The Toastboard: Ubiquitous Instrumentation and Automated Checking of Breadboarded Circuits
The Toastboard: Ubiquitous Instrumentation and Automated Checking of Breadboarded Circuits Daniel Drew†, Julie L. Newcomb‡, William McGrath?, Filip Maksimovic†, David Mellis†, Bjoern Hartmann† †: UC Berkeley EECS, ‡: University of Washington PLSE, ? : Stanford University HCI Group ddrew73,fil,mellis,[email protected], [email protected], [email protected] ABSTRACT The recent proliferation of easy to use electronic components and toolkits has introduced a large number of novices to de- signing and building electronic projects. Nevertheless, debug- ging circuits remains a difficult and time-consuming task. This paper presents a novel debugging tool for electronic design projects, the Toastboard, that aims to reduce debugging time by improving upon the standard paradigm of point-wise circuit measurements. Ubiquitous instrumentation allows for imme- diate visualization of an entire breadboard’s state, meaning users can diagnose problems based on a wealth of data instead Figure 1. In an informal study, participants found the detailed, frustrating, and time-consuming to debug. -

Electronic and Electromechanical Prototyping
Electronic and electromechanical prototyping Introduction - ECAD Corso LM ‘Materiali Intelligenti e Biomimetici’ – Prof. A. Ahluwalia 4/05/2017 [email protected] After Breadboards: Matrix Boards We use breadboards for quick construction, Matrix Boards for laying out a project so it can be copied to make a Printed Circuit Board. This is a prototyping board, with copper pads in a matrix layout. You solder the components in place, and then simply cut pieces of wire, and solder them to make the circuit Printed Circuit Board The PCB is the physical board that holds and connects all of the electronic components. The circuits are formed by a thin layer of conducting material deposited, or "printed," on the surface of an insulating board known as the substrate. Individual electronic components are placed on the surface of the substrate and soldered to the interconnecting circuits. ECAD Electronic computer-aided design (ECAD) or Electronic design automation (EDA) is a category of software tools for designing electronic systems such as integrated circuits and printed circuit boards. The tools work together in a design flow that chip designers use to design and analyze entire semiconductor chips. Before EDA, integrated circuits were designed by hand and manually laid out. By the mid-1970s, developers started to automate the design along with the drafting. The first placement and routing tools were developed. Printed Circuit Board Design PCB ECAD Software (Ex. Eagle): PCB design in EAGLE is a two-step process. First you design your schematic, then you lay out a PCB based on that schematic. PCB Design (2) Your circuit design software will allow you to output the PCB layout in a format called Gerber with one file for each PCB layer (copper layers, solder mask, legend or silk) to allow manufacturing. -
Inventors, Technologists and Entrepreneurs
19 November 2013 We, the undersigned, are a group of inventors, technologists and entrepreneurs. Many of us have founded technology businesses; we have invented many of the protocols, systems and devices that make the Internet work, and we are collectively listed as the inventors on over 150 patents. We write to you today about the U.S. patent system. That system is broken. Based on our experiences building and deploying new digital technologies, we believe that software patents are doing more harm than good. Perhaps it is time to reexamine the idea, dating from the 1980s, that government-issued monopolies on algorithms, protocols and data structures are the best way to promote the advancement of computer science. But that will be a complex task, and one we don't expect to happen quickly. Unfortunately, aspects of the problem have become so acute they must be addressed immediately. Broad, vague patents covering software-type inventions—some of which we ourselves are listed as inventors on—are a malfunctioning component of America's inventive machinery. This is particularly the case when those patents end up in the hands of non-practicing patent trolls. These non-practicing entities do not make or sell anything. Their exploitation of patents as a tool for extortion is undermining America’s technological progress; patent trolls are collecting taxes on innovation by extracting billions of dollars in dubious licensing fees, and wasting the time and management resources of creative businesses. Many of us would have achieved much less in our careers if the trolling problem had been as dire in past decades as it is now. -

A SOFTWARE DEFINED RADIO TESTBED FOR RESEARCH IN DYNAMIC SPECTRUM ACCESS A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Purdue University by David A. Clendenen In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Engineering May 2012 Purdue University Fort Wayne, Indiana ii For my uncle, Jeffrey Davis, who instilled in me from a young age the desire to learn how things work and inspired me to become an electrical engineer. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I first thank Dr. Todor Cooklev for providing me with the opportunity to expand my engineering background to the world of wireless communications and software defined radio. I appreciate his patience and flexibility in working with me as I balanced my career, graduate courses and this research. Next, I thank my graduate committee; Dr. Chao Chen and Dr. Yanfei Liu and my thesis format advisor, Barbara Lloyd for their support and direction in my thesis writing. I also thank Dr. Elizabeth Thompson for first informing me of the National Science Foundation grant and Dr. Donald Mueller and Dr. Carlos Raez for selecting me as a recipient for the grant. I would also like to thank my colleagues at Regal Beloit and my manager, Dr. Roger Becerra, whose support and flexibility allowed me to accomplish my professional and educational goals. I thank my parents for always encouraging me and instilling in me the value of hard work. Most importantly I thank my wife, Tish, for her encouragement and understanding throughout my graduate studies. Above all else, without her support none of this would have been possible. -

SPICE 1: Tutorial
SPICE 1: Tutorial Chris Winstead January 15, 2015 Chris Winstead SPICE 1: Tutorial January 15, 2015 1 / 28 Getting Started SPICE is designed to run as a classic console tool, aka a terminal command. If you are unfamiliar with the Linux terminal, you should spend some time to get acquainted with basic terminal commands, and how to organize and navigate directory structures (a directory is often called a \folder"). I prepared a quick-start terminal tutorial that you can review here: https://electronics.wiki.usu.edu/Linux_Tutorial If you plan to use NGSpice in the lab (which I recommend), then you may want to check out our NGSpice wiki page: https://electronics.wiki.usu.edu/NGSpice You can also find NGSpice information and the full manual here: http://ngspice.sourceforge.net/ You will also need to choose a text editor for preparing your SPICE files. I like to use Emacs (it has an optional SPICE mode that is pretty handy). Most students prefer to use GEdit. You can launch these editors from the terminal. Chris Winstead SPICE 1: Tutorial January 15, 2015 2 / 28 Creating a Project First, you'll want to open a terminal window and create a directory tree for your work this semester. You could setup your directory tree using these commands: cd mkdir 3410 cd 3410 mkdir spice cd spice mkdir lab1 cd lab1 Here the cd command is used to change directories, and the mkdir command is used to create a directory. Chris Winstead SPICE 1: Tutorial January 15, 2015 3 / 28 Create a new SPICE file SPICE files (often called \decks" for historical reasons) are plain text files.
