Code of Conduct for Members of the Toyger Cat Club Code of Conduct for Members of the Toyger Cat Club 1. Members undertake to house, feed and care for all their cats and kittens in a way that fully meets their welfare needs and in accordance with the GCCF Code of Conduct. 2. Members undertake to breed from studs and queens that comply with the breed standard, are healthy, and registered on the GCCF Active Register. Breeding cats should not exhibit any veterinary defect as listed in the preface to the GCCF Standard of Points nor exhibit any obvious hereditary defects. 3. Members must make prospective buyers aware of any veterinary defect or other abnormality exhibited by kittens prior to sale. Details of all such conditions must be disclosed to purchasers of affected kittens and recorded in writing in the sale agreement. 4. Members must not allow kittens to go to their new homes until at least one week after the second vaccination. Ie 12 – 13 weeks. All such kittens will be fully inoculated against feline panleukopenia and cat “flu”(Feline calicivirus, feline herpes virus), free of internal and external parasites and in good health. All pet kittens must be registered on the GCCF non-active register* and neutered prior to sale. All kittens sold for breeding must comply with the breed standard, be registered on the GCCF Active Register* and only sold to purchasers who: (a.) Undertake in writing to comply with the GCCF Code of Conduct* as regards their future breeding activities and (b.) Neuter all kittens placed on the non-active register prior to sale. *Or equivalent register/code with another recognised regulatory body. Breeder members must make every effort to mentor novice breeders to whom they have sold kitten/s on the active register. 5. Members must take care to sell cats or kittens to suitable homes where their welfare needs will be fully met and undertake that no cat or kitten will be knowingly sold to pet shops, other traders or for unauthorised breeding. Early neutering prior to sale is obligatory as the only certain way to prevent the latter. 6. Members undertake to give guidance to the owners of a new kitten and undertake to help with rehoming if the owners circumstances change. Breeders must take responsibility for the care of any Toyger they have bred if the owner is no longer able or willing to do so. All kitten contracts must include a clause stating the the breeder has the right to take the kitten/cat back if the owner is no longer able to care for it and requiring the owner to contact the breeder in these circumstances. 7. Members must only sell kittens that are fit for purpose ie they must not sell kittens for showing or breeding when it is apparent at the time of sale that the kitten does not have showing or breeding potential. 8. Breeder members wishing to outcross any Toyger must contact the committee for advice beforehand and inform the committee in writing of details (ie breed and sex) of outcross cats used to the committee on request. 8. There are several concerns on the possible negative effects on PPG including anaesthesia, surgery and complications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of PPG. Microsoft excel was used for statistical analysis. The information about 6646 purebred kittens who had gone through PPG before 27 weeks of age was obtained from the online retrospective survey. Database included cats from the different breeds and –age groups when the surgery was performed, collected in 2019.

  • Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency (Pkdef) in Cats
Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency About the disease Pyruvate kinase deficiency is an inherited disease of Abyssinian and Somali cats. Pyruvate kinase is a red blood cell enzyme important in red blood cell energy metabolism. Therefore, if this enzyme is lacking, a haemolytic anaemia can result. However, the anaemia may only be mild and intermittently detectable, or may not become evident until the cat is older. A rapid severe life-threatening anaemia can also develop. The disease is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait, so only cats with two copies of the defective gene are affected. Carrier cats are clinically healthy but can pass the defective gene to their offspring. About the test The Molecular Diagnostic Unit offers a genetic test to diagnose autosomal-recessive pyruvate kinase deficiency (PKDef) in cats. This genetic test is a PCR-based pyrosequencing assay that can reliably distinguish between Affected, Carrier and Normal cats. It is highly recommended that all Abyssinian and Somali cats used for breeding are tested for the defective gene, as well as cats of these breeds showing signs of haemolytic anaemia. For Somali cats, testing for PKDef is now compulsory if cats are to be registered on the GCCF (Governing Council of the Cat Fancy) active register and used for breeding. Please note: The test detects the Normal and Mutant PKDef genes found in domestic cats. The test also works in Bengal and Savannah cats, and detects the Asian Leopard Cat or Serval gene if present (i.e. in F1/F2 cats). There is no point in testing Asian Leopard Cats and Servals for PKDef since the mutant gene came from the domestic cat population.

  • Classification and Liability for Owners of Wild-Domestic Animal Hybrids
WALKING ON THE WILD SIDE: CLASSIFICATION AND LIABILITY FOR OWNERS OF WILD-DOMESTIC ANIMAL HYBRIDS INTRODUCTION Man has long been diversely fascinated with animals. We keep them in zoos to admire their strength and rugged wild beauty. We domesticate them to become our companions and servants. We hunt them for sport and create laws, foundations, and funds to protect them from extinction. We study them in the wild, and in laboratories, to gain insight into their behavior, and our own. For better or for worse, the human race has taken an active and inextricable role in the natural animal kingdom. One of the latest trends in this relationship has been the drive to make our domestic companions more closely resemble their wild relatives.' Since the domestication of dogs nearly 10,000 years ago,2 man has en gaged in selective breeding of his domesticated animals to enhance and emphasize the traits he desired, ultimately resulting in different accepted breeds within the species.' Now, numerous breeders are engaged in the cross-breeding of domestic animals with their wild relatives.4 In the case of dogs and cats, this is primarily to appeal to those buyers desiring to own an exotic pet by creating the appearance of a wild animal.s 1 See Richard H.
