3 2010 MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY • MEN’S SOCCER MARAU DER PRI DE Millersville University was founded in 1855—then known as Lancaster Normal School. In 1889, Millersville started playing intercollegiate athletics, beginning a tradition of excellence and pride that is entering its 121st year. Since the first team took the field, the athletics department has grown into 22 teams competing at the NCAA Division I and II levels. Few universities can match the longstanding success that Millersville’s athletics programs have enjoyed. Since joining the PSAC, the Marauders have compiled 42 team PSAC Championships in 13 different sports. The fan base and student-support of the Marauders is unrivaled among its peers. Packed venues are common, especially in Pucillo Gymnasium during season, when the “Pucillo Posse”—a rowdy cheering section—helps the teams to victory. The students support all sports at Millersville. In 2008, the men’s soccer program ranked 12th in the nation in home attendance. The spirit was no more evident than in late November when nearly 1,000 fans attended the team’s NCAA Tournament contest despite the freezing temperatures. Another key part of the tradition is Millersville’s mascots, the Marauder, and Skully. The Marauder’s origin dates back to the 1930s. He received a partner at Homecoming in 2004 in Skully. Skully has become a favorite among patrons with his eye patch, an earring, size 13 boots and enthusiasm for Millersville sports.

16 Season Outlook 2010 MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY • MEN’S SOCCER SEASON OUTLOOK VIDEO How does a team that sat atop the Division II national poll for the first time in school history and set program records for fewest goals allowed, lowest goals against average and most shutouts build on an outstanding 2009 campaign? That question is not hard to answer for fourth-year head coach Steve Widdowson. “This is the first class that I’ve been able to see all the way through and for all we’ve accomplished together, there’s still a missing piece that we all want.” The piece Widdowson refers to is the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship. The Sheffield, England, native has commandeered his Marauders to the conference title game in each of the last two seasons, but the hardware they seek has eluded them in the unkindest of ways.

To finally reach the summit in what is shaping up to be an exciting and interesting 2010 season, the Millersville men’s soccer team will rely on contributions from 14 experienced returnees and a slew of newcomers as they look to stay at the top of the pack in the newly reconfigured PSAC.

Millersville also returns Dan Prian, Aaron Roland and Todd Grimm up front. Prian has put together consecutive 10-point seasons to start his career and is a player that Widdowson wants to see more from in 2010.

“Prian’s a very dangerous player, and on his day he can be as good as anyone on the field. We’re still trying to find a spot where we can maximize his potential, but certainly we hope to have him contribute to our offense in a number of ways.” Entering his junior season, Prian has seven career goals to his credit, including three game-winners.

GOALKEEPER Matt Langione doesn’t have to prove anything to those who follow Millersville men’s soccer. He’s the winningest keeper in school history and holds single-season records for fewest goals allowed (12) and lowest goals against average (0.68)— both of which he set in 2009.

The way last season ended had to leave a sour taste in the keeper’s mouth, though, as he was red-carded in the PSAC Championship for a handball outside the box and missed the final 60 minutes of that match, plus the Marauders’ NCAA Tournament game against Charleston.

“It’s a big year for Matt,” said Widdowson. “He’s a record-breaking goalkeeper and a captain, and I know he wants to get back in here and lead this team. It’s his fourth year now and all of the seniors honestly know what’s missing from our résumé as a team.”

The non-conference schedule features matches against Wilmington (Del.) on Sept. 15 and West Virginia Wesleyan on Oct. 9. Both schools have been a part of Millers- ville’s schedule the last few seasons and both have shown to be tough opponents. Wilmington upset the Marauders in Delaware last season when MU was ranked No. 3 in the country. There are a handful of new teams making trips to Millersville this season in Shepherd (Sept. 5), C.W. Post (Sept. 18), University of the District of Columbia (Oct. 19) and Holy Family (Oct. 27).

As important as the non-conference slate is, the PSAC is where the Marauders will have to make their mark yet again. Home games with Lock Haven, Bloomsburg, California (Pa.) and West Chester highlight the home portion of the conference lineup, but difficulty lies ahead on the road. Millersville must travel to Slippery Rock, East Stroudsburg and Shippensburg. Conference road play concludes with a back-to-back weekend against Gannon and Mercyhurst on Oct. 22 and 23.

“It’s certainly going to be a more difficult road,” explained Widdowson. “Playing everybody once is tough and we have some very challenging road games. We’ve seen over the past few years that anyone can beat anyone out in the West and we’ve got to be ready for every single game.”

Widdowson also noted that depth is going to play a big part in what happens in the conference race. “You’ve got to have depth, you’ve got to have strength, and you’ve got to be able to cover injuries. It could turn out to be a battle of attrition,” he said.

While there are certainly challenges with the single division format, the Marauder Matt Langione manager also believes it adds some excitement.” You control your own destiny and Career Wins Leader can guarantee postseason home games if you take care of your own business and I Most shutouts in a single-season like that,” said Widdowson. ous. He led the PSAC in goals against average (0.68), shutouts (11) and shutouts per game (0.58). He ranked sixth in the conference in save percentage (.769), and ninth in saves (40). Langione also placed 12th amongst NCAA Division II goalkeepers in goals against average. His 11 shutouts are the second most in a single-season all-time in PSAC history and he earned 12-straight wins from Sept. 19 to Nov. 4. Twice he was named PSAC East Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week and at the end of the year he was a Daktronics NCAA Division II Atlantic Region First Team selection.

When Langione was unavailable last season, Widdowson turned to Kurt Pleier. Pleier made four saves in the PSAC Championship against Slippery Rock and drew his first ca- reer start in the NCAA Tournament. The Marauders also have the option of turning to senior Lucas Stacey, while Brad Benzing and Shayne Fitzwater—a pair of freshmen— vie for roster spots and a shot at future goalkeeping duties. SCHEDULE The PSAC takes on a different, yet familiar, look in 2010. Starting in 2008, the confer- ence operated under an East-West, two-division format, where a team played each divisional opponent twice. This fall the conference returns to a single-division format and every game against a PSAC opponent counts towards the conference record. It’s an unfortunate circumstance for Millersville, as it feasted on Eastern Division rivals to the tune of an 18-0 record over the last two seasons.

A hot start is vital for the Marauders, with five of their first six games being played at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium. Two of those are PSAC match-ups, including a Sept. 11 match against Lock Haven where Millersville will celebrate the program’s 50 years of existence. The only away game in the first six is a tough one, as defending PSAC Champion Slippery Rock awaits the Black and Gold. The Rock are under new leadership this season, but the game will be an earlier barometer of where each team John Claffey stands. 2008 All-PSAC East First Team

Biemesderfer Stadium, which has served as home to the Marauders since 1970, underwent a dynamic transformation in 2005.

An all-purpose synthetic surface field (Field- Turf) was installed. New visitors bleachers were added, a new scoreboard was placed in the endzone, an eight-lane running track was refinished and locker rooms were refurbished.

Athletic facility renovations were made pos- sible by a gift from Dana Chryst ’81 and The Jay Group in honor of J. Freeland Chryst ’50. Chryst Field was officially dedicated on Oct. 8, 2005.

CARPENTER-TROUT ATHLETIC TRAINING FACILITY

The Carpenter-Trout Athletic Training Facil- ity, a stand-alone athletics training facility at Biemesderfer Stadium, opened in the fall of 2006. The facility was built as part of a $2 million makeover.

The 5,000 square-foot training center is open for use by all of Millersville’s intercol- legiate teams. The facility is an integral part of the physical development of all the Millersville student-athletes.
