The entomopathogenic nematode (EPN), Heterorhabditis bacteriophora HBH, were used in place of chemical insecticides within the scope of biological control against the Turkestan cockroaches Blatta lateralis in this study. The hydrophilic fabric traps were set to provide the moist environment needed by the EPNs on aboveground. The fabrics inoculated with the nematodes at 50, 100 and 150 IJs/cm2 were used throughout the 37-day experiment. The first treatment was performed by adding 10 adult cockroaches immediately after the establishment of the traps. In the same way, the second treatment was applied after 15 days and the third treatment after 30 days. The mortality rates of cockroaches after 4 and 7 days of exposure to EPNs were determined for all treatments. Although Turkestan cockroaches were exposed to HBH 30 days after the setting of the traps, infection occurred.

Tarantulas and Social Spiders: A Tale of Sex and Silk by Jonathan Bull BSc (Hons) MSc ICL Thesis Presented to the Institute of Biology of The University of Nottingham in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Nottingham May 2012 DEDICATION To my parents… …because they both said to dedicate it to the other… I dedicate it to both ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First and foremost I would like to thank my supervisor Dr Sara Goodacre for her guidance and support. I am also hugely endebted to Dr Keith Spriggs who became my mentor in the field of RNA and without whom my understanding of the field would have been but a fraction of what it is now. Particular thanks go to Professor John Brookfield, an expert in the field of biological statistics and data retrieval. Likewise with Dr Susan Liddell for her proteomics assistance, a truly remarkable individual on par with Professor Brookfield in being able to simplify even the most complex techniques and analyses. Finally, I would really like to thank Janet Beccaloni for her time and resources at the Natural History Museum, London, permitting me access to the collections therein; ten years on and still a delight. Finally, amongst the greats, Alexander ‘Sasha’ Kondrashov… a true inspiration. I would also like to express my gratitude to those who, although may not have directly contributed, should not be forgotten due to their continued assistance and considerate nature: Dr Chris Wade (five straight hours of help was not uncommon!), Sue Buxton (direct to my bench creepy crawlies), Sheila Keeble (ventures and cleans where others dare not), Alice Young (read/checked my thesis and overcame her arachnophobia!) and all those in the Centre for Biomolecular Sciences.

MAHS Care Sheet Master List *By Eric Roscoe Care sheets are often an excellent starting point for learning more about the biology and husbandry of a given species, including their housing/enclosure requirements, temperament and handling, diet , and other aspects of care. MAHS itself has created many such care sheets for a wide range of reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates we believe to have straightforward care requirements, and thus make suitable family and beginner’s to intermediate level pets. Some species with much more complex, difficult to meet, or impracticable care requirements than what can be adequately explained in a one page care sheet may be multiple pages. We can also provide additional links, resources, and information on these species we feel are reliable and trustworthy if requested. If you would like to request a copy of a care sheet for any of the species listed below, or have a suggestion for an animal you don’t see on our list, contact us to let us know! Unfortunately, for liability reasons, MAHS is unable to create or publish care sheets for medically significant venomous species. This includes species in the families Crotilidae, Viperidae, and Elapidae, as well as the Helodermatidae (the Gila Monsters and Mexican Beaded Lizards) and some medically significant rear fanged Colubridae. Those that are serious about wishing to learn more about venomous reptile husbandry that cannot be adequately covered in one to three page care sheets should take the time to utilize all available resources by reading books and literature, consulting with, and working with an experienced and knowledgeable mentor in order to learn the ropes hands on.

  • Cockroaches Introduction Members of the Order Blattodea, There Are About 4,500 Species of Cockroach, Which Live in a Wide Range of Environments Around the World
The following sample is taken from Breeding Insects as Feeder Food published as both an ebook and in hardcopy on Amazon. The images have been removed from this sample but the formatting is retained. Cockroaches Introduction Members of the order Blattodea, there are about 4,500 species of cockroach, which live in a wide range of environments around the world. Although considered pests associated with disease, there are only about 30 species that are commonly found in proximity with humans and, of these, only four are considered serious pests. Cockroaches are mainly nocturnal and will normally try to avoid light. Although most species prefer warm climates, cockroaches are among the hardiest insects and can survive extremes at both end of the temperature scale. Some species are capable of remaining active for a month without food and are able to survive on very limited sustenance. They are omnivorous, feeding on organic materials, including decaying plant matter, but they will also eat dead insects and animals. Compared to crickets, cockroaches have some advantages as feeder insects. They are unlikely to attack a small chameleon in the same way that a cricket might. They are longer lived and are hardier. Most are easier to breed than crickets and they make no noise! Unfortunately, despite these advantages, they are not as readily accepted by some animals as crickets are. Cockroaches suffer from a perception they harbour disease and that they smell. The species shown below will not do so if kept in clean conditions and fed correctly. For mantis, cockroaches can be a better choice than crickets.

  • Araneae (Spider) Photos
Araneae (Spider) Photos Araneae (Spiders) About Information on: Spider Photos of Links to WWW Spiders Spiders of North America Relationships Spider Groups Spider Resources -- An Identification Manual About Spiders As in the other arachnid orders, appendage specialization is very important in the evolution of spiders. In spiders the five pairs of appendages of the prosoma (one of the two main body sections) that follow the chelicerae are the pedipalps followed by four pairs of walking legs. The pedipalps are modified to serve as mating organs by mature male spiders. These modifications are often very complicated and differences in their structure are important characteristics used by araneologists in the classification of spiders. Pedipalps in female spiders are structurally much simpler and are used for sensing, manipulating food and sometimes in locomotion. It is relatively easy to tell mature or nearly mature males from female spiders (at least in most groups) by looking at the pedipalps -- in females they look like functional but small legs while in males the ends tend to be enlarged, often greatly so. In young spiders these differences are not evident. There are also appendages on the opisthosoma (the rear body section, the one with no walking legs) the best known being the spinnerets. In the first spiders there were four pairs of spinnerets. Living spiders may have four e.g., (liphistiomorph spiders) or three pairs (e.g., mygalomorph and ecribellate araneomorphs) or three paris of spinnerets and a silk spinning plate called a cribellum (the earliest and many extant araneomorph spiders). Spinnerets' history as appendages is suggested in part by their being projections away from the opisthosoma and the fact that they may retain muscles for movement Much of the success of spiders traces directly to their extensive use of silk and poison.

[email protected] ABSTRACT Adult males of Eupalaestrus weijenberghi (Thorell 1894) live only for few months, while females live many years and continue molting and growing. Hence, there is a strong female-biased operational sex-ratio. While males move massively during the brief mating season, females are sedentary and remain inside their burrows, which are sometimes very close to each other. We tested if males are able to select females according to their body size and if selectivity of both sexes varies along the mating season. We exposed 5 males to 5 pairs of females of different sizes that occupied a burrow in each of two joined terraria. We performed two series of experiments: one at the beginning (March) and other at the end (May) of the mating season. Threesome combinations varied without repetitions, totalizing 25 trials on each series. We did not find differences in male behaviors: initial orientation, body vibration, palpal drumming and mating attempts regarding female size. We did not find differences in female behaviors as call or rejection. Courtship intensity was lower in May. This decrease could reflect male decadence and/or lower female receptivity. Unexpectedly, females preferred to lose their annual reproductive chance than mate with a poor quality male.

All streams period in June - July 2000, a study which was then contain roughly the same species, indicating that the continued by two interns from Aberdeen, so that the habitat itself is essentially homogenous. Knowledge total length of study was about 72 days.
