Introducing the new John Deere B Series Walk-Behind Mowers. There are no shortcuts to being the best. That’s why we spared no small detail with our new 18-, 22-, and 26-inch walk-behind greensmowers. BROWN, CGCS mind Games Can Really matter I am not kidding, this really happened last year. I played a round of golf at the course where I am employed, Starmount Forest Country Club, and in the same week, played golf at one of our main competitors in the area, Greens- boro Country Club. Here are the highlights: Hole 1 At Starmount: A member, not in my group, asks if we mowed the greens today and wants to know if they’re rolling at 4.5 on the stimpmeter. Tee shot O.B. I take an eight on a par 4 and cuss aloud. At Greensboro Country Club: Greensboro member says he played Starmount yesterday and had a great time. Pats me on the back. Tee shot down the middle. Make par. Hole 7 At Starmount: Score soars out of control. Still mad about the 4.5 stimpmeter com- ment. Decide putter is evil. Set putter free to live at the bottom of the pond for eternity... or until a diver pulls it out. Either way the putter is evil and must die. Mike Brown, CGCS, outside Greensboro: One over par. Very, very good for my skill level. Make the com- the Carolinas GCSA offices ment, “I could break my course record, theoretically.” I believe it, too. in Liberty, SC. Hole 15 At Starmount: Am “in the pocket” more holes than not. Had a double Crown Royal on the rocks at the turn. Called a bag-boy to bring me another on the 13th. New putter I bought at the turn is also evil. May set this one free too. Greensboro: Can do no wrong. Can’t hit a bad shot if I tried. Now one under par. Having so much fun I’m about to pee my pants. 19th hole At Starmount: Drinking heavily, eating greasy comfort food. Offer to sell clubs for $50. Make public statement, “I’m never playing golf again.” I believe it too. At Greensboro: Finish one over par, a personal best. Eat apple and drink bottled water. Offer the rest of my foursome tips on how to improve their golf swing. Make statement, “This is the greatest game in the world.” I believe it too. Moral of the story One good comment or bad comment can set the tone for the rest of the day, and if we allow it to, can ruin an otherwise good time for ourselves and those around us. If we’re not careful, this same scenario – while maybe not as pronounced - can happen professionally. Choosing carefully how to deal with factors or comments not within our control is important. Letting our emo- tional side control us is not always in our best interest. It affects our friends, our professional standing, and perhaps most importantly, our health. The final choice is always ours to make. Choosing to deal with adversity in a positive manner will always provide us with better friends, work, and health. And for the record, the greens were rolling 10.9! 2 CAROLINAS green May - June 2005 [ search engine powered by magazooms.com ] www.cgcsa.org CAROLINAS green 3 [ search engine powered by magazooms.com ] 4 CAROLINAS green January - February [ search engine powered by magazooms.com ] ADVERTISERS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CHUCK BORMAN, CAE INDEX Andersons Technologies, Inc. ...................................46 BASF .........................................................................39 Carolinas Superintendents take Bayer Environmental Science ..................................48 Buy Sod .....................................................................41 Center Stage BWI ..........................................................................27 Carolina Club Care ...................................................14 Carolina Turf Farms ....................................................6 Corbin Turf ..............................................................39 The week of June 13–19, Pine- tion goes to each of the superintendents hurst, NC, will be the center of the golf hosting those tournaments and to each of Course Crafters .........................................................50 world as Pinehurst No. 2 and Paul Jett, their colleagues in the Carolinas. • Columbia Country Club | Chevy Chase, Maryland Golf Course Superintendent
Columbia Country Club | Chevy Chase, Maryland Golf Course Superintendent About the Club Columbia Golf Club was organized in the District of Columbia in September of 1898. The game of golf was introduced with three holes played around the Club in 1898 but the first property was sold in 1909. The Club was reformed into Columbia Country Club by 200 of its original members and by 1911 the club had selected its present location and constructed a Clubhouse and golf course. Columbia Country Club’s golf course was designed by member Dr. Walter Harban assisted by Herbert Barker, professional of Garden City Golf Club. Walter Travis amended the course in 1917 and although the course’s reconstruction involved changing features it remained true to the original design and is the basis of the routing of the Columbia Country Club course as it exists today. Championship golf has a home at Columbia Country Club including the 1921 US Open Championship won by Jim Barnes. The runner up was none other than Fred McLeod, Columbia Country Club’s first head professional who was an accomplished professional golfer. The Club has hosted a number of other state, regional and national golf championships, including the U. S. Boys Amateur Championship won by Brian Harman in 2003. The Club will host its 3rd USGA championship this summer with the 2021 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship in July. The course is parkland style and features ryegrass fairways and tees and poa annua greens. The course plays from 5,191 yards to 6,808 yards with par of 70 for men and 74 for ladies.

  • Golf Property Appraisal Classification and Methodology
Date: September 28, 2020 To: Jim Hall, Ruth Peterson Cc: From: Larry Hirsh RE: Golf Property Appraisal Classification & Methodology The following is a summary of my review and analysis of the 27 golf course/club properties in King County for purposes of establishing appropriate appraisal methodology for ad-valorem tax assessment purposes. It is noted that approximately 8 of the properties are reportedly restricted from alternative development, thus highest and best use is not in question. The remaining properties have not been analyzed for highest and best use as it has been determined by the client that county legal counsel will address that issue. Therefore, our recommendations that follow are based solely on consideration of the continued present use of each of the properties as golf course/club facilities. We have identified the following market segments from the list of King County golf properties. • Daily-Fee o Price o Value o Premium • Semi-Private o Premium • Private o Value o Upscale We have identified on the attached spreadsheet, by category each of the facilities/clubs and their assigned category for the purpose of outlining appropriate valuation procedures and methodology for each, along with metrics and possible value ranges for each. www.golfprop.com since 1980 “we wrote the book” Memo P a g e | 2 FUNDAMENTALS This memo assumes the readers are professional appraisers and presumes basic appraisal knowledge and experience. It speaks to the unique elements of the valuation of golf properties and I encourage referencing my book Golf Property Analysis and Valuation – A Modern Approach,1 published in 2016 by the Appraisal Institute.
