemore, I was able to select five pieces which explored and presented my technical skillset successfully whilst incorporating my creative musical flair through multiple improvisation opportunities. The composers of these pieces vary from jazz fusion drummer, Dave Weckl, to Dave Samuels, a master of the mallets, perfecting both marimba and vibraphone. The technical perfection of these composers inspired me to constantly better my own grip techniques, different playing styles and the creation of varied tone colours. This year presented many challenges; not being able to play alongside band members, I was restricted to myself, my drum kit and a backing track. For 14 years, the fruits of music have captivated me and I have come to learn that music is a place of passion and exuberance. Although I have had to endure long practise sessions and dedicate a lot of time to these challenging pieces over my HSC year, I felt as though I have grown individually both musically and creatively. Toward the conclusion of my year, I have been able to share my talent through professional video opportunities provided by Mr Watters and the extended Music Faculty.

A finales de los años cuarenta y principios de los cincuenta, Roy Haynes tuvo la clase de aprendizaje que constituiría el sueño de cualquier músico actual: sentarse en el puesto de baterista y acompañar al gran Charlie Parker. Ahora, cincuenta años después, y tras haber tocado con todos los grandes del jazz: Thelonius Monk, Miles Davis, o Bud Powell, todavía coloca sus grabaciones en la cima de las listas de las revistas especializadas en jazz. Este veterano baterista, comenzó su andadura profesional en las bigbands de Frankie Newton y Louis Russell (1945-1947) y el siguiente paso fue tocar entre 1947 y 1949 con el maestro el saxo tenor, Lester Young. Entre 1949 y 1952, formo parte del quinteto de Charlie Parker y desde ese privilegiado taburete vio pasar a las grandes figuras del bebop y aprender de ellas. Acompañó a la cantante Sarah Vaughan, por los circuitos del jazz en los Estados Unidos entre 1953 y 1958 y cuando finalizó su trabajo grabo con Thelonious Monk, George Shearing y Lennie Tristano entre otros y ocasionalmente sustituía a Elvin Jones en el cuarteto de John Coltrane. Participó en la dirección de la Banda Sonora Original de la película "Bird" dirigida por Clint Eastwood en 1988 y todavía hoy en activo, Roy Haynes, es una autentica bomba dentro de un escenario como pudimos personalmente comprobar en uno de sus últimos conciertos celebrados en España y mas concretamente en Sevilla en el año 2000. En 1994, Roy Haynes recibió el premio Danish Jazzpar, que se concede en Dinamarca.

More Than A New Discovery R.E.M.: Giving It Away For Good The confrontational styles of fusion and rock music meshed particularly well, and I always have time in my Nevermind: It Was Twenty Years Ago listening for a little something from the '70s — some Weather Report or Return to Forever can really hit the Today... spot. But the subsumption and branching of fusion into smooth jazz did little of value for the modern music landscape, and the continued music landscape, and the continued innovation experienced in the early era More Music Features of fusion subsided under the "smooth" label.
