When Catholics gather in Jesus’ name to celebrate the Eucharist, our first concern is sharing our gratitude, our faith, and our belief in Christ among us. However, in any gathering of people, the sharing of germs is inevitable. Concern over whether the sharing of the Cup at Holy Communion contributes to the spread of the flu and any other contagious disease is always a concern. Roman Catholics believe that both the Body and the Blood of Christ are contained fully in the Holy Eucharist under the form of either the Consecrated Host or the Precious Blood; that is, whether one receives only the Host or only the Precious Blood, one receives Jesus fully. If you are feeling sick or suspect that you might have been exposed to something contagious, please refrain from receiving Holy Communion from the Cup, and receive only the Sacred Host. Note it is never appropriate to dip your Host into the Cup, as this is irreverent and can contaminate the Precious Blood. Also, although holding hands to pray the “Our Father” can be a beautiful expression of people united in prayer, holding hands with your neighbor is not required. It is fitting to pray the Our Father with your hands folded in prayer. During the Sign of Peace, some may choose not to shake hands with you. An appropriate gesture for those who are concerned about spreading the flu virus might be to wave, a nod or to clasp your hands together and with a smile say “Peace be with you”. Should you attend Mass? The Obligation to attend Mass on Sunday and other Holy Days of Obligation is the ordinary expectation for Roman Catholics (Canon 1247). With extraordinary circumstances, such as sickness or severe weather, the faithful are excused from this obligation. In the midst of the cold and flu season, each of us has the responsibility of taking precautions to prevent the spread of these and other illnesses. Frequent hand-washing, covering of mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, and vigilance regarding habits and procedures for disease prevention in high risk areas should be common practice. www.stedna.org 3 This Week At St. Edna www.stedna.org/calendar This Week at St. Edna Upcoming Events Sunday, January 12 9:00am RCIA—Community Room 9:30am Liturgy of the Word for Children—Church, Hurley Center January 17, 2020 12:00pm Snack Theater Rehearsal—Lower Level Kairos Retreat 4:00pm Confirmation Class—Church 4:00pm SNL Rehearsal—Church February 2, 2020 Monday, January 13 WOSE Bake Sale 9:30am Prayer Shawl Ministry—Hurley Center 7:00pm Pastoral Council—Hurley Center February 8, 2020 7:30pm Outreach Ministry—Hurley Center Trivia Night Tuesday, January 14 8:30am Coffee with the Pastor—Community Room February 16, 2020 8:30am Grandparents Prayer Time—Hurley Center Wedding Anniversary Mass 9:15am Transformations—Hurley Center and Reception 5:30pm Religious Education—Doherty Center 6:30pm Snack Theater Rehearsal—Lower Level February 21, 2020 7:00pm Parish Life Commission—Hurley Center 7:00pm RCIA—Community Room Bingo 7:00pm Rosary—Church Wednesday, January 15 9:00am WOSE Spirituality—Doherty Center 4:30pm Options Ministry Team—Teen Center 7:00pm Young Adult Ministry Bible Study—Hurley Center 7:30pm Choir Practice—Church Thursday, January 16 6:00pm Children’s Choir Rehearsal—Church Bulletin Deadline 6:30pm Snack Theater Rehearsal—Lower Level Articles for the January 26, 2020 7:00pm WOSE Board Meeting—Hurley Center bulletin may be dropped off in the Parish Friday, January 17 Office or e-mailed to [email protected] no later than Tuesday, January 14, 2020 . • Bishop Barnes of San Bernardino Retires; Coadjutor Bishop Rojas Succeeds Him
Bishop Barnes of San Bernardino retires; Coadjutor Bishop Rojas succeeds him WASHINGTON (CNS) (Updated) — Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Bishop Gerald R. Barnes of San Bernardino, California, and Coadjutor Bishop Alberto Rojas immediately succeeds him. Bishop Barnes has headed the diocese since 1996. In June, he turned 75, the age at which canon law requires bishops to turn their resignation into the pope. Bishop Rojas had been an auxiliary bishop of the Chicago Archdiocese since 2011 when Pope Francis named him as coadjutor for San Bernardino Dec. 3, 2019. The Mexican-born bishop relocated to California’s Inland Empire diocese, as it’s known, in February. Bishop Barnes’ resignation was announced in Washington Dec. 28 by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States. Bishop Alberto Rojas. CNS In a Dec. 28 statement, Bishop Rojas said he would “like to build on the momentum that is clearly present” in the diocese and would not make any “big changes right away.” “There is no doubt, when looking at the events of this past year, that I am coming to lead the diocese at a very challenging time,” he said, but he added that he has already witnessed the strong and committed faith of the diocesan Catholics. He said in his years of ministry, in the seminary and as a priest and bishop in Chicago, he encountered many new challenges but he “always trusted in God’s plan for me to serve his church, and that he will give me all that I need to do his work.” Bishop Rojas was born Jan.

