E a todos aqueles que de alguma forma contribuíram nesse percurso intenso e recompensador. 5 RESUMO Historicamente o cinema japonês fez uso de sua música tradicional (hôgaku) e da música em estilo ocidental (yôgaku) para compor suas trilhas sonoras, criando uma atmosfera musical híbrida. O objetivo dessa pesquisa é identificar e demonstrar essa particularidade da prática musical nas trilhas sonoras japonesas, tendo como objeto o compositor Joe Hisaishi (1950), que segue essa tradição em mesclar tais elementos em suas trilhas. Aplicando métodos de análise musical interpretativa da nova musicologia e da hermenêutica musical (KRAMER), busca-se trabalhar a significação musical no filme Princessa Mononoke (1997) dirigido por Hayao Miyazaki, dialogando com seu contexto cultural e a simbologia dos elementos musicais na narrativa. Princesa Mononoke 6 ABSTRACT Since the beginning, Japanese cinema uses the traditional music (hôgaku) and the Western-style music (yôgaku) to write the musical score, creating a hybrid musical atmosphere. This research aims to identify and demonstrate this singularity of the Japanese musical practice in soundtracks, studying Joe Hisaishi (1950) as research object. Hisaishi follows the tradition of mixing those elements. Applying new musicology and musical hermeneutics methods of interpretive musical analysis (KRAMER), we seek to make a musical meaning of the Hayao Miyazaki's movie Princess Mononoke (1997), dialoguing with its cultural context and the symbology of musical elements at narrative. Apart from standard unaccompanied works by Tōru Takemitsu and Kazuo Fukushima, other Japanese flute compositions have yet to establish a permanent place in the standard flute repertoire. The purpose of this document is to broaden awareness of Japanese flute compositions through the discussion, analysis, and evaluation of substantial flute sonatas by three important Japanese composers: Ikuma Dan (1924-2001), Hikaru Hayashi (1931- 2012), and Akira Tamba (b. 1932). A brief history of traditional Japanese flute music, a summary of Western influences in Japan’s musical development, and an overview of major Japanese flute compositions are included to provide historical and musical context for the composers and works in this document. Discussions on each composer’s background, flute works, and compositional style inform the following flute sonata analyses, which reveal the unique musical language and characteristics that qualify each work for inclusion in the standard flute repertoire. These analyses intend to increase awareness and performance of other Japanese flute compositions specifically and lesser- known repertoire generally.

Hughes 1. Introduction: folk song and folk performing arts When the new word min’yō – literally ‘folk song’ – began to gain currency in Japan in the early twentieth century, many people were slow to grasp its intent. When a ‘min’yō concert’ was advertised in Tokyo in 1920, some people bought tickets expecting to hear the music of the nō theatre, since the character used for -yō (謡) is the same as that for nō singing (utai); others, notably the police, took the element min- (民) in the sense given by the left-wing movement, anticipating a rally singing ‘people’s songs’ (Kikuchi 1980: 43). In 1929 a music critic complained about the song Tōkyō kōshinkyoku (Tokyo March), which he called a min’yō. This was, however, not a ‘folk song’ but a Western-influenced tune written for a film soundtrack, with lyrics replete with trendy English (Kurata 1979: 338). The idea that a term was needed specifically to designate songs of rural pedigree, songs of the ‘folk’, was slow to catch on. In traditional Japan boundaries between rural songs of various sorts and the kinds of popular songs discussed in the preceding chapter were rarely clear. The ‘folk’ themselves had a simple and ancient native term for their ditties: uta, ‘song’; modifiers were prefixed as needed (for exampletaue uta, ‘rice-planting song’).1 The modern concept of ‘the folk’ springs from the German Romantics.

CHEN Yingshi (Professor of Musicology, Shanghai Conservatory of Music) Good evening, ladies and gentlemen! I am a retired professor of Musicology from Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Today, I feel so honored to receive this year’s award of Koizumi Fumio Music Prize. This award comes to me unexpected, especially at my age of 80s. The award that I receive, the 26th Fumio Koizumi Music Award, is named after the eminent Japanese ethnomusicologist Mr. Fumio Koizumi. This makes me think of him, as well as the story of how we met. After the normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations in 1975, a cultural delegation was sent by the Japanese government to visit China to promote cultural exchanges. At that time, I was one of the staff members at China’s Ministry of Culture. I was arranged host the delegation. But I could not communicate with any delegate since I did not speak Japanese. All I could do was to accompany them together with our Minister of Culture. We went to the "Quanjude Roast Duck Restaurant" to enjoy the dinner. This restaurant was founded in the third year (1864) of Tongzhi period of Qing Dynasty. During the dinner, I learnt that there was an ethnomusicologist in the delegation, Mr. Fumio Koizumi who taught at Tokyo National University of the Arts. But I did not expect any of the following stories after this event. In 1979, I started teaching myself Japanese following the Japanese language teaching program broadcasted by the Beijing People's Radio Station.
