The research indeed mentioned that there are possibilities of cultivating this crop in the country but only when night frost has to be controlled. A task was assigned by PPO Fruit to master students of Wageningen University to research on the suitability of nuts cultivation in the Netherlands. Cultivation of walnut and hazelnut in the Netherlands offers advantages and disadvantages current and future growers. This study has researched the agronomical, economic, social and sustainable side of walnut and hazelnut production, to limit risks and increase opportunities. From an agronomical perspective hazelnuts do seem to be a crop with high opportunities and low risks, due to their endemic occurrence in the Netherlands. This research pointed that, selection of cultivars that prosper in one part of the Netherlands might not do so in another, as rainfall, groundwater levels, soil composition or periods with frost differ. Moreover, biotic and abiotic stresses like pests, diseases and night frost were detected as constraining factors in current and future production systems. From ans economic point of view, the global market of walnut and hazelnuts is a risk. However, local markets offer opportunities for both products. Social aspects identified freshness of products, local-for-local, health and sustainable nuts production as opportunities from this industry. Risks are identified as increasing allergic reaction to tree nuts and weight gain. A sustainable nut production is expected to increase viability and profitability to both current and future growers. Six species of Juglans, introduced into forests and parks of Kyiv, were studied, namely, J. ailantifolia Carrière, J. cinerea L., J. mandshurica Maxim., J. nigra L., J. regia L., and J. subcordiformis Dode, cultivar J. regia var. maxima DC. ′Dessert′ and four probable hybrids (♀J. subcordiformis × ♂J. ailantifolia; ♀J. nigra × ♂J. mandshurica; ♀J. cinerea × ♂J. regia and ♀J. regia × ♂J. mandshurica). Due to the targeted introduction of different duration, the invasive species are at the beginning stage of forming their populations, sometimes amounting to naturalization. The species-wise specificity of introduced representatives of different ages (from one-year-old seedlings to generative trees), belonging to the genus Juglans, was determined. J. regia and J. nigra are the richest in the content of secondary metabolites; J. cinerea and J. mandshurica have a medium level, and J. ailantifolia and J. subcordiformis-a low level. Butternut is a medium-sized tree with alternate, pinnately compound leaves that bears large, sharply ridged and corrugated, elongated, cylindrical nuts born inside sticky green hulls that earned it the nickname lemon-nut (Rink, 1990). The nuts are a preferred food of squirrels and other wildlife. Butternuts were collected and eaten by Native Americans (Waugh, 1916; Hamel and Chiltoskey, 1975) and early settlers, who also valued butternut for its workable, medium brown-colored wood (Kellogg, 1919), and as a source of medicine (Johnson, 1884), dyes (Hamel and Chiltoskey, 1975), and sap sugar. Butternut’s native range extends over the entire north- eastern quarter of the United States, including many states immediately west of the Mississippi River, and into Canada. Butternut is more cold-tolerant than black walnut, and it grows as far north as the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, New Brunswick, southern Quebec, and Figure 1.

The agreed major aims were to provide an overview of current modelling approaches and their strengths and weaknesses for risk assessment, and to develop and test a system for risk assessors to select appropriate models for application. First, we conducted an extensive literature review, based on protocols developed for systematic reviews. The review located 468 models for plant pest spread and dispersal and these were entered into a searchable and secure Electronic Model Inventory database. A cluster analysis on how these models were formulated allowed us to identify eight distinct major modelling strategies that were differentiated by the types of pests they were used for and the ways in which they were parameterised and analysed. These strategies varied in their strengths and weaknesses, meaning that no single approach was the most useful for all elements of risk assessment. Therefore we developed a Decision Support Scheme (DSS) to guide model selection. The DSS identifies the most appropriate strategies by weighing up the goals of risk assessment and constraints imposed by lack of data or expertise. Searching and filtering the Electronic Model Inventory then allows the assessor to locate specific models within those strategies that can be applied.

' collecting of the insects was done mainly by sweeping the herbs, shrubs, and lower tree strata with a thirty-centimeter insect net. other insects were taken after direct observation. In addi- tion, night collecting was done by using automobile headlights as attractants from various locations on logging roads throughout each area. An attempt was ends to collect as many insects as possible from each woodlot. Due to the nunbers involved and the fact that the surveys did not cover an entire year, the insects collected represent only a sample of the woodlot insect commities. Of the animals collected, only adult or identifiable imature forms of insects were recorded.

Ağaçlarında Bulunan Eriophyid Akarlar ve Predatörleri(1) Evsel DENİZHAN(1) Sultan ÇOBANOĞLU(2) Öz: Eriophyidae familyasına ait akarlar sebze, meyve ve süs bitkilerinin önemli zararlı gruplarından birini oluşturmaktadır. Büyük çoğunluğunun konukçularına özelleşmiştir. Çok küçük olmaları (0.1–0.3 mm) nedeniyle bunlar üzerindeki sistematik ve biyolojik çalışmalar oldukça zor olmaktadır. Gal yapan türleri yanında daha çok serbest yaşayan türleri bulunmaktadır. Türkiye Eriophyidae faunası çok az bilinmektedir. Oysa Türkiye’nin coğrafi konumu ve botanik geçmişi bu bölgeyi bilhassa geniş sınırlı türler için ilginç kılmaktadır. Bu nedenle, Türkiye’nin Eriophyidae familyası akarları üzerinde kapsamlı bir inceleme oldukça gereklidir. Bu çalışma Ankara merkez ilçelerinde 2005–2006 yılları arasında ceviz ağaçları üzerindeki Eriophyidae akarları ve predatörlerini tespit etmek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Ankara ilinde Juglans regia L. üzerinde tespit edilen zararlı akar türleri Aceria avanensis Bagdasarian, 1970 ve Aceria erinea Nalepa, 1891 dir. Aceria avanensis Türkiye için yeni kayıt niteliğinde olduğu ortaya konulmuştur. Predatör akarlardan Phytoseiidae familyasından Euseius finlandicus Oudemans ve Zetzellia mali Ewing (Acari) zararlı akarın oluşturduğu galler içerisinde saptanmıştır. Systematic and biological studies on these mites difficult due to their specification to host plant and their smallness dimensions between 0.1-0.3 mm.
