Any changes will be announced in class or on OAK. Course Description Memory is a cognitive phenomenon that occurs each and every day. The people, places, and experiences that we remember help to define who we are and the decisions we make. Despite this, we know that memory is an imperfect process. This course explores the fallibilities of human memory and discusses how these weaknesses lead to challenges within our lives and society. Students will engage in scientific and professional writing that emphasizes applying material to their own experiences. Assignments will be drawn from psychological journals, articles from the popular press, and media portrayal of memory challenges. Objectives 1. Begin to understand and read literature in psychology and cognitive neuroscience 2. Develop scientific writing skills and communication 3. Learn to apply critical reasoning to everyday interactions and experiences Reading and Class Discussions The core of this class will be discussions from the assigned readings. All articles will be provided in OAK under “Assignments” or they will be printed and handed out in class. Participation in the discussion requires that you read the material prior to coming to class. In class we will discuss the scientific impact of the readings and how the findings are applied in the real world. It is important to try to understand the perspective of the author(s), as well as the message depicted to the general audience. Class Writing Assignments All assignments will be written in APA format. Papers should be typed, double-spaced with 1’’ margins on all sides, in 12 pt. Times New Roman font. Writing assignments should be uploaded to OAK by the posted deadline. Late submissions will not be accepted. Since this class is largely graded on writing assignments, students are expected to do their own original work. Plagiarism of any kind will be prosecuted to the fullest extent. Please see the Student Handbook for a review of Vanderbilt’s Honor System. Analytical Thinking Exercises (ATE): Students are required to read the provided articles per topic area. For each of the five topics, students must write one short essay. These exercises will require brainstorming, arguing theoretical positions, pointing out problems, thinking of implications, and discussing potential ways to improve the research. Students may draw on personal experiences and real world situations for these papers. Analytical thinking exercises will typically be 2-3 pages. Each essay will be worth 10 points, for a total of 50 points. Comparison Paper: To demonstrate an understanding of the literature, students will chose two articles to compare and contrast. This exercise requires the student to think about the theories and findings discussed by each paper. Students may draw from any topic(s) they wish but must receive approval for the two articles they wish to use. The comparison paper must be 4-6 pages and will be worth 40 points. Review Paper: Students will write a 10-12 page paper reviewing one of the topics discussed during the course. The broad topic will be assigned, however, students must expand on the issue for the purposes of the review. The review must evaluate and expand on the research being done in the field. A 1-2 page proposal of review topics will be due mid-semester. Students may draw from the assigned readings and outside articles pending the professor’s approval. The proposal will be worth 15 points and the final review paper will be worth 60 points. Revisions Students will have the opportunity to revise the Comparison and Review papers. Feedback from first drafts will be provided, however, the final grade will not be given until after a revision has been submitted. Presentation As a culmination to the class, students will lead a short presentation based on the topic of their review paper. Students will work in a group defined by the subject area. Each individual is expected to speak for 5-7 minutes. Presentations are worth 15 pts. Class Participation This course requires heavy participation from students. Discussions about readings are to be led by students and facilitated by Dr. Sexton. Additionally, attendance on group days is strongly recommended. Excessive absences will result in a penalty. Participation is worth a total of 20 pts. Grades Grades are calculated based on the writing assignments, final presentations, and class participation for a total of 200 points. A standard grading scale will be applied: 180 – 200 points = A, 160 – 179 points = B, 140 – 159 points = C, 120 – 139 points = D, Less than 139 points = F. The aim of the book is to show that, far from being the slaves of a blamable indolence, every time we are absent-minded or lost in thought, we are involved in an essential mental activity. Not only is mind-wandering a funda- mental component of our life (whether we want it or not, our mind meanders at night and for half the time during the day), but it also has a constructive and adaptive function that is crucial for facing the contingencies of a complex world. Without a wandering mind we would be stuck in the present, unable to invent stories and to escape the here and now through mental time travel. Mind-wandering takes us into unexplored regions of the unconscious mind that are inaccessible to the conscious will. Not only does this capacity allows us to build and consolidate the sense of our personality but it also helps to multiply our self into imagined possible selves and to expand the range of our experience. Creativity, too, lies in the randomness of mind-wandering, which makes possible unpredictable connections of ideas. The book therefore takes into account different forms of mind-wandering. Mental traveling depends on memory, which provides the material that feeds our imagination. Memory is so important to mind-wandering that some syn- dromes, such as amnesia and hyperthymesia, can impair the ability to mind- travel.

