Abstract | Sunda porcupines (Hystrix javanica) belongs to the Order of Rodentia is an endemic animal of Indonesia. The aims of this study are to determine the types and histological structure of Sunda porcupine placenta. Data regarding the type and histological structure of Sunda porcupines’ placental organs can be used to support the conservation of Sunda porcupines. This research used two samples of placenta Sunda Porcupine from Ngawi, East Java. Placenta were fixed in Bouin’s solution for 24 hours. Tissues were processed by using paraffin method and cut in 5 µm thickness. Tissues slide were stained with Hematoxylin Eosin (HE) to identified histological structure of the Sunda porcupine placenta. Photomicrographs were using Optilab Image Viewer. The histological structure of the Sunda porcupine’s placenta were analyzed and reported descriptively. Macroscopically, the shape of Sunda Porcupine placenta is flat like a disc. Histologically, the thickest parts of Sunda porcupines placenta consist of chorioallantoic plate, labyrinth zone, trophospongium, decidua, metrial glands, myometrium zone. In conclussion, the placenta of sunda porcupine (Hystrix javanica) has been identified which has a discoid shape and is classified to the hemochorial type. ALLEN The Asiatic Expeditions under the direction of Dr. Roy Chapman Andrews have succeeded in assembling a splendid series of no less than fortv porcupines from China, mammals which, on account of their size and the difficulty of capturing and preserving them, are likely to be neglected by collectors. Particular credit is due Mr. Clifford H. Pope who secured the greater part of the specimens. Two genera are represented, the brush-tailed porcupine, Atherurus, and the more specialized crested porcupine, currently referred to Acanthion although regarded by some as inseparable from Hystrix. Both genera are found in China in only the southern half of the country. Mr. Pope's series from the island of Hainan contains eleven old and young of Acanthion which prove to con- stitute a very distinct island form allied to that of the Chinese mainland. Atherurus macrourus stevensi Thomas Atherurus 8tevensi THOMAS, 1925, Proc. Zool. Soc. London, p. 505. A single male skin without skull from Wanhsien, eastern Szechwan, is apparently a considerable extension northward of the recorded range of the brush-tailed porcupine in China. It agrees with A. stevensi Thomas, lately described from Tonkin, in the possession of numerous white woolly hairs among the bases of the spines, particularly noticeable over the shoulders. In typical A. macrourus from Malacca these are said to be few and browniish. For the present this Chinese form may therefore be considered the same as that from the extreme southern edge of the country, and is probably best regarded as a northern sub- species of typical macrourus of Malacca and the Malay Peninsula. -

FRAZIERI SYNOPSIS: The North American fossil record of porcupines (Erethizontidae) is reviewed. Com- parisons of cranial osteology, incisor enamel, auditory ossicles, and post-cranial elements of fossil samples with Recent Coendou and Erethizon samples indicate that all of the fossil porcupines in North America are congeneric with Erethizon. The following four species of Erethizon are recognized in the fossil record of North America: (1) E. bathygnathum appeared approximately 2.5 million years ago and lived in western North America during late Blancan and early Irvingtonian times. -

Abstract Aim: To identify the types of endocrine cells in the pancreas of the Sunda porcupine (Hystrix javanica) and its immunolocalization. Materials and Methods: Five adult H. javanica were used without sexual distinction. The presences of endocrine cells (glucagon, insulin, somatostatin, and pancreatic polypeptide [PP]) in pancreatic tissues were detected using the avidin- biotin-peroxidase complex method. Results: The fusiform, round, and oval form endocrine cells were detected in the islets of Langerhans and exocrine parts. Most of the insulin cells were found in the central area, glucagon cells were identified in the central and peripheral areas, and somatostatin and PP cells were detected in the mantle area of the islets of Langerhans. -

They are a typical indicator of warm climate and their distribution is restricted to tropical and subtropical zones. In China, porcupines are widely distributed in southern areas of the Yangtze River. However, fossil remainshavebeenidentifiedinafewsitesinnorthern China, among which Tianyuan Cave—near Zhoukoudian site— represents the latest known porcupine fossil record. So far, studies have focused mainly on porcupines’ husbandry and domestication but little is known about their intrafamilial phylogenetic relationships and evolutionary history. Results: In this study, we sequence partial mitochondrial 12S rRNA and cyt b genes for seven Late Pleistocene porcupine individuals from Northern, Southern and Central China. Phylogenetic analyses show that the Tianyuan Cave porcupines, which had been morphologically identified as Hystrix subcristata, have a closer relationship to Hystrix brachyura. Conclusion: Together with morphological adaptation characteristics, associated fauna, and climate change evidence, the molecular results reveal that a Late Quaternary extirpation has occurred during the evolutionary history of porcupines. For 23 years, Hodgson was posted to Nepal as an official of the British East India Company—at a time when Nepal was virtually terra incognita to Europeans. Hodgson was an energetic polymath who, in addition to carrying out his political and diplomatic duties, published widely on the ethnography, linguistics, architecture, religion and natural history of Nepal and the Himalayas. He published more than 140 scientific papers on zoological subjects, ranging from descriptions of new species to checklists of the fauna. A projected massive volume surveying the birds and mammals of the central Himalaya was unfortunately never completed due to lack of funds, but the present paintings are taken from sketchbooks which Hodgson presented to the Zoological Society of London toward the end of his life. -

For the outline shape, the crenulated crown of (SC6-2) surface is without a preprotocrista and has an oval and elongated outline shape with a more flared lingual crown surface. For the P4, the presence of distinct accessory cusp behind and in front of the protocone, a hypocone and a protoconule, respectively has been reported by Hooijer (1948) for a small number of upper P4s from Padang (for example, Figs. 3, 5 and 6, Plate. VI). The marginal borders around the protocone for all the upper P4s are smooth and without indication of any accessory cusp, as is the situation seen in most of the Padang fossils. The upper P4s of Vietnam assigned to either P. p. kahlkei or P. hooijeri (Schwartz et al., 1995) are distinctly less crenulated than our samples and those of modern species. Even the heavily worn specimen (BDC 1-28U) with crenulations is only weakly discernible and shows a degree of crenulations greater than the teeth reported in Schwartz et al. (1994 & 1995). Neither specimen seems to have any cingulum developments on either lingual or buccal surfaces whereas a lingual cingulum has been noted for a specimen from Guangdong Province (YFG 01, Gu et al., 1987). For the M3, the subtriangular shape of (CC 6-3) is typical of an upper M3 and is different from the more triangular outline (owing to a more reduced vestigial metacone) of the upper M4 reported from the Padang materials (Hooijer, 1948). This is the only Pongo specimen showing signs of dental pathology in our collection. A carious lesion seems to have developed from the anterior interproximal area and later expanded into the nearby occlusal surface, causing the collapse of part of the enamel crown around the protocone and exposing the underlying dentine. -
