Sanskar Gurukul Weekly Update Class Name: Kanwa Week# 25: April 13, 2014 General Assembly We started the GA with three Omkars, followed by the Shanti Mantra . Aparna Aunty taught the children how to do Ujjayi Pranayama. It is a breathing technique used for relaxing your mind. You breathe in and out through the back of the throat thereby making a hissing sound. Apr 15th is Hanuman Jayanti. As we all know Shri Hanuman was the biggest devotee of Lord Rama. When he went to see Sita Devi in Lanka, he made himself very small. What this teaches us is that in front of our parents and elders we have to be "small", i.e. set our ego aside - no matter how successful we might be. Sita Mata saw his humility and granted him "Ashta Siddhi Nava Nidhi". The 8 Siddhis are 8 qualities / abilities - for example, the ability to increase or decrease in size, increase or decrease one's weight etc.. The 9 Nidhis are 9 types of wealth - example, food, jewelry, children etc.. But Hanumanji did not want any of that. All he wanted was to serve Lord Rama. This shows his greatness. We then chanted the Hanuman Chalisa. Class We started the class with 3 Omkars, and Shanti mantra. Discover India Module 6 A: Rajputs The word Rajput is derived from Sanskrit Rajputra which means sons of King. The Rajputs are the descendants of Hindu warrior class (Kshatriya varna). The Rajputs were the vanguard of Hindu India in the face of Islamic onslaught. There were many brave kings who gave their life to stop the incoming invasions. We covered following kings in detail in our class. Bappa Rawal: One of the most powerful and famous rulers of Mewar Dynasty. In 8th century, there were lots of invasions from Arabs in North western part of India. He united smaller states to ward off the incoming Muslim invasions. Defeated Arabs and added Middle East kingdoms to his rule. Pruthviraj Chouhan: He ruled over Ajmer and Delhi. Pruthviraj succeeded to throne at the age of 20. He controlled much of today’s Rajasthan and Haryana. Chauhan defeated Shahabuddin Muhammad Ghori and captured him in the First Battle of Tarain in 1191. Ghori begged for mercy and was release. Ghori attacked for the second time Sanskar Academy 1 Sanskar Gurukul Weekly Update the following year and defeated Chouhan and captured him. He tortured and executed Chouhan. Maharana Pratap: Gallantry and a love for freedom was in Rana's blood as he was the grandson of Rana Sangha and the son of Udai Singh. At a time when all the Rajput states were making ally with Akbar, Mewar remained independent. This made Akbar furious. He attacked Mewar in Rajasthan and captured the fort of Chittor. Udai Singh fled to the hills but chose to remain independent even without his kingdom. After his death Pratap took up the responsibility and the people found a true leader in him. Self- respect and virtuous behavior were the main qualities of Pratap Singh. In the Battle of Haldighati, even though Mughal soldiers outnumbered Pratap’s men they fought valiantly to resist the Mughals. Pratap faced extreme hardship living the life of a fugitive but never gave up his struggle for freedom. With the help of his trusted men like Bhamashah he fought back and recovered most of his territories. Although he could not recapture Chittor, he died a hero to his people. Forts and Palaces of Rajasthan: Chittorgarh Fort: Seated on a 180 meter hill Chittorgarh covers an expanse of 700 acres and it represents the pride, romance and spirit of the people of Chittor. Historically, it is considered that Chittor was built by the Mauryan dynasty. Chittorgarh is also associated with Mirabai. It is often called as ‘Bhakti aur Shakti ki nagari’ (City of devotion and strength) Kumbhalgarh Fort: Located in Aravali hills in Udaipur. Kumbhalgarh is a Mewar fortress built during the course of the 15th century by Rana Kumbha. Kumbhalgarh is also the birthplace of Maharana Pratap, the great king and warrior of Mewar. It is the most important fort in Mewar after Chittorgarh. Its wall is the second largest wall in Asia. The fort remained impregnable to direct assault, and fell only once, due to a shortage of drinking water, to the combined forces of Mughal Emperor Akbar, Raja Man Singh of Amber, Raja Udai Singh of Marwar, and the Sultan of Gujarat. We also covered various palaces in Rajastahan including Hawa Mahal Palace, Jaipur (Palace of Winds), City Palace, Udaipur and Umaid Bhavan Palace, Jodhpur.