Office of the Archbishop Post Office Box 1979 Phone: (312) 534-8230 Chicago, Illinois 60690-1979 Fax: (312) 534-6379 “Same-sex Marriage:” What do Nature and Nature’s God say? Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: The Illinois General Assembly is being asked to consider a bill called “The Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act.” This is a deceptive title that ignores basic truths. Marriage comes to us from nature. The human species comes in two complementary sexes, male and female. Their sexual union is called marital. It not only creates a place of love for two adults but also a home for loving and raising their children. It provides the biological basis for personal identity. It is physically impossible for two men or two women to consummate a marriage, even when they share a deep friendship or love. Does this mean nature is cruel or that God is unfair? No, but it does mean that marriage is what nature tells us it is and that the State cannot change natural marriage. Civil laws that establish “same-sex marriage” create a legal fiction. The State has no power to create something that nature itself tells us is impossible. Neither did the Church create marriage. The Church asks if a man and woman proposing to marry are mature, responsible and free, willing to commit themselves to one another before the Lord in the presence of the community of the faithful to a lifelong relationship of fidelity to one another and openness to the creation and care for new life in their children.

  • St. Kieran Parish Notes from Fr
Notes from Fr. Tom St. Kieran Parish Next Thursday evening, a group of young men and women from our parish will be Confirmed. Bishop Alberto Rojas will anoint them with oil and assured them of the support and prayer of the Church as they allow the Spirit of God that is in them to move forth and touch the world of our future. From this point on, they will live their lives with a consciousness of how much they are trusted by God to do great and holy things with the gifts and talents that have been entrusted to them. Many of us older types never had this understanding of the true power of the Sacrament of Confirmation presented to us; but I think it is a valid and valuable way for all of us to look at ourselves and how the Holy Spirit still comes to us and through us to our world. Please pray for these young people - the future of our Church - and know that I will ask them to pray for all the people of this parish. • The Real Powers Behind President Barack Obama by Karen Hudes
The Real Powers Behind President Barack Obama By Karen Hudes Tuesday, December 31, 2013 8:02 (Before It's News) From Karen Hudes Facebook page: Barack Obama is truly not the President of the United States. He is not a powerful person at all. Rather, he is a front man for more powerful entities that hide in the shadows. The real power in the world is not the United States, Russia, or even China. It is Rome. The Roman Catholic Church (Vatican) is the single most powerful force in the world. However, the Vatican has been under the control of it’s largest all-male order, the Jesuits. The Jesuits were created in 1534 to serve as the “counter-reformation” — the arm of the Church that would help to fight the Muslims and the Protestant Reformers. However, they fought with espionage. The Jesuits were expelled from at least 83 countries and cities for subversion, espionage, treason, and other such things. Samuel Morse said that the Jesuits were the foot soldiers in the Holy Alliance (Europe and the Vatican) plan to destroy the United States (Congress of Vienna). Marquis Lafayette stated that the Jesuits were behind most of the wars in Europe, and that they would be the ones to take liberty from the United States. The head of the Jesuit Order is Adolfo Nicholas. His title is Superior General of the Jesuits. The use of the rank “general” is because the Jesuits are, in reality, a military organization. Nicholas, as the Jesuit General, is the most powerful man in the world.
