Field Notes - Spring 2016 Issue RETROSPECTIVE BOOK REVIEWS By Esley Hamilton, NAOP Board Trustee We have been reviewing new books about the Olmsteds and the art of landscape architecture for so long that the book section of our website is beginning to resemble a bibliography. To make this resource more useful for researchers and interested readers, we’re beginning a series of articles about older publications that remain useful and enjoyable. We hope to focus on the landmarks of the Olmsted literature that appeared before the creation of our website as well as shorter writings that were not intended to be scholarly works or best sellers but that add to our understanding of Olmsted projects and themes. THE OLMSTEDS AND THE VANDERBILTS The Vanderbilts and the Gilded Age: Architectural Aspirations 1879-1901. by John Foreman and Robbe Pierce Stimson, Introduction by Louis Auchincloss. New York: St. Martin’s Press, 1991, 341 pages. At his death, William Henry Vanderbilt (1821-1885) was the richest man in America. In the last eight years of his life, he had more than doubled the fortune he had inherited from his father, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877), who had created an empire from shipping and then done the same thing with the New York Central Railroad. William Henry left the bulk of his estate to his two eldest sons, but each of his two other sons and four daughters received five million dollars in cash and another five million in trust. This money supported a Vanderbilt building boom that remains unrivaled, including palaces along Fifth Avenue in New York, aristocratic complexes in the surrounding countryside, and palatial “cottages” at the fashionable country resorts. -

Ils proviennent du service de table du grand homme d’Etat anglais et grand collectionneur, Robert Walpole . Cet achat prestigieux a été fi nancé à parts égales entre le Musée et notre Société pour un montant total de 5,5 millions d’euros. Je remercie Madame Michèle Bimbenet-Privat, conservateur en chef au département des Objets d’art, de nous présenter dans ce Bulletin cette merveille de style de transition Louis XIV-Louis XV et que nous avons souhaité offrir au Musée pour compléter la fête qui se prépare lors de l’ouverture le 6 juin prochain des nouvelles salles des Arts décoratifs XVIIe-XVIIIe. Les deux pots à oille du service Walpole seront exposés en hommage aux Amis du Louvre dans la Chambre du duc de Chevreuse. -

John Singer Sargent's British and American Sitters, 1890-1910
JOHN SINGER SARGENT’S BRITISH AND AMERICAN SITTERS, 1890-1910: INTERPRETING CULTURAL IDENTITY WITHIN SOCIETY PORTRAITS EMILY LOUISA MOORE TWO VOLUMES VOLUME 1 PH.D. UNIVERSITY OF YORK HISTORY OF ART SEPTEMBER 2016 ABSTRACT Began as a compositional analysis of the oil-on-canvas portraits painted by John Singer Sargent, this thesis uses a selection of those images to relate national identity, cultural and social history within cosmopolitan British and American high society between 1890 and 1910. Close readings of a small selection of Sargent’s portraits are used in order to undertake an in-depth analysis on the particular figural details and decorative elements found within these images, and how they can relate to nation-specific ideologies and issues present at the turn of the century. Thorough research was undertaken to understand the prevailing social types and concerns of the period, and biographical data of individual sitters was gathered to draw larger inferences about the prevailing ideologies present in America and Britain during this tumultuous era. Issues present within class and family structures, the institution of marriage, the performance of female identity, and the formulation of masculinity serve as the topics for each of the four chapters. These subjects are interrogated and placed in dialogue with Sargent’s visual representations of his sitters’ identities. Popular images of the era, both contemporary and historic paintings, as well as photographic prints are incorporated within this analysis to fit Sargent’s portraits into a larger art historical context. The Appendices include tables and charts to substantiate claims made in the text about trends and anomalies found within Sargent’s portrait compositions. -

There is no evidence that Lundberg was aware of The Pilgrims Society. Continuing with number 2 in this series, as we progress towards the present, we will consider another 15 Pilgrims Society members from the leaked 1914 rosters. Unavoidably we will mention others significantly connected to them. Not all members of this nearly unknown organization have been, or are, precious metals suppressors. The organization is concerned with many other spheres---medicine, science, diplomacy, the military and war industries, insurance giants, universities, big media, and far more. This group remains present at this moment behind the scenes and traces to conspirators active in the Crime of ’73, the Panics of 1857 and 1837, both United States Banks, and much more. It can be anticipated that as they were in earlier times the source of precious metals price and monetary suppression, that the ringleaders in this arena today are also members. That’s why it’s important to maintain pressure on them to post rosters to public view. None of the nine rosters from bygone years were voluntarily released. 1) Henry Clews (1836-1923) is described by Wikipedia as having cofounded in 1859 “Livermore, Clews & Company, then the second largest marketer of Federal bonds during the Civil War.” In 1877 he was the principal in Clews & Company. -

Handout 3 Morgan and Vanderbilt - Documents J.P. Morgan One of the most powerful bankers of his era, J. P. (John Pierpont) Morgan (1837-1913) financed railroads and helped organize U. S. Steel, General Electric, and other major corporations. The Connecticut native followed his wealthy father into the banking business in the late 1850s, and in 1871 formed a partnership with Philadelphia banker Anthony Drexel. In 1895, their firm was reorganized as J.P. Morgan & Company, a predecessor of the modern-day financial giant JPMorgan Chase [& Co.]. Morgan used his influence to help stabilize American financial markets during several economic crises, including the panic of 1907. However, he faced criticism that he had too much power and was accused of manipulating the nation’s financial system for his own gain. The Gilded Age titan spent a significant portion of his wealth amassing a vast art collection. J.P. Morgan: Early Years and Family John Pierpont Morgan was born into a distinguished New England family on April 17, 1837, in Hartford, Connecticut. One of his maternal relatives, James Pierpont (1659-1714), was a founder of Yale University; his paternal grandfather was a founder of the Aetna Insurance Company; and his father, Junius Spencer Morgan (1813-90), ran a successful Hartford dry-goods company before becoming a partner in a London-based merchant banking firm. After graduating from high school in Boston in 1854, Pierpont, as he was known, studied in Europe, where he learned French and German, then returned to New York in 1857 to begin his finance career In 1861, Morgan married Amelia Sturges, the daughter of a wealthy New York businessman. -

Built 1881-83; Architect Richard Morris Hunt; addition 1907-08; Architect Charles A. Rich. Landmark Site: Borough of }1anhattan Tax Map Block 1855, Lot 50. On February 9, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hear ing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Association Residence for Respectable Aged Indigent Females (Association Residence for Homen), and the pro posed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 11). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Fourteen witnesses spoke in favor of designation. There were no speakers in opposition to designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The Association Residence for Respectable Aged Indigent Females, a prominent feature of the Manhattan Valley neighborhood of Manhattan's Upper West Side, was constructed in 1881-83 for one of New York City's oldest charitable institutions. The design, in a French-inspired style which recalls the Victorian Gothic, was by the "dean" of nineteenth-century American architects, Richard Monr.is Hunt. The building remains one of Hunt's few surviving significant New York City structures and a fine example of ninteenth-century institutional architecture. The Association In the midst of the nation's involvement in the War of 1812, a group of socially prominent New York City women formed an association in 1813 to aid women who were left poor wid ows by the current war or by the previous Revolutionary War. -
