Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television. When I was in college, a good friend told me about a series that featured six young people who discussed their lives over countless cups of coffee. This study over gender stereotypes is a content analysis. A content analysis is a way to understand text and image in numbers, and is a quantitative research method. “In the context of communication research, content analysis is a quantitative, systematic, and objective technique for describing the manifest content of communications,” said Treadwell (2014). In this study, gender stereotypes are content analyzed in the sitcom, Friends. It is important to study these stereotypes because of the relationship between gender stereotypes in media, specifically television, and gender stereotypes within society. The show, Friends, is a good sample for a study of gender stereotypes in media because it focuses on the interaction between the three female characters and the three male characters. It depicts the way twenty year olds wanted to be acting and living during that time. The plot of sitcoms redefines the idea of a normal, typical life of an American. It is also an interesting study because it allows for a broad time span to be analyzed, since it aired for 10 years (Poniewozik, 2004). This study uses coding of each stereotype to count the frequency that certain male and female stereotypes are portrayed in a sample of 25 episodes. The results are analyzed to either verify or disprove hypotheses made during the initial research process. -

Masculinities in the Television Series Friends
Masculinities in the television series ‘Friends’ A different kind of male friendship? A dissertation submitted to the University of Manchester for the degree of MA (Econ) in the Faculty of Economic and Social Studies Manchester, September 2000 by Vegard Iglebæk Women’s Studies Centre Department of Sociology Abstract This dissertation discusses friendships between men in the Northern American television series Friends and focuses upon two of the male characters, Joey Tribbiani and Chandler Bing. Friends shows six twenty-something men and women, sharing two flats in the middle of New York's Manhattan. Even though the series can be interpreted as conveying heterosexual values aimed towards a younger, mainstream audience, I argue that the relation between two of the men, being flatmates, is possibly representing different models of male friendships than usually seen in these kind of series. Personal disclosure and intimacy among heterosexual, Northern-European and American men tend to be restricted to specific arenas and situations, such as blissful moments at the football pitch or in situations of external crisis. Joey and Chandler's constant negotiating of degrees of intimacy is among the plots in the series. However, their relation stands out from the crowd compared to other series' narratives of relations between men. Joey and Chandler can be interpreted as widening the degree of acceptable personal disclosure, rather than being threatened by it. One might claim that they are opening up spaces for new ways of doing heterosexual masculinities, struggling to define modes of acceptable communication in their strictly heterosexual context. I am scrutinising a few scenes from selected episodes, discussing these issues from a sociological point of view, informed by cultural theory. -

The rapid accumulation of the 20% market share in the US is thanks to content like Friends: The Reunion, which was watched by 29% of the American streaming households on premiere day. Even though the US amassed half of all conversations around Friends: The Reunion, we saw engagement from over 100 countries, showing the reach that the show had over its 10 seasons. Conversations themed prominently around the special guests, with BTS and Lady Gaga being the most popular appearances. Special guests entertain. The one-off special was received with 35% positive sentiment. Recreations of epic scenes and narrations of anecdotes drove nostalgia, while inside information like secret crushes made fans ecstatic. One of the most enjoyable features of the show were the special guests as seen in the theme cloud above. Celebrity fans like David Beckham, and gems like The Barbershop Quartet, who actually starred in the series, further enhanced the nostalgic charm of the show. -

We augmented its training data using back-translation, and proposed a novel method to effectively find answers in paraphrased contexts, by comparing the sum of word embeddings. One other crucial aspect of languages comes in the form of everyday conversations, and understanding them is equally important for better machine comprehension on human languages. In this paper, we explore the FriendsQA dataset, first presented by Yang and Choi [4]. FriendsQA is a question answering dataset that contains 1,222 dialogues and 10,610 open-domain questions based on transcripts from the TV show Friends. It is the first dataset that challenges span-based QA on multiparty dialogue with daily topics. -

Black masculinity and White-cast Sitcoms Unraveling stereotypes in New Girl Marie Zafimehy Supervisor: Alma Persson, Gender Studies, LiU Master’s Programme Gender Studies – Intersectionality and Change Master’s thesis 15 ECTS credits ISRN: LIU-TEMA G/GSIC1-A—19/015-SE Marie Zafimehy 2 Master thesis - Gender, Intersectionality and Change ABSTRACT For decades, situational comedies — commonly named “sitcoms” — have been racially segregated on TV between Black-cast sitcoms and White-cast sitcoms. Extensive research has been led about representation of Black and White masculinities in this segregated context. This master thesis studies what happens when White and Black males are equally casted as main characters in contemporary sitcoms by offering a case-study of the 2011 sitcom New Girl (2011-2017). How is Black masculinity represented in New Girl, and in which ways does it intersect with contemporary societal issues (e.g. racial profiling, Black Lives Matter movement)? This case-study uses tools, methodologies and concepts, drawn from Black and Intersectional feminism as well as Feminist media studies. Based on a 25 episodes sample of the show, it implements Ronald Jackson’s traditional stereotypes classification and “Black masculine identity theory” (Jackson, 2006) to study representations of Black masculinity in New Girl, through its two main Black male characters, Winston and Coach. Given that representations of minorities in popular culture reflect and influence our contemporary society, the results offer new insights about how sitcoms, series and pop- culture productions in general can challenge traditional stereotypes and display a more progressive Black masculinity. 8 TV Power Games: Friends and Law & Order There is no such thing as a one-man show | at least not in television: one feature that all TV shows have in common is the combination of a large number of diverse contributors: producers, scriptwriters, actors, and so on. This is illustrated in Exhibit 8.1, which depicts the links between key contributors to the making and selling of a TV show. Solid lines repre- sent some form of contractual relationship, whereas dashed lines represent non-contractual relationships of relevance for value creation and value distribution. As is the case with movies, pharmaceutical drugs, and other products, the distribution of TV show values is very skewed: many TV shows are worth relatively little, whereas a few shows generate a very high value: For example, at its peak Emmy Award-winning drama ER fetched $13 million per episode.1 How does the value created by successful shows get divided among its various contrib- utors, in particular actors, producers and networks? Who gets the biggest slice of the big pie? In this chapter, I address this question by looking at two opposite extreme cases in terms of relative negotiation power: Law & Order and Friends. Law & Order | and profits The legal drama series Law & Order was first broadcast on NBC on September 13, 1990. (The pilot episode, produced in 1988, was intended for CBS, but the network rejected it, just as Fox did later, in both cases because the show did not feature any \breakout" characters.) By the time the last show aired on May 24, 2010, it was the longest-running crime drama on American prime time TV.
