MAY 2021 MOTHERS To every mom out there, we want to say Happy JULIAN ESTATES STAFF Mother’s Day! Managers ABRAHAM MEJIA & LARISSA CASTILLO Lyrics to the “The Executive Chef MICHAEL WILSON Perfect Fan” It takes a lot to know what is love It’s not the big things, but the little things That can mean enough To all of our mothers with love A lot of prayers to get me through TRANSPORTATION And there is never a day that passes by I don’t think of you You were always there for me Monday, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.: Pushing me and guiding me Always to succeed Shopping and Errands Tuesday, Medical Appointments You showed me Wednesday, Outings When I was young just how to grow You showed me Thursday, Medical appointments Everything that I should know Friday, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.: Shopping and Errands You showed me Just how to walk without your hands ‘Cause mom you always were The perfect fan I want to thank you for that time And I’m proud to say you’re mine ‘Cause mom you always were, The perfect fan’ This is for all the young and aged mothers, working mothers and housewives, married mothers and the single mothers, those with money and without, and for those without whom life would have been insufferable. Wish you a very Happy Mother’s Day! Thank You, Nurses! As the largest group of health care workers, nurses provide care in jobs throughout our communities, with many of these women and men serving on the front lines. • Worldwide, there are 20 million nurses. Over 4 million nurses are on the job in the U.S. • The majority of registered nurses work in hospitals. The rest serve in long-term care facilities, at clinics and schools, and in other settings. • Every year, there’s a whole week dedicated to them. Celebrated May 6th-12th, National Nurses Week ends on the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. • A lamp symbolizes the nursing career. Nightingale was known as the “lady with the lamp,” since she carried one with her at night while checking on her patients. • The world’s first nursing school is said to have started in 250 B.C. in India. Only men could attend. • Today, women make up 90% of the field. • The first American to earn a diploma orf nursing was Linda Richards, who graduated in 1873 from a program in Boston. • There are over 100 different nursing specialties. • Nurses walk a lot! On average, a hospital nurse walks 4 to 5 miles during a 12-hour shift. • For the past two decades, nursing has been voted the most-trusted profession.

Things Are Happening at Julian Estates We have had quite a few changes here at Julian Estates, but the residents are not letting this slow them down. How fun it is to get together with new and old friends for a meal now that things are safer for everyone to sit four to a table in the dining room. Also, our building is bursting with new spring colors. If you have not seen the flowers out back, make a point to get out for a walk and enjoy their beautiful color and scents. We have a candid shot of one of our residents enjoying her time in the gardens. For you garden lovers, take a little time to get your hands dirty. We will be happy to enjoy the beauty you create. As things have been picking up, we have also had a chance to take a few bus trips. Gig Harbor and ice cream were among the trips, what a blast! Remember to check out the sign-up sheets each week for the bus rides. Fresh air and new scenery are always a great boost for your soul. As we move into May and towards the summer, let’s make this one of the best years Julian Estates has ever had. We have new Managers and a new Activity Coordinator who have lots of fresh ideas. Let’s get behind them and create a positive vibe in our community. Change can be hard, but change is essential to success. “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” Embrace an Optimistic Outlook Optimism is good for you! People who are optimists tend to be happier and healthier, says the research. Here are some ways you can make positivity a habit. Choose a motivational phrase — Whether a line from a favorite song, a meaningful quote, or a goal you want to achieve, turn to inspiring words when you need a pick-me-up. Spend time with upbeat people — We tend to act like those we’re surrounded by the most, so as much as possible, spend time with cheerful, kind people rather than folks who complain or gossip. Being around negative attitudes can cause you to take on a negative mindset. Assume the best — Give people the benefit of the doubt, and forgive them for their faults, even if they let you down. Do this for yourself, too! Focus on solutions —- When you encounter a problem, avoid playing the blame game or dwelling on how you could have done things differently. That doesn’t solve anything, and can make you and others feel worse. Instead, figure out how you can help right now. Practice gratitude — Before you go to bed, think about three good things that happened that day. Writing them down in a journal and reading through them later will remind you of things to be grateful for and boost your hopeful thinking. Older Americans Month 2021 When Older Americans Month was established in 1963, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday. About a third of older Americans lived in poverty and there were few programs to meet their needs. Interest in older Americans and their concerns was growing. A meeting in April 1963 between President John F. Kennedy and members of the National Council of Senior Citizens led to designating May as “Senior Citizens Month,” the prelude to “Older Americans Month.” Historically, Older