    OVERLOON: THE FORGOTTEN BATTLE DATE: SEPTEMBER 40 – OCOTOBER 18 1944 Belligerents United Kingdom Germany United States The Battle of Overloon was a battle fought between Allied forces and the German Army which took place in and around the village of Overloon in the south-east of the Netherlands between 30 September and 18 October 1944. The battle, which resulted in an Allied victory, ensued after the Allies launched Operation Aintree. The Allies went on to liberate the town of Venray. In September 1944, the Allies had launched Operation Market Garden, a major offensive from the Dutch-Belgian border across the south of the Netherlands through Eindhoven and Nijmegen toward the Rhine bridge at Arnhem, with the goal of crossing the Rhine and bypassing the Siegfried Line in preparation for the final drive toward Berlin. Allied airborne troops were defeated at the Rhine bridge in Arnhem and the advance stopped south of the Lower Rhine, resulting in a narrow salient that ran from the north of Belgium across the south-east of the Netherlands. German forces attacked this salient from a bridgehead west of the bend in the river Meuse (known as Maas in Dutch and German) near the city of Venlo. The bridgehead was established by retreating German forces who were reinforced with troops arriving from nearby Germany by crossing the Meuse in Venlo. The western edge of this bridgehead ran through the Peel, a region with bogs and several canals blocking an Allied advance. The Allies decided to attack the bridgehead from the north, and this meant they had to capture Overloon and Venray, which were on the road toward Venlo.

    ‘Binnenspel’, een driejarige (2010-2012) publiekscampagne van het Huis voor de Zorg, gericht op het bevorderen van de sociale cohesie in Limburg, met een speciaal accent op wonen, welzijn en zorg. • 5 mei 2011 Stichting Kunst Werk Plaats 64 Venray in ‘Binnenspel’ van 9 mei Maar bovenal maakt de KWP – niet in de laatste plaats door haar specifieke bedrijfsvoering en cultuur – het leven van een kwetsbare groep medeburgers aanzienlijk aangenamer. In de ‘Binnenspel’-aflevering van 9 mei staat de Stichting De KWP gaat uit van mogelijkheden Kunst Werk Plaats Venray (KWP) centraal. Ontstaan vanuit van mensen, niet van beperkingen een burgerinitiatief, is deze organisatie sinds een tiental jaren of onmogelijkheden. Volwaardigheid actief voor mensen met een achtergrond in de geestelijke en gelijkwaardigheid zijn daarbij kernbegrippen. Het coachen van de gezondheidzorg. Zij realiseert voor hen een maatschappelijk deelnemers is het hart van de KWP. Er is sprake van medeleven, maar steunsysteem met een zinvolle dagbesteding en –structuur als niet van medelijden. De insteek lijkt waarbinnen momenteel meer dan 90 personen geregeld actief in principe vanzelfsprekend, maar blijkt in de praktijk onorthodox zijn.

  • Jaren Geleden Zijn De Grenspalen Van De Provinciale Grens Brabant
    Jaren geleden zijn de grenspalen van de provinciale grens Brabant / Limburg, lopende vanaf de Vredepaal (Vredepeel) t/m de Eijndepaal (Helden Helenaveen) in ere hersteld. Dit project beter bekend als “De Peellimieten 1716” is in 2008 gereed gekomen, met als resultaat de reconstructie van zeven historische grenspalen en locaties. Wapen: Het Land van Cuijk Wapen: Het Land van Kessel In navolging van “De Peellimieten 1716”, is onder de hoede van het Historische Platvorm Venray (HPV) een samenwerkingsverband opgezet dat moet leiden tot het herstel van oude grenspalen en locaties tussen “Het Land van Kessel en het Land van Cuijk” (De huidige gemeentes: Venray, Boxmeer en St.Anthonis) met als doel: - Het zichtbaar maken van het historisch lijnenspel van de provinciegrens in het hedendaags ruimtelijk beeld van het landschap van De Peel en het Land van Cuijk. - Het verkrijgen van een samenhangend beeld van de historische en actuele provincie en gemeentegrens in het hedendaags ruimtelijk beeld. - Het toegankelijk en begrijpbaar maken van de grenspaallocaties voor het geïnteresseerde publiek en waar mogelijk onderdeel te laten zijn van reeds aanwezige en/of te ontwikkelen fietsroutes en wandelroutes in de directe omgeving. Er ontstaat als het ware een “cross-over” tussen cultuurhistorie en toerisme. Het samenwerkingsverband bestaat uit: de gemeentes Venray, Boxmeer en St Anthonis, diverse Heemkundekringen, Geocaching "GeoRooJ" en een aantal individuele medewerkers. De beschrijving van de grenspalen (GP) is genomen uit de inspectie van 1736 van een neutrale en onpartijdige commissie, tussen “Het land van Venray” en "Het Land van Cuijk”. De bijbehorende schouwing staat cursief beschreven. Definitieve namen van de Grenspalen zijn grotendeels ontleent aan de kaart van cartograaf Jacques Mulier van 1652, welke zich bevind in het hoofdstaatsarchief van Düsseldorf (Duitsland).

    Long-term neighborhood effects on integration of immigrants: The case of the 1951 Moluccan boatlift Merve Nezihe Özera* Bas ter Weelb Karen van der Wielc** January 31, 2017 Abstract Integration of immigrants to their host countries has been much studied. However, evidence on how physical characteristics of the neighborhoods they live affect their integration is limited and ambiguous. This paper aims to estimate the impact of the physical neighborhood characteristics on immigrants’ long term education and labor market outcomes. We use administrative data on Moluccan immigrants in the Netherlands to exploit the random variation in their settlements after they had been boatlifted from Indonesia in 1951. Moluccan immigrants were assigned to residential areas called ‘woonoorden’, which differed in terms of their distance to the local native community, educational infrastructure, employment opportunities nearby, and housing structure. We analyze education and labor market outcomes of children born in these settlements after 45 to 60 years. We find that physical characteristics matter for these second generation immigrants but impacts differ between girls and boys. A kilometer increase in the distance to the local community results in 0.7% less likelihood of women having at least an upper secondary school degree. For men, the education level is not affected. Instead, we find that a kilometer increase in the distance to the local community decreases men’s income by 1.2% while having no significant effect on women’s. Our findings are instructive on the potential impacts of the location of refugee camps on further integration of refugees to host countries.     Peel en Maas TV startte in 1993 als Kabelkrant Venray. Onder het motto 'meteen in beeld' werd dagelijks het laatste nieuws in de huiskamers gebracht. Sinds 2008 is deze vorm van Tekst TV uitgebreid met televisiereportages. Dagelijks zijn er uitzendingen in de vorm van een dagjournaal, weekjournaal en themaprogramma’s. Onderzoek wijst uit dat ongeveer 20% van de Venraynaren dagelijks kijkt. Wekelijks stemt ongeveer 70% minstens een keer af op onze zender. Peel en Maas TV is dus een interessante mediamogelijkheid voor ondernemers. Daarbij kunnen commercials worden opgenomen in Tekst TV of gekoppeld worden aan themaprogramma's en het journaal. Sponsoring van een van de themaprogramma’s behoort ook tot de mogelijkheden.
