Curriculum Vitae R. LUKE DuBOIS b.1975, Morristown, NJ Lives and works in New York, NY R. Luke DuBois is a composer, artist, and performer who explores the temporal, verbal, and visual structures of cultural and personal ephemera. He holds a doctorate in music composition from Columbia University, and has lectured and taught worldwide on interactive sound and video performance. He has collaborated on interactive performance, installation, and music production work with many artists and organizations including Toni Dove, Todd Reynolds, Chris Mann, Bora Yoon, Michael Joaquin Grey, Matthew Ritchie, Elliott Sharp, Michael Gordon, Maya Lin, Bang on a Can, Engine 27, Harvestworks, and LEMUR, and was the director of the Princeton Laptop Orchestra for its 2007 season. Stemming from his investigations of “time-lapse phonography,” his work is a sonic and encyclopedic relative to time-lapse photography. Just as a long camera exposure fuses motion into a single image, his projects reveal the average sonority, visual language, and vocabulary in music, film, text, or cultural information. Exhibitions of his work include: the Insitut Valencià d’Art Modern, Spain; Haus der elektronischen Künste, Switzerland; 2008 Democratic National Convention, Denver; Weisman Art Museum, Minneapolis; San Jose Museum of Art; National Constitution Center, Philadelphia; Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art; Daelim Contemporary Art Museum, Seoul; 2007 Sundance Film Festival; the Sydney Film Festival; the Smithsonian American Art Museum; PROSPECT.2 New Orleans; and the Aspen Institute. DuBois' work and writing has appeared in print and online in the New York Times, National Geographic, and Esquire Magazine, and he was an invited speaker at the 2016 TED Conference. A major survey of his work, NOW, received its premiere at the Ringling Museum of Art in 2014, with a catalogue published by Scala Art & Heritage Publishers. An active visual and musical collaborator, DuBois is the co-author of Jitter, a software suite for the real-time manipulation of matrix data developed by San Francisco-based software company Cycling'74. He appears on nearly twenty-five albums both individually and as part of the avant-garde electronic group The Freight Elevator Quartet. He currently performs as part of Bioluminescence, a duo with vocalist Lesley Flanigan that explores the modality of the human voice, and in Fair Use, a trio with Zach Layton and Matthew Ostrowski, that looks at our accelerating culture through electronic performance and remixing of cinema. DuBois has lived for the last twenty-seven years in New York City. He is the research director of the programs in Integrated Design & Media at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, and a founding co- director of the NYU Ability Project. He is on the Board of Directors of the ISSUE Project Room and Eyebeam. His records are available on Caipirinha/Sire, Liquid Sky, C74, and Cantaloupe Music. His artwork is represented by bitforms gallery in New York City. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 23, 2016 CONTACT: Ren Mitchell 832-314-9994 [email protected] Karen Stokes Dance presents DEEP: Seaspace at Zilkha Hall, Hobby Center for Performing Arts HOUSTON, TX: Karen Stokes Dance presents “DEEP: Seaspace” October 20-22, 2016 at 8:00pm at the Hobby Center for Performing Arts, Zilkha Hall. “DEEP: Seaspace” is the culminating performance of a multi-year initiative inspired by the history and landmarks of the City of Houston. With an original score by composer Bill Ryan played live by nationally recognized musicians, the evening length live performance will explore Houston for two if its defining industries: sea and space. “DEEP: Seaspace” fuses history, landscape, dance, and music through the lens of two iconic Houston enterprises: The Houston Ship Channel and NASA. While Sea speaks to the pioneering spirit of the founding of Houston along the banks of Buffalo Bayou and the formation of the Houston Ship Channel, Space is inspired by Houston’s stronghold in space exploration and human achievement. Celebrating Houston's unique heritage and Texas’ pioneering spirit, “DEEP: Seaspace” investigates the core of human progress, the fundamental spirit of Houston, and the desire to understand the unknown to forge a better tomorrow. In “DEEP: Seaspace,” Stokes explores “launching” and “landing” through a unique blend of quirky and innovative choreographic styles that has become the trademark of her 20 years of work in contemporary dance. Stokes has received regional and national acclaim for her choreography including being name “Best Choreographer in Houston” in both 2014 and 2015 by the Houston Press. Nancy Wozny, of Texas Arts & Culture, wrote: “In Houston, it’s Karen Stokes who comes to mind as an artist tightly tied to Texas.