Americans Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country, in particular those who defended our country. Every President since Kennedy has issued a formal proclamation during or before the month of May, asking that the entire nation pay tribute in some way to older persons in their communities. We are pleased to announce that the theme of Older Americans Month (OAM) 2021 is Communities of Strength. Older adults have built resilience and strength over their lives through successes, failures, joys, and difficulties. Their stories and contributions help to support and inspire others. In May, we will celebrate the strength of older adults and the Aging Network, with special emphasis on the power of connection and engagement in building strong communities. There are many things we all can do to nurture ourselves, reinforce our strength, and continue to thrive. Connecting with others is one of the most important — it plays a vital role in our health and well-being, and in that of our communities. From finding joy in small things and sharing our stories, to looking at the big picture and giving to others, we will promote the ways we are connected and strong. Seniors and Aging Adults You’ve heard it time and again: Physical activity and exercise are good for you, and you should aim to make them part of your routine. There are countless studies that prove the important health benefits associated with exercise, and it becomes more important as we age. Regular physical activity and exercise for seniors helps improve mental and physical health, both of which will help you maintain your independence as you age. Below, we outline five benefits of exercise for seniors and aging adults. Senior Exercise 1. Prevent Disease Studies have shown that maintaining regular physical activity can help prevent many common diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes. Exercise improves overall immune function, which is important for seniors as their immune systems are often compromised. Even light exercise, such as walking, can be a powerful tool for preventable disease management. 2. Improved Mental Health The mental health benefits of exercise are nearly endless. Exercise produces endorphins (the “feel good” hormone), which act as a stress reliever and leaves you feeling happy and satisfied. In addition, exercise has been linked to improving sleep, which is especially important for older adults who often suffer from insomnia and disrupted sleep patterns. 3. Decreased Risks of Falls Older adults are at a higher risk of falls, which can prove to be potentially disastrous for maintaining independence. Exercise improves strength and flexibility, which also help improve balance and coordination, reducing the risk of falls. Seniors take much longer to recover from falls, so anything that helps avoid them in the first place is critical. 4. Social Engagement Whether you join a walking group, go to group fitness classes or visit a gardening club, exercise can be made into a fun social event. Maintaining strong social ties is important for aging adults to feel a sense of purpose and avoid feelings of loneliness or depression. Above all, the key is to find a form of exercise you love, and it will never feel like a chore again. 5. Improved Cognitive Function Regular physical activity and fine-tuned motor skills benefit cognitive function. Countless studies suggest a lower risk of dementia for physically active individuals, regardless of when you begin a routine. In Conclusion Exercise is good for you; it’s just a matter of making it a priority and habit in your daily life. In the aging population, exercise has been shown to prevent disease, lower the risk of falls, improve mental health and well-being, strengthen social ties, and improve cognitive function. Regardless of your age, we hope this will motivate you to incorporate exercise into your life. The Case for Calcium No bones about it, calcium is an essential mineral that provides support for many of the body’s functions. About 99% of the calcium in the human body is in the bones and teeth. The nutrient is required to help bones grow when we’re children, and it keeps bones strong as we age. Older adults, especially women, have a higher risk of osteoporosis, which is a loss of bone density, so they need to get enough calcium to help protect their bones from weakness and breaking. Calcium also plays a major role in heart health. Muscles need calcium in order to contract, and the heart, the most important muscle, can’t beat without it! Additionally, calcium helps blood vessels circulate blood throughout the body, allows blood to clot properly, and helps maintain blood pressure. Calcium also affects how nerves function and the release of certain hormones. Because the body doesn’t make calcium, we need to get it from the food we eat to keep a steady supply. Foods with high levels of calcium include dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt; dark, leafy greens; salmon, sardines and shellfish; tofu; white beans; almonds; and sesame seeds. To absorb calcium, the body needs vitamin D, which comes from sunlight and some foods, including salmon, eggs and mushrooms. Gardening for Your Health The health benefits of gardening are well established and, with the coming of spring, the time has come to take advantage of what gardening has to offer! Below are just a few of the health benefits of gardening. Get some sun! Vitamin D is produced when the sun is absorbed through our skin. Among its many roles in important bodily functions, it strengthens bones and the immune system as well as reduces the risk for a number of Improve Your Memory! cancers.