These reconstructions are prone to be influenced by several factors, which may result in false memories. A false memory is the recollection of an event, or details of an episode, that did not actually occur. Memory formation comprises at least three different sub-processes: encoding, consolidation and the retrieval of the learned material. All of these sub-processes are vulnerable for specific errors and consequently may result in false memories. Whereas, processes like imagery, self-referential encoding or spreading activation can lead to the formation of false memories at encoding, semantic generalization during sleep and updating processes due to misleading post event information, in particular, are relevant at the consolidation stage. Finally at the retrieval stage, monitoring processes, which are assumed to be essential to reject false memories, are of specific importance. Different neuro-cognitive processes have been linked to the formation of true and false memories. Most consistently the medial temporal lobe and the medial and lateral prefrontal cortex have been reported with regard to the formation of true and false memories. Despite the fact that all phases entailing memory formation, consolidation of stored information and retrieval processes, are relevant for the forming of false memories, most studies focused on either memory encoding or retrieval. Thus, future studies should try to integrate data from all phases to give a more comprehensive view on systematic memory distortions.

Chapter 5 The Science of Memory False-Memory Stories False Memory Syndrome Foundation members, largely those who have been accused of child abuse and expert witnesses on their behalf, have compelling reasons to insist that repressed memories of abuse be veri‹ed by clear and con- vincing empirical evidence, precisely the kind of evidence often lacking in incestuous abuse cases.1 While there are cases where a child with venereal dis- ease or a bleeding vagina is admitted to an emergency room and evidence obtained of abuse, signs of molestation may not be at all obvious. Adults have been mistakenly charged with abuse as a result of misreadings of physical evi- dence, resulting, for example, from incorrect assumptions about what “nor- mal” genitals and hymens are supposed to look like (Nathan and Snedeker, 180–81). And children enjoined to silence may long delay reports of abuse, with the result that physical marks of molestation, should they exist, would be healed by the time accusations are made. Without damning physical evidence, charges of incestuous abuse are hard to prove. If the memory wars re›ect deep ambivalence about the declining fortunes of patriarchal authority, they are sus- tained by problems with collecting incontrovertible evidence of sexual abuse, whether to vindicate accusers or the accused. What is debated are less tangible archives of the past. As we have seen, proponents of recovered memory focus on psychological processes, such as repression and dissociation, that long impede the recollection of sexual abuse.

Considerable research has demonstrated that stress can either inhibit or enhance memory depending on the level of arousal. This literature review will examine the role and effect of stress in general and in regard to other estimator variables (e.g., seriousness, weapons focus, and victim vs. bystander). Both field and laboratory studies will be examined. General trends, important caveats, and limitations will be reported. Despite the breadth of research in both eyewitness research and stress and memory, there is no recent comprehensive review of the effect of stress on eyewitness memory. E-mail: [email protected] 2 MNEMONIC TIME-TRAVEL EFFECT Abstract Given the links between motion and temporal thinking, it is surprising that no studies have examined the possibility that transporting participants back mentally towards the time of encoding could improve memory. Six experiments investigated whether backward motion would promote recall relative to forward motion or no-motion conditions. Participants saw a video of a staged crime (Experiments 1, 3 and 5), a word list (Experiments 2 and 4) or a set of pictures (Experiment 6). Then, they walked forward or backwards (Experiments 1 and 2), watched a forward- or backward-directed optic flow-inducing video (Experiments 3 and 4) or imagined walking forward or backwards (Experiments 5 and 6). Finally, they answered questions about the video or recalled words or pictures. The results demonstrated for the first time that motion-induced past-directed mental time travel improved mnemonic performance for different types of information. We briefly discuss theoretical and practical implications of this “mnemonic time-travel effect”.     Memory Search Michael J. Kahana Department of Psychology University of Pennsylvania Draft: Do not quote Abstract Much has been learned about the dynamics of memory search in the last two decades, primarily through the lens of the free recall task. Here I review the major empirical findings obtained using this memory-search paradigm. I also discuss how these findings have been used to advance theories of memory search. Specific topics covered include serial-position effects, recall dynam- ics and organizational processes, false recall, repetition and spacing effects, inter-response times, and individual differences. At our dinner table each evening my wife and I ask our children to tell us what hap- pened to them at school that day; our older ones sometimes ask us to tell them stories from our day at work. Answering these questions requires that we each search our memories for the day's events, and evaluate each memory's interest value for the dinner table conversa- tion. Our search must target those memories that belong to a particular context, usually defined by the time and place in which the event occurred. In the psychological laboratory, this task is referred to as free recall, and is studied by first having subjects experience a series of items (the study list), Then, either immediately or after some delay, subjects attempt to recall as many items as they can remember irrespective of the items' order of presentation. Unlike other memory tasks, free recall does not provide a specific retrieval cue for each target item. Typically, items are common words presented one at a time on a computer monitor.
