She was asked to assume a burden of tremendous responsibility. It had never been heard of before that a child could be born without a natural father. Mary was asked to accept this miraculous exception to the laws of nature. That required faith and trust in God and in his promises. Second, Mary was not yet married. Pregnancy outside of wedlock was not tolerated in those days. Mary was only espoused to Joseph, and such an engagement had to last for a whole year. She was asked to assume a great risk. She could have been rejected by Joseph, by her family, by all her own people. Mary knew that Joseph and her family would not understand without revelation from God. She nonetheless believed and trusted in God's promises. Joseph, a just and God-fearing man, did not wish to embarrass or punish his espoused wife, Mary when he discovered that she was pregnant.

JUNE 3, 2012 – TRINITY SUNDAY THE MARTYRS OF UGANDA Each year on June 3, the Episcopal Church commemorates the Martyrs of Uganda, the 32 men who were killed between 1885 and 1887 for failing to renounce Christianity – 12 of whom were burned to death on June 3, 1886. The Rev. Canon Petero Sabune, the Episcopal Church’s officer for Africa, explains: “In 1884 Mwanga the son of Mutesa, ascended to the throne of his father and demanded total obedience from his subjects. When Mwanga, who, like his father, had embraced Christianity, converted to Islam, he issued a decree stipulating that anyone caught reading the Bible would be executed. “A group of Catholics and Anglicans at the royal court of Buganda had started reading the Bible in preparation The Uganda Martyrs’ Shrine, in Namugongo, Uganda, built in 1973 for baptism before the decree went out. Afterward, the older members of the group continued to teach the younger ones in secret, and the church continued underground within the royal court and around the villages in Mengo, Rubaga, Kamapla, and Namugongo. • Homily: Simbang Gabi
Homily – Simbang Gabi Massi The Most Rev. José H. Gomez Archbishop of Los Angeles Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels Los Angeles, California December 15, 2011 My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I am honored to celebrate this Holy Mass with you, to begin these nine days of Simbang Gabi, as we get ready for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ on Christmas Day. This is a special day for all of us in the Church in Los Angeles, because we are celebrating the rich Catholic faith of our Filipino people, and your deep roots here in our Archdiocese and in our country, which date back to the first evangelization of America, when the first Filipinos arrived here at Morro Bay in 1587. My brothers and sisters, as you all know, your ancestors were here — worshipping, working, evangelizing, serving the needy, and building our country — almost 200 years before America’s founding fathers. We can never forget this, my brothers and sisters! Always be proud of your roots. Proud of where you come from. Proud of your Filipino history and heritage, your culture and customs. Your culture is a rich treasure and a beautiful part of who you are, a beautiful part of your Catholic identity, which you are called to live and to proclaim as a light in our society. This novena of Simbang Gabi, and all of your traditions of piety and devotion, reminds us that the seeds of the Gospel have been sown in every culture, and have produced fruits of holiness and love.

  • Hardship, and the Massive Disruption of Our Daily Lives. the Church Is No Stranger to Adversity, Suffering, Or Privation
Pastoral Letter to the Peoole of the Diocese of Las Veqas March 1.8,2020 My Dear Friends in Christ, People across the entire globe have been plunged into a world of hardship and uncertainty as the coronavirus continues to take its toll in every nation. As individuals and families, we are facing the specter of critical illness, cerlain economic hardship, and the massive disruption of our daily lives. The Church is no stranger to adversity, suffering, or privation. in times of difficulty, she has always raised her voice in prayer and earnest supplication, confident that God will hear our every prayer and answer all our pleas. Down through the centuries, the Blessed Mother has played a vitally important role in times of trial, coming to us as a tender Mother, a tireless advocate, steadfast Intercessor, and cherished friend, She has visited her people under the familiar titles of Virgin of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Antipolo, and Our Lady of La Vang. She is beloved in Poland as Our Lady of Czestochowa, in Ireland as Our Lady of Knock, and in Japan as Our Lady of Akita. Mary is revered by the people in Bosnia-Herzegovina as Our Lady of Medugorje, and in Spain, she is treasured as Our Lady of the Pillar. Mary is known in France as Our Lady of Lourdes, and in Portugal as Our Lady of Fatima. On May L3, 1846, the Bishops of the United States unanimously chose the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Patroness of our Nation. Their decision was ratified by Pope Pius IX on February 7 of the following year, Now is the hour to turn to our Blessed Mother for her maternal help.
