Two common types of rebellion are against socially fitting into a group (rebellion of non-conformity) and rebellion against adult authority (rebellion of non-compliance). Rebellion may cause young people to rebel against self-interests. They may refuse to do school work or even physically hurt themselves. It can cause them to experiment with high risk excitement. High risk excitement is smoking, drinking, drug abuse, and sexual exploration without a relationship. They reject safe rules and restraints. Serious rebellion can begin at the age of nine. Teens struggle for identity, acceptance, attention, control, and freedom. Teens say, "I just want freedom." While teens want freedom they still rely upon parents for basic needs.
