Arnold hasn’t actually cut ties with his partners. The drummer’s “DNA” and “fingerprints” remain on several of the songs that made the final cut and, while remaining members Keith Good- win and Dan Schwartz convened with a host of guest musicians in Nash- ville to fill-out their sound in the wake of Arnold’s departure, he has since re-joined his bandmates as Good Old War’s touring drummer. Nevertheless, Broken Into Better Shape heralds a host of changes in the band’s sound and approach. Easily the most fleshed-out and fully arranged of Good Old War’s material to date, Broken Into Better Shape sees Goodwin and Schwartz embracing pop on a scale they’d barely scraped on their previous three studio albums. Although Goodwin and Schwartz do touch on several life setbacks lyri- cally, producer Jason Lehning (Alison Krause, Dolly Parton) subsumes any remaining traces of the pair’s indie quirk in favor of radio-friendly production polish. Clearly, Goodwin and Schwartz set out on a search for change, opening up their writing to collaborations with song-doctors-for-hire like Zimbabwan-born urban producer T-Collar and co-writer Emile Haynie (fun., Bruno Mars). At the end of the day, though, it’s hard to argue with Good Old War’s ability to combine the power of hook and sentiment. “Tell Me What You Want From Me,” for example, immediately touches on a universal feeling that makes the song’s acoustic-strummed drive and stomp-clap groove all the more galvaniz- ing. The graduation from the ranks of indie-pop to full-blown pop can be traumatic for a band’s followers, and Broken Into Better Shape will no doubt throw fans who were drawn to Good Old War’s folkish tendencies.

Record-breaking enrollment of 9,794 students for the Fall 2009 semester (with continued momentum this Spring) is a testament to the quality and value DCC provides, especially during financially challenging times. Our college community pulled together to serve this unprecedented influx of students by stepping up our advising and registration capabilities and adding faculty and courses. Some other community colleges werent as proactive in meeting the challenge, closing admission to fall credit classes or turning away new students. "We never planned to be a band. We were friends first and we just love being together," says lead singer Christian Zucconi. "Grouplove grew organically from that love." Their debut album, with the tongue-in-cheek title Never Trust a Happy Song, is quickly spreading the love, too. Their sweet and savory mix of jangly, upbeat melodies, Zucconi's anguished howl and keyboardist Hannah Hooper's coquettish backup vocals have been making the rounds in indie rock circles and on the charts. Joyful, noisy single Colours peaked at No. 12 on USA TODAY's alternative chart. Another track, Tongue Tied, lassoed the new iPod Touch commercial, which ran during the Grammy nominations concert and has continued since Thanksgiving. Add Grouplove's lock as the opening band for Young the Giant's tour in March and April, and it's no wonder they're so lovey-dovey. Happy accidents: Zucconi wasn't always this upbeat. "Before Grouplove, I was in other bands, but the timing never seemed right," he says. "I'd wake up every day depressed, I spent so many years miserable doing music. But it's wonderful now how we overcame everything together. It's funny that Grouplove is such a happy band." The band members met each other in 2008 at an artist commune in Crete.

Most analyses of public radio listening examine the performance of individual stations within this large mix, the contributions of specific national programs, or aggregate numbers for the system as a whole. This report takes a different approach. Through an extensive, multi-year study of 228 stations that generate about 80% of public radio’s audience, we review patterns of listening to groups of stations categorized by the formats that they present. We find that stations that pursue different format strategies – news, classical, jazz, AAA, and the principal combinations of these – have experienced significantly different patterns of audience growth in recent years and important differences in key audience behaviors such as loyalty and time spent listening. This quantitative study complements qualitative research that the Station Resource Group, in partnership with Public Radio Program Directors, and others have pursued on the values and benefits listeners perceive in different formats and format combinations. Key findings of The Public Radio Format Study include: • In a time of relentless news cycles and a near abandonment of news by many commercial stations, public radio’s news and information stations have seen a 55% increase in their average audience from Spring 1999 to Fall 2004.

Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.
