• Revisiting Transnational Media Flow in Nusantara: Cross-Border Content Broadcasting in Indonesia and Malaysia
Southeast Asian Studies, Vol. 49, No. 2, September 2011 Revisiting Transnational Media Flow in Nusantara: Cross-border Content Broadcasting in Indonesia and Malaysia Nuurrianti Jalli* and Yearry Panji Setianto** Previous studies on transnational media have emphasized transnational media organizations and tended to ignore the role of cross-border content, especially in a non-Western context. This study aims to fill theoretical gaps within this scholarship by providing an analysis of the Southeast Asian media sphere, focusing on Indonesia and Malaysia in a historical context—transnational media flow before 2010. The two neighboring nations of Indonesia and Malaysia have many things in common, from culture to language and religion. This study not only explores similarities in the reception and appropriation of transnational content in both countries but also investigates why, to some extent, each had a different attitude toward content pro- duced by the other. It also looks at how governments in these two nations control the flow of transnational media content. Focusing on broadcast media, the study finds that cross-border media flow between Indonesia and Malaysia was made pos- sible primarily in two ways: (1) illicit or unintended media exchange, and (2) legal and intended media exchange. Illicit media exchange was enabled through the use of satellite dishes and antennae near state borders, as well as piracy. Legal and intended media exchange was enabled through state collaboration and the purchase of media rights; both governments also utilized several bodies of laws to assist in controlling transnational media content. Based on our analysis, there is a path of transnational media exchange between these two countries.

Bodies of Sound, Agents of Muslim Malayness: Malaysian Identity Politics and the Symbolic Ecology of the Gambus Lute Joseph M. Kinzer A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2017 Reading Committee: Christina Sunardi, Chair Patricia Campbell Laurie Sears Philip Schuyler Meilu Ho Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Music ii ©Copyright 2017 Joseph M. Kinzer iii University of Washington Abstract Bodies of Sound, Agents of Muslim Malayness: Malaysian Identity Politics and the Symbolic Ecology of the Gambus Lute Joseph M. Kinzer Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Dr. Christina Sunardi Music In this dissertation, I show how Malay-identified performing arts are used to fold in Malay Muslim identity into the urban milieu, not as an alternative to Kuala Lumpur’s contemporary cultural trajectory, but as an integrated part of it. I found this identity negotiation occurring through secular performance traditions of a particular instrument known as the gambus (lute), an Arabic instrument with strong ties to Malay history and trade. During my fieldwork, I discovered that the gambus in Malaysia is a potent symbol through which Malay Muslim identity is negotiated based on various local and transnational conceptions of Islamic modernity. My dissertation explores the material and virtual pathways that converge a number of historical, geographic, and socio-political sites—including the National Museum and the National Conservatory for the Arts, iv Culture, and Heritage—in my experiences studying the gambus and the wider transmission of muzik Melayu (Malay music) in urban Malaysia. I argue that the gambus complicates articulations of Malay identity through multiple agentic forces, including people (musicians, teachers, etc.), the gambus itself (its materials and iconicity), various governmental and non-governmental institutions, and wider oral, aural, and material transmission processes.

  • Malay Music in Singapore by Muhammad Hafiz Bin Salleh, Written in August 2010 National Library Board, Singapore
ARTICLE Malay Music in Singapore by Muhammad Hafiz bin Salleh, written in August 2010 National Library Board, Singapore Its forms and genres have evolved through the ages, but the unmistakeably Malay sound and feel of the music remains constant. Introduction Malay music in Singapore dates back to the early 19th century. Highly influenced by the early migrants to Singapore, it began its development in an environment rich with diverse music forms brought to Singapore by the migrants who hailed from different parts of Indonesia and Malaysia. Because of its small size and intense activity, Singapore grew into a hub for Malay music, although there is little published documentation about this strand of Malay history. From the earliest times, there existed several music genres, including Asli , Malay music is characterised by its slow and gentle melodies and simple lyrics that often tell a moving story; Zapin, a traditional dance that originated from the Middle East involving rigorous, well- coordinated hand movements and intricate footwork, accompanied by singing and music created with instruments like the violin, harmonium, accordion and gambus ( lute ); and the ever popular Dondang Sayang , a vocal performance in which two parties converse with each other using quatrains. This is usually performed during Peranakan weddings. When the Malay film industry blossomed in the ‘50s and ‘60s with almost 50 films produced by the Malay production houses in Singapore, Malay music too enjoyed much exposure, since music was an essential element in Malay films. The separation of Singapore from Malaysia meant that the film and music action shifted to Kuala Lumpur, to tap on the huge domestic market in Malaysia.
