0 1 Genocides and Conflicts in the 20th and 21st Centuries Preface This book provides summaries of some of the mass atrocities that have occurred in the last hundred years. We have intentionally included conflicts that often are not studied in courses about genocide. We encourage readers to learn about these events for two reasons: first, when knowledge of these atrocities is not part of our shared history and memory, those who suffered, and their once- vibrant cultures and communities, are made invisible yet again. Second, it is important for us to realize the breadth of genocides across time and place. ‘Never again’ has come to mean ‘over and over again.’ Perhaps if we can recognize that genocide is a wide-ranging and repetitive scourge on the planet, we can someday reach a world without genocide. My central argument is that a close and comparative reading of the role of this cultural figure in the American context, anchored in three representative cases from Argentina—a dictatorship, Mexico—a nominal democracy, and Puerto Rico—a colonially-occupied and minoritized community within the United States, reveals that the liberal idealization of the subject of human rights relies upon the implicit pedagogical regulation of an educable subject of human rights. -

INTRODUCTION: LATIN AMERICAN STRUGGLE FOR DEMOCRACY The dreadful experiences endured in Latin America during the 1970's and 1980's evolved into a troubled transitional period before democracy began to consolidate. In those two decades, military rulers from all over the region displaced democratically elected governments through the use of force, and imprisoned, tortured and killed their opponents, including the baby-snatch- ing cases or trafficking with the newborn of murdered prison- ers.1 The term "desaparecido"was coined to name those who disappeared without a trace after being arrested by members of the security forces, burdening their relatives with the addi- tional anguish of not knowing the fate of their loved ones. -

Adopting a broad definition of “the testimonial world” to encompass fictional and documentary literature and film, the pages that follow focus on testimonial work in Latin America from 1969-1991. By exploring testimonial’s narrative qualities, historical relationship to ethnography and memoir, and attention to gender and ethnicity, this study considers the symbolic re-representation of violence in testimonial texts and the ethics (and the reader’s ethical position) they advocate, particularly in positioning the reader as responsible to an “other” who is a victim of violence. -

Gary Moore (born April 4, 1952 as Robert William Gary Moore in Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom; died February 6, 2011 in Malaga, Spain) is acknowledged as one of the finest guitarists to have originated in Ireland. In a career dating back to the 1960s he has played with bands including Thin Lizzy, Colosseum II, Greg Lake and Skid Row as well as having a successful solo career. Moore started performing from a young age and got his first good guitar at the age of 14. Moore started performing from a young age and got his first good guitar at the age of 14. In a career lasting over 30 years he has demonstrated that he is a fine musician, and his unique style of playing has adapted to very different music genres. He is considered one of the best guitarists to date. For blues fans, Moore's best recorded, live performance on video is "LIVE BLUES" recorded in a small night club in London and was released in 1992 on VHS. It is now available on DVD as well. "LIVE BLUES" also features two songs with B.B. King appearing on stage with Moore. "The Thrill Is Gone" on this recording is probably the best version of this, complete with More's Midnight Horns, female backup singers and dueling guitars. Many of Moore's standard songs are on this 90 minute show and were mixed better than most of the studio versions of the same tunes for a very rich and full sound. -
