Welcome to Xavier’s 8th Acoustic Coffeehouse!

The Acoustic Coffeehouse first came to Xavier in 2004 through the initiative of Mr. Joe Petriello to help raise much needed funds for the Companions of Xavier Service Program. It is an evening to highlight student and faculty bands and musicians and bring the Xavier community together for good music, good coffee, and good times. Received with great enthusiasm by students, faculty, family, and friends, the Coffeehouse is a now a yearly tradition at Xavier. We hope you all enjoy tonight’s show!

Companions of Xavier Service Program

All proceeds from tonight’s Acoustic Coffeehouse will support the Companions of Xavier Service Program (affectionately known as CFX). CFX is a long standing part of our school tradition that gives Xavier students the opportunity to live out the Ignatian call to be “Men For Others.” Like our patron St. Francis Xavier, we too are called to go forth into the world to be witnesses of the Gospel. Founded on the cornerstones of community, simplicity, prayer, and service, these service trips provide students with a communal experience of Church, as a center of reflection and prayer, while working with those most in need.

This year, over 140 students, joined by faculty, staff, and alumni will volunteer in five service and immersion trips. Your donations tonight will help contribute to the overall cost of the program including participant fees, travel, food, and donations to the local communities. Our fundraising goal for the service trips is $100,000. With your contributions tonight, we are getting even closer to our goal! Thank you for your generosity!

This Easter Break the Companions of Xavier will serve the poor of the Gulf Coast region in Bayou La Batre, Alabama, one of the many communities still rebuilding in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Though our relationship with the New Orleans Province of the Society of Jesus, this will be our 4th trip for direct service work and immersion into the life of the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina.

Bayou Recovery Project is a recovery ministry dedicated to helping the citizens of Bayou La Batre, Alabama and the adjoining communities recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. A non‐profit organization affiliated with the Bayou La Batre Church of Christ, its Christian mission is to help repair houses and rebuild lives.

www.habitat.org

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry that seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat has built more than 200,000 houses around the world, providing more than 1,000,000 people with safe, decent, affordable shelter. Once a homeowner is approved for a Habitat house, he or she is required to do 500 sweat equity hours and receives a 30‐year no interest mortgage.

CFX Tennessee gives students the opportunity to be involved in social justice outreach within a Christian community. This experience includes service to the poor of Scott and Morgan Counties in Tennessee, community building, and prayerful reflection of experience, both personal and communal. Participants of this program are invited into a simple lifestyle to be in solidarity with the poor, which includes home prepared meals and refrained use of modern conveniences. This will be the fourth summer Xavier is sponsoring a new home and will build it in its entirety in only 10 days! This summer is our 8th consecutive year working with Appalachia Habitat for Humanity.

www.esperanzainternational.org

Esperanza International is dedicated to empowering the poor to help themselves by bridging existing needs with available resources. The principal objective is community development through self‐help housing projects in Tijuana. The goal is to plant the seeds, provide assistance as requested, then step back and let the community take its own course. Working with Esperanza is not a charitable handout, but a “hand up” that liberates the poor to take responsibility for their own community.

CFX gives students the opportunity to explore and deepen their commitment to work for justice in our world today through a mixture of direct service, opportunities for learning and dialogue, cross‐cultural sharing, community building, prayer, and recreation. Direct service projects include concrete construction of new homes that includes making cinder blocks from scratch. As we work for and with the poor, the program allows us to experience how poverty and a denial of human dignity impact the lives of real persons. The work is exhausting, but the experience is life‐ changing. This summer is our 6th consecutive year working with Esperanza.

Located in Freeland, MD, about 30 miles north of Baltimore, First Fruit Farm, Inc. is a nonprofit ministry dedicated to growing fresh vegetables to help feed the hungry in our community. Since 2004, on about 85 acres of beautiful farmland and with help of hundreds of volunteers, they have been blessed to provide over 1 million pounds of fresh produce to our brothers and sisters in need. Last year’s harvest totaled over 872,000 lbs of food, 19,300 of which were picked by Xavier volunteers. This summer will be the 2nd year that Xavier will be working with First Fruits Farm.
