TONIGHT’S GAME The Flyers play the front end of a set of back-to-back games here in Florida tonight as they take on the Panthers in their 37th game of the season and 18th on the road. The Flyers are 15-13-8 after a 2-1 shootout loss to Columbus on December 23 in their final game before the Christmas break. The Flyers are 1-2-1 in their last four games after a six-game winning streak that concluded on Dec. 16. After playing seven games in 12 days before the break, the Flyers are in a stretch of playing just twice in an eight-day period.

The Flyers played two road games immediately prior to Christmas, but this is the first of just two games between Christmas and New Years for the club, a time of year that is typically reserved for a long road trip while Disney on Ice occupies the Wells Fargo Center. That hasn’t happened since 1999-2000, when the Flyers visited Calgary on Dec. 27 and Vancouver on Dec. 29 before visiting the Islanders on Jan. 2. The last time the Flyers didn’t leave the Eastern time zone during the holidays was the 2000-01 season, when their five-game trip took them to Florida, Tampa Bay, Washington, New Jersey and Atlanta. The Flyers will wrap up the trip tomorrow with a visit to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

FLYERS VS. PANTHERS This is the second of three games this season between the clubs. The Flyers will return to South Florida in March.

That was followed by goals from Shayne Gostisbehere at 7:35, Claude Giroux at 13:22, and Dale Weise at 16:16. Jamie McGinn put Florida on the board with a power play goal with 3:50 remaining, and the scoring closed with a goal off a face-off that Florida won backwards 2/3 the length of the ice into their own empty net; the goal was credited to Valtteri Filppula. Michal Neuvirth made 40 saves to earn the win, while Roberto Luongo stopped 33 of 38. Stars of the Game: 1 – Michal Neuvirth; 2 – Shayne Gostisbehere; 3 – Claude Giroux.

LAST GAME Saturday, December 23, 2017 – Columbus 2, Flyers 1 (SO) at Nationwide Arena: Pierre-Luc Dubois was the only shooter to tally in three shootout rounds, giving Columbus the extra point in a goaltending exhibition on the part of both teams. Columbus took the lead late in the first period on a Seth Jones shot from the point that deflected off a Flyer in front and past Brian Elliott; the Flyers answered just under four minutes into the second period on a similar drive through traffic from Ivan Provorov that beat Sergei Bobrovsky. Neither goaltender yielded another tally till Dubois got through in the final shootout round, as Bobrovsky stopped all three Flyers shooters following 30 saves in regulation and overtime. Elliott stopped 35 for the Flyers. Stars of the Game: 1 – Sergei Bobrovsky; 2 – Brian Elliott; 3 – Pierre-Luc Dubois.

They have held the opponent without a PPG in eight of the last 11 games.

The Flyers have at least one PPG in seven of their last 10 contests, going 8-for-31 (25.8 pct) during that time. They were 4-for-30 (13.3 pct) during the preceding 10-game winless streak.

The Flyers have allowed 53 goals at 5-on-5 this season, which entering last night’s games was tied for second-fewest in the league behind Tampa Bay’s 52. The Flyers are outscoring opponents 62-53 at 5-on-5 this season.

The Flyers are 52.8 pct on faceoffs as a team this season, which was second-best in the NHL entering last night’s games. Claude Giroux is fourth in the NHL in faceoff percentage at 58.5 percent (292 for 499). His career-best faceoff percentage for a full season was 57.6 in 2015-16. Giroux is on pace to take approximately 1,136 faceoffs this season, which would be his lowest number of draws since the 2010-11 season – even in the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season, he took 1,182 draws in 48 games. He has been above 1700 in each of the last four seasons.

Brian Elliott has started 11 games in a row and 20 of the last 21 for the Flyers. He’s been in net for 1174:37 of the 1277:12 (20 gms plus OTs) the Flyers have played since the start of the Chicago game on November 9, and during that period is 8-5-6 with a 2.35 GAA and .926 sv%. Elliott was in net for all six games of the recent win streak and had a 1.48 GAA and a .949 sv% during the streak. He was named one of the NHL’s Three Stars in two straight weeks, and in doing so became the first Flyer to be named a star in consecutive weeks since Ilya Bryzgalov was the league’s #1 star in the consecutive weeks of March 12 & 19, 2012.

Jake Voracek had a five-game scoring streak come to an end in Columbus. He has not gone consecutive games without a point since Nov. 11-14. Since then, Voracek has four goals and 19 assists for 23 points in 18 games. He entered last night’s games tied for the NHL lead with 36 assists. Voracek is currently on a100-point scoring pace, which would severely eclipse his current career high of 81 points and would make him the first Flyer to hit triple digits since Eric Lindros in 1995-96.

Claude Giroux enters tonight’s game on a five-game assist streak (8A) and has two goals and 12 assists for 14 points in the last nine games. During that run, he has four two-point games and one three-point game. He has not gone more than two games in a row without a point this season.

Ivan Provorov has played 24:59 per game this season, which is 14th in the league. Provorov turns 21 in January. Since the NHL began tracking TOI in 1997, only four players who turned 21 or younger in a given season have averaged more than 25 minutes per game.

Dion Phaneuf - 2006-07 Drew Doughty – 2010-11 Erik Karlsson – 2011-12 Rasmus Ristolainen – 2015-16

Provorov has played the most minutes per game this season of any NHL player under the age of 26.

Robert Hagg is second in the NHL with 121 hits, trailing only the 123 of Chris Wagner. Hagg is currently on pace for 275 hits. In the period since the NHL began tracking stats in 2002-03, only one player has led the league in hits during his rookie season – Cal Clutterbuck, who had 356 hits in 2008-09. That is 57 more than the next highest, Matt Martin (299 in 2010-11). They are the only two players to surpass 275 hits in their rookie seasons. Radko Gudas is the only Flyer to surpass 275 hits, having done it in each of the last two seasons – 304 in 2015-16 (franchise record since 2002-03) and 280 last season.

He enters his third season as head coach of the Flyers. Hakstol, 47 (7/30/1968), came to the Flyers from the University of North Dakota, where he served as the head coach of the school’s hockey program for 11 seasons. During that time, Hakstol’s teams posted an overall record of 289-143-43 (.654). The Warburg, Alberta native led UND to the NCAA postseason in each of his 11 seasons, including seven appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four, most of any program in the country during that span.
