  • Italy's Rock Band Wins Eurovision
ARAB TIMES, MONDAY, MAY 24, 2021 NEWS/FEATURES 13 People & Places TV Streaming rise Networks ‘bank’ on reboots, franchises By David Bauder and Lynn Elber verything old is new again on network television, Eand without apology. As the TV industry rushes into the future with streaming services, traditional broadcasters unveiled 2021-22 schedules that rely heavily on familiar series brands and reboots of decades-old shows. There’s even a two-fer based on “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” the Las Vegas-set forensics drama that dazzled viewers when it arrived in 2000. Get ready for “CSI: Vegas,” a CBS remake complete with original stars William Petersen and Jorja Fox and, in a sign of diversity progress, Black actor Paula Newsome as the lead investigator. The annual network tradition of wooing potential ad buyers with lavish New York City presentations of up- coming shows and their stars was reduced by COVID to a virtual presentation for the sec- ond year. But a deeper disruption came with the announcement that Discovery and Warner- Media plan to merge, adding yet another media behemoth with streaming services — Discovery+ and HBO Max Kimmel — to the fray that began with Netflix. The broadcast networks aren’t merely on the sidelines. Most are aligned with streaming services through their corporate owners, such as Disney’s ABC and Disney+, which means they’re both competing and cooperating. The strategy to double-down on standard network fare comes as lavish streamed shows including “The Crown” draw critical acclaim, Emmy Awards and subscribers. But it’s ad dollars that the networks need, and they’re uniquely positioned to provide the mass Maneskin from Italy celebrate with the trophy after winning the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest at Ahoy arena in Rotterdam, Netherlands, May 22.

As ever, we’ve compiled a full guide to the most bizarre, brilliant and boring things the contest has to offer... ////////////////////////////////// Semi Final 1.................3-21 Tuesday’s semi is the stronger of the two, with Cypriot- censured Satanism, bloopy Lithuanian club-pop and a wailing Ukrainian rave that will leave your head spinning. Expect upsets galore as the favourites all fight for a place. Semi Final 2................22-34 A slightly more standard affair, there’s less of the outright bonkers stuff on Thursday – but there’s still a couple of acts that you won’t want to miss, including Polish TV hosts, Danish 80s throwbacks and a possible cameo from Flo Rida. The Big Six.................41-47 When acts have a guaranteed place in the final, that’s usually an excuse to phone stuff in – but France and Italy are hot favourites this year (and Germany is a hot mess) so the Big Six are well worth a preview. • Eurovision-2021-Guide-Digital
A few months ago, I asked people on Twitter if they’d be interested in reading a zine on Eurovision. “A print zine?” People asked. “Of course!” I stupidly replied, not remembering how much of the Eurovision season action unfolds in May. Silly me! So while there’s not a print version, I hope you’ll enjoy this downloadable PDF from the comfort of your own home. I can’t believe we’re coming up to the end of Eurovision. It seems like hardly any time has passed at all since we cuddled up with some hot cocoa, watching artists shiver through Albania’s outdoor Festival I Kenges. In the past five months, we’ve had some bad times - like Armenia dropping out, and some more bad times - like an oppressive dictatorship in Belarus trying to send pro-government propaganda to the concert - and even more bad times, like the racism demonstrated from within the fandom toward people like Jeangu. Yet we’ve also had a lot of joy. The five nights of Sanremo felt less like a slog and more like a slumber party with our friends Amadeus and Fiorello. Many of the returning artists who missed Eurovision 2020 came back with even stronger songs this year. And yes, we all laughed - in retrospect - at the ridiculously star-studded, drawn-out spectacular to launch Moldova's song - less a celebration of Sugar and more a celebration of Kirkorov. Anyway, at the very last second, here is the Dudepoints Guide to Eurovision 2021. Enjoy!