  • Mark II Sound Synthesizer
RCA Mark II Sound Synthesizer From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia RCA Mark II The RCA Mark II Sound Synthesizer (nicknamed Victor) was the first programmable electronic synthesizer and the flagship piece of equipment at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center. Designed by Herbert Belar and Harry Olson at RCA, it was installed at Columbia University in 1957. Consisting of a room-sized array of interconnected sound synthesis components, much of the design of the machine was contributed by Vladimir Ussachevsky and Peter Mauzey. The Mark II gave the user more flexibility and had twice the tone oscillators of its predecessor, the Mark I.[1] The synthesizer was funded with a large grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. Earlier 20th century electronic instruments such as the Telharmonium or the theremin were manually operated. The RCA combined diverse electronic sound generation with a music sequencer, which provided a huge attraction to composers of the day, many of whom were growing tired of creating electronic works by splicing together individual sounds recorded on sections of magnetic tape. The RCA Mark II featured a fully automated binary sequencer using a paper tape reader analogous to a player piano, that would send instructions to the synthesizer, automating playback of the machine.[2] The synthesizer would then output sound to a synchronized shellac record lathe next to the machine. [media 1] The resulting recording would then be compared against the punch-tape score, and the process would be repeated until the desired results were obtained. The sequencer features of the RCA were of particular attraction to modernist composers of the time, especially those interested in writing dodecaphonic music with a high degree of precision.

Absolutely Banal Hello. The Tuesday, March 06, 2007 Archives Excitement. The Glamour. The May his simulacra carry on . Impossibly Grand Adventures and Improbable Events of Everyone's Favorite Soundscape Provoking Critical Theorist. Sit Tight. Guestbook Obituary Wikipedia - David, 2:36 PM Thursday, December 21, 2006 I no longer blog here. Please visit http://www.myspace.com/lastnightsofparis Thanx. - David, 4:51 PM Wednesday, March 29, 2006 I know I've been posting a lot of music blogs lately, but, heck, listening to music is all I've been doing lately. My job here at the library demands that I page books from the storage facility in the morning and sit inside a cubicle for the rest of the day processing books for the online catalogue. What makes these rather monotonous tasks tolerable is listening to music on big ass headphones, which means I listen to about 40 hours of music a week at work, plus multiple hours in the car and all the uncounted hours at home. Then there's the long spans of time I spend composing my own tunes for deadphone and Last Nights of Paris. So, needless to say, music is on my mind a lot these days. Which is rad because not only have I been discovering all sorts of new musicians, but re-discovering stuff I haven't listened to in years, but which, at the time (and which I'm re-realizing in retrospect), affected my life in really deep and personal ways. The band this week which has reawaked all sorts of memories and emotional sensations is In the Woods.

Voted “Rhode Island's best dance company” in a Providence Phoenix 2011 Readers’ Poll, Lostwax has toured across the U.S., in Europe and Asia, and has regularly sold- out its Providence performances for FirstWorks. Zoologic launches in a three-day premiere run at RISD Auditorium on April 10, 11 at 8 p.m. and April 12 at 4 p.m., 2015. Tickets to the performance are on sale now for $15 in advance / $20 at the door and are available at first-works.org or 401-421- 4278. From 'panda cams' and electronic wildlife tagging to selfies, snapchat, and drones, Lostwax Multimedia Dance explores the ways in which technologies of communication and capture create more or less visible cages in contemporary life. Told through author Thalia Field's contemporary love story/environmental tragedy, we follow Tessela, a woman trapped in her own self-made cage, as she meets Heine Hediger, the Swiss specialist in animal behavior in zoos. The stories, both human and animal, provide a piercing look at fight, flight, and living life under surveillance. Zoologic was created by Lostwax Artistic Director Jamie Jewett, along with his long-term collaborator composer/media artist R. Luke DuBois, surveillance artist/scholar Elise Morrison and performers Shura Baryshnikov, Sydney Skybetter, Kathryn Mcnamara, and Ali Brodsky.

press release 333 east river road minneapolis, MN 55455 www.weisman.umn.edu july 23 2008 weisman art museum for immediate release WAM contact: christopher james 612-625-9685 [email protected] digital images available upon request (see last page of release) Weisman Art Museum exhibition Hindsight is Always 20/20 tests the metaphorical eyesight of America Exhibition dates: August 23, 2008–January 4, 2009 In the politically-charged atmosphere of the 2008 presidential election, the Weisman Art Museum presents Hindsight is Always 20/20, a solo exhibition featuring prints by artist R. Luke DuBois. The exhibition runs from Saturday, August 23, 2008 to Sunday, January 4, 2009 at the Weisman Art Museum. Hindsight is Always 20/20 replaces The Old, Weird America, the exhibition originally scheduled to run during this time period at the Weisman. DuBois’s 43 prints examine the history of American political discourse through the metaphor of vision. Drawing from the annual State of the Union (SOTU) addresses given by presidents to Congress, Hindsight presents each President’s SOTU addresses as a Snellen chart—the charts used by optometrists to test patients’ vision. Instead of the typical char- acters present in an eye chart, Hindsight employs words drawn from the SOTU addresses, presented in order of most frequent (top line) to least frequent (bottom line) word. The result is a startlingly clear snapshot of the lexicon of each presidency, containing a mix of historically topical keywords and rhetoric unique to each president and the time period in which he served. Another version of Hindsight is Always 20/20—where the Snellen charts are presented as light boxes instead of prints— will be exhibited at the Denver Performing Arts Complex during the Democratic National Convention in August.
