Google Map: http://goo.gl/maps/P3kSf Directions from Ladybrand (17km): • From the main street in town turn right into Voortrekker street and head in a westerly direction out of town onto a dirt road. Follow the road over the mountain for about 12km. • About 12km from town keep right at the fork to follow the S-620. • Cross over the railway line at Hoogfontein and after 5.5km turn left at the sign to Vastrap Farm. Directions from Clocolan (47.5km) • Take the R26 towards Ladybrand. • Turn right to Modderpoort (10km before Ladybrand). • At Modderpoort silo turn right to Marseilles onto dirt road. • After 9km turn right at T-junction. • After 400m keep right to follow the S-620. • Cross over the railway line at Hoogfontein and after 5.5km turn left at the sign to Vastrap Farm. Directions from Bloemfontein (122km): • From the N1 take the Nelson Mandela/Zastron turn off. • Take N8 towards Ladybrand past the airport. • Pass Botshabelo, Thaba Nchu, Tweespruit and Westminster. • Turn left to Marseilles (20km before Ladybrand). • Turn left at T-junction (away from silos). Cross over railway line onto dirt road. • After 5km turn right at sign to “Assisi Mission”. • After 2.5km turn right at T-junction. 1 • After 3.8km turn right at the sign to Vastrap Farm. Directions from Aliwal North (200km): • From Aliwal travel towards Rouxville/Bloemfontein. • On the far end of Rouxville turn off the N6 towards Zastron and carry on past Zastron to Wepener. • About 8km past Wepener turn right off the main road to Hobhouse just after crossing the Caledon River. • 40km after Hobhouse turn left at the T-junction towards Bloemfontein on the N8 (not towards Ladybrand). • After 8km turn right onto the first tar road to Marseilles. • Turn left at T-junction (away from silos). Cross over railway line onto dirt road. • After 5km turn right at sign to “Assisi” • After 2.5km turn right at T-junction • After 3.8km turn right at the sign to Vastrap Farm Directions from Kroonstad (200km): QUICKEST WAY FROM JOBURG • (There are major road works on the road to Steynsrus so we advise taking the route via Ventersburg and Senekal) • Drive on the N1 South towards Ventersburg. • Just before Ventersburg take the first exit off the highway towards Senekal. • After about 59km cross over the T-junction with the N5 and travel towards Marquard. • After 45km turn LEFT at the T-junction towards Clocolan. • Drive 45km past the town of Clocolan then turn RIGHT towards Ladybrand. • Measure exactly 25km and turn RIGHT at the sign to Modderpoort. • At Modderpoort silo turn right to Marseilles onto dirt road • After 9km turn right at T-junction. • After 400m keep right to follow the S-620 • Cross over the railway line at Hoogfontein and after 5.5km turn left at the sign to Vastrap Farm. 2 .

    3 JUNE 2013 FIRST PHASE ARCHAEOLOGICAL & HERITAGE ASSESSMENT OF THE PROPOSED REALIGNMENT OF THE N8 NATIONAL ROAD BETWEEN THE R26/N8 INTERSECTION & MASERU BRIDGE BORDER POST, LADYBRAND, FREE STATE EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The N8 national road provides a vital link between Lesotho and South Africa. To improve the road connection, the South African National Road Agency LTD, is planning the realignment of a section of the N8 Ladybrand and the Maseru Bridge Border Post. The realignment will start from the existing N8/R26 intersection and will follow the S836 gravel road to tie in along the N8 between Ladybrand and the Maseru Bridge. The length of the realignment is approximately 13 kilometres. The whole region is part of intensive agricultural land, which has been cultivated for decades. Scars left by road building are also visible. No archaeological, cultural or any historical remains were found along the route. It is clear that the new developments will have no impact on any cultural heritage and historical remains in the area. Further planning of the proposed project may continue, and no mitigation measures will be needed. INTRODUCTION & DESCRIPTION Enviroworks Environmental Consultants from Bloemfontein had been commissioned by the National Roads Agency to compile the Environmental Impact Assessment for the proposed developments. 2 A list of the names and particulars of effected farm owners is enclosed herewith (See ANNEXURE 1). Scope and Limitations SANRAL is planning the realignment of a section of the N8 between the N8/R26 intersection near Ladybrand and the Maseru Bridge Border Post. The relocation of the road will start from the existing N8/R26 intersection and will follow the S836 gravel road to link-up with the N8 between Ladybrand and the Maseru Bridge.
