During Cold and Flu Season . . .

When Catholics gather in Jesus’ name to celebrate the Eucharist, our first concern is sharing our gratitude, our faith, and our belief in Christ among us. However, in any gathering of people, the sharing of germs is inevitable. Concern over whether the sharing of the Cup at Holy Communion contributes to the spread of the flu and any other contagious disease is always a concern. Roman Catholics believe that both the Body and the Blood of Christ are contained fully in the Holy Eucharist under the form of either the Consecrated Host or the Precious Blood; that is, whether one receives only the Host or only the Precious Blood, one receives Jesus fully. If you are feeling sick or suspect that you might have been exposed to something contagious, please refrain from receiving Holy Communion from the Cup, and receive only the Sacred Host. Note it is never appropriate to dip your Host into the Cup, as this is irreverent and can contaminate the Precious Blood. Also, although holding hands to pray the “Our Father” can be a beautiful expression of people united in prayer, holding hands with your neighbor is not required. It is fitting to pray the Our Father with your hands folded in prayer. During the Sign of Peace, some may choose not to shake hands with you. An appropriate gesture for those who are concerned about spreading the flu virus might be to wave, a nod or to clasp your hands together and with a smile say “Peace be with you”. Should you attend Mass? The Obligation to attend Mass on Sunday and other Holy Days of Obligation is the ordinary expectation for Roman Catholics (Canon 1247). With extraordinary circumstances, such as sickness or severe weather, the faithful are excused from this obligation. In the midst of the cold and flu season, each of us has the responsibility of taking precautions to prevent the spread of these and other illnesses. Frequent hand-washing, covering of mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, and vigilance regarding habits and procedures for disease prevention in high risk areas should be common practice.

10 January 12, 2020 Faith Formation Commission www.stedna.org/faithformation National Catholic Schools Week National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. Catholic Schools Week begins on the last Sunday in January. This year, Catholic Schools Week is Sunday, January 26 through Saturday, February 1. Schools typically observe the annual celebration week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our Church, our communities and our nation. The theme for National Catholic Schools Week 2020 is “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” The theme encompasses the core products and values that can be found in Catholic schools across the country. Not only are we teaching students to become future servant leaders, faith-filled disciples and enriched citizens in our communities, we, as educators, are growing with them. In Catholic schools, we are all learners, servants, and leaders. These shared qualities are what make Catholic schools work. They are what make Catholic schools succeed. For more information about Catholic Schools Week, visit the National Catholic Educational Association’s website.

Peace on Earth – In 2020 – Do We Really Want It?

The message of Christmas, Peace on Earth, has not been achieved in our time or for an extended time by any peoples or nations. We study the past so as to not repeat its’ mistakes; however, the world has not learned the lessons of Peace from History. Today we still find nations against nations, people against people, political party against political party, even religions against religions. We can’t seem to let peace happen.

History gives us horrific lessons on the cost of our failures to live in peace. For three hot days in July one hundred fifty years ago, 51,000 men died on the battlefield. When the fighting ended, the devastation and the thousands of dead and wounded soldiers left behind crippled the town of Gettysburg. Today, the United States remains stuck in Afghanistan, it’s longest war - 18 years, two trillion dollars, and thousand of lives changes forever.

Our nation’s budget priorities and the political climate gives little hope for a peaceful future. A massive $735 billion for defense and the establishment of a new armed service for space seems more like preparation for war rather than the promotion of peace. These budget priorities come with a cost to the vital programs that serve the poor such as: Cuts to Medicaid, and other Children’s Health Programs, Cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and School meals, Inadequate funding for Head Start and Child Care Services, Cuts to rental assistance, and cuts to Family Tax Credits.

What are our priorities? The Gospel and the Second Vatican Council give us clear guidelines. “Everyone must consider every neighbor, without exception, as another self, taking into account, first of all, his life and the means necessary to live it with dignity, so as not to imitate the rich man who had no concern for the poor man, Lazarus.” Perhaps our priorities need to be readjusted it we really want Peace on Earth.

Jesus told us to" love one another". He told us to care for the poor and feed the hungry. Join us next weekend. Bring a bag of food to restock the pantries at St. Edna and St. James. You can make a difference with your food donation each month. The next food collection is the weekend of January 19, 2020. PLEASE BRING A BAG OF FOOD WITH YOU WHEN YOU COME TO CHURCH. Also, please make a contribution to St James using the gold envelopes each month.

PLEASE BE GENEROUS. Don Kellen
