    The Walled City of Lahore known locally as the Lahore“Un-droone Shehr” (Inner City) is the oldest and most historic part of Lahore. It darns seems to me like the Soviet Union forty years ago”. I didn’t have a good answer to his question—but I badly wanted to know more and that planted a seed in me to travel and learn. I felt I could navigate between the two cultures, as an American with South Asian heritage. Q: How did you meet the Reza family and discover their incredible story? How did you get the Rezas to trust you so intimately during such a time of turmoil for their family? A. I met the family in 2004, while doing research on the military in Pakistan.     193 Ilyas Chattha: Life in Lahore before Partition Economic Change and Community Relations in Lahore before Partition Ilyas Chattha University of Southampton _______________________________________________________________ The city of Lahore had become one of the most important commercial and industrial centres in the Punjab by the end of British rule. Although Muslims constituted the majority of the population, it was, however, the Hindus and Sikhs who largely controlled economic activity in the city. Any territorial division of the province was likely to be grim not only for community relations but also for the city’s continued prosperity. Based on archival material, this paper firstly, seeks to explain Lahore’s colonial growth by demonstrating the ways in which the city’s urbanisation was stimulated by the development of civil lines, cantonment areas and migration, along with the ways in which its strategic location, boosted by the development of railways, assisted in its rise. It then looks at the impact of these structural changes and urban developments on the experiences of people and practices of trade and employment. Secondly, it outlines the role Hindu and Sikh trading classes were playing in the city’s socio-economic life on the eve of Partition. Finally, it assesses community relations in pre-1947 Lahore, assessing to what extent the strains of rapid urbanisation and improved means of communication impacted on religious harmony and how the growth of reformist and revivalist organisations sharpened religious identities. _______________________________________________________________ Lahore’s Colonial Development Lahore’ colonial urban development has been the focus of a number of recent studies.1 These reveal both its unique features and also the ways in which it was typical of other cities and towns.

Email: [email protected] Abstract Pakistani Anglophone fiction outlines a reconstruction of marginalized indigenous culture. Native culture has faced socio-economic, political and historical hegemony from the European oppressive white colonizers for centuries, creating disillusionment among the native people. As a result the indigenous cultural ethos gets de-rooted and creates nostalgia for the lost historico-cultural roots. This research highlights how oppressed cultures do not simply exist in void rather continuously endeavor and have the potential to relocate their roots and reconstruct a positive and optimistic picture of the otherwise de-rooted ‘self’. Hamid’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist is an effort to reemphasize indigenous cultural traditions and to question the impact of the western hegemonic discursive and ideological practices. The paper establishes that Hamid consciously tries to revisit and rewrite the native Pakistani culture through his strategy of ‘returning to roots’ for the amelioration of indigenous socio-economic, political and cultural strata, hence re-roots the previously de-rooted indigenous culture. Transportation is the basic source of air pollution which release high volumes of particulate matter. This study is based on the disastrous impacts produced due to increasing numbers of automobiles. Data gathered through research, shows that the problem of particulate matter is increasing day by day. The present study was carried out at Anarkali Bazaar, Lahore for the measurement of Particulate matter2.5 and Particulate matter10. The concentration of Particulate matter2.5 and Particulate matter 10 was measured using an air sampler for ten days in May 2016. Overall results revealed that the concentration of Particulate matter2.5 and Particulate matter 10 was higher than the permissible limit given by National Environmental Quality Standard (2010). It is concluded that automobiles are the leading sources of Particulate matter2.5 and Particulate matter10 pollution which is destroying air quality of the area. As the technology is constantly changing and improving, the manufacturers of vehicles should apply latest technology to assure that the products are environmental friendly.

Colonial period laid the foundations of modern Lahore with Indo- Islamic style of architecture. To connect Anarkali with the new British administrative area known as Mian Mir Cantonment, a public road was built that was later named Mall Road. This research paper is a descriptive evaluation of the literature available on Mall Road, Lahore and is an attempt to disclose the concept of this road and to unveil the developments on this promising public road made by the British; hence, it will provide the reader a glimpse of the Mall Road, Lahore.
