Catholic Charismatic Renewal serving the The newsletter of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. Melbourne, Australia. www.ccr.org.au Mind, Body and Spirit

We met with people whose parents had been in Catholic Charismatic Renewal in the past but thought their parents were “over the top”. Once having received for God to enter their lives said they had not ever experienced that amount of peace before. It was a profound experience for us and strengthened the need to take an example of the leadership style of – go where the people are. We will participate again this coming November – and to this end Renewal Day in November will be moved from the 19 November to the 12 November so that more prayer teams can be available. This is an expensive exercise and you can help us by your and your donations. Not quite knowing what to expect we were staggered to be met with greetings like, “glad to see you guys here”! Our estimation was that 90% of the visitors (from all over Australia) were self-confessed “retired” Catholics. Comments like “I used to be Catholic or I was an altar boy when younger” or the “ has no oomph!” became common place as we moved through the 3 days. Yet, only a few refused a prayer when offered.

Because people have God, I need to go back to the last time I was aware he high expectations of their leaders. A leader must always was speaking to me and to think again about what he was lead, and this means knowing what God is asking of the saying then. Adam blamed Eve, Eve blamed the snake. Neither took responsibility for their actions. Jim reminded us that love and relationship is always a choice. We need to remain rooted in Christ and Catholic Charismatic Renewal needs to stay connected to Jesus. Jim Murphy led and taught us in an amazing week where we were gently challenged to commit ourselves to be merciful and not just do merciful things. We are to define our lives by whom we are in Christ Jesus and we must first experience His mercy before we share His mercy with others. The fruit of the Spirit is a package, they are the personality traits of God’s nature and we are to allow ourselves to be transformed into His nature. The presence of the Holy Spirit was tangible as we worshiped but also as Jim recalled many stories from his journey travelling across the United States carrying the cross of Christ. Many a tear was shed as he recalled the mercy of our God who healed and restored ordinary people who were either moved to embrace the cross he carried or for whom he was led to pray. One such story was about a man who had drowned as a young boy and had been resuscitated. His disability as a result of this accident was not evident at first but caused great concern as his behaviour became problematic for his family as he grew. He was eventually put to live out in the shed and not allowed to interact with his brothers and sisters. Greatly troubled this man now lived in a rundown house and looked dishevelled. His sister asked Jim, “the man with the cross”, to call in on her brother. Jim obliged and said a prayer with him leading him in a prayer of forgiveness Christine Grech but then had to leave that town. When he returned he wanted to catch up with this man and went to the house which to his surprise was now quite tidy. He asked a young man if he knew where the man who lived in this house was now. Jim was shocked when the young man revealed that it was he. He was unrecognisable as the original elderly man. God had restored and healed this man so that he was able to be in relationship with his community. This is the mercy of God in action. Jim explained that Mercy is a God thing. We need to be connected to the person of mercy to be merciful. He warned that there is no substitute for prayer.

We must always be aware of those three recognized areas of sin which often face leaders: money, sex, power. There’s only one solution for unconfessed sin – acknowledge and confess it without delay, knowing that the Lord will always forgive and restore us. When we do this, another blockage to hearing the Lord’s voice is removed. There may be other personal reasons why we as leaders are no longer hearing from God, but in my personal experience the most common one is that I am not giving enough of my time to just being with the Lord in prayer. The busier we are, the more we must protect our quiet time with the Lord. Yes, we must of course deal with any sin in our lives, maintain good relationships with others, and make sure we are not becoming personally ambitious, but above all we must spend quality time with the Lord every day if we are to hear his voice. He is always there for us – are we always there for him?

“More Love, More Power, More of You (God) Offer it up! in my life” is a well renowned song that is often By LENYCE WILLASON sung by Charismatics with great gusto. Yes, MORE, MORE AND MUCH MORE is what God Recently it took me just over 2 hours, on a hot humid wants to give us. So what’s stopping us from evening, to travel 5 kms! All that could be seen in front receiving the “MORE” that God has prepared for us? Is of me were the brake lights of cars and trucks as every lethargy assailing you? Or could it be indifference? Or even few minutes I crept another inch forward. Tapping the something else that’s paralysing you such as fear, distrust steering wheel with impatience I found myself pondering or complacency. Then there’s that dreaded ‘comfort zone’. what a person is meant to do about such unpleasantries: We can all fall into that trap. Or perhaps it might just be a being stuck in such traffic comes close behind a visit to simple thing like “I’ve heard it all before?” But have you? the dentist in my book. NO. NO. NO. Guess what? There’s always MORE to what While sitting there, not moving, grumbling away at the God wants you to receive. There’s heaps MORE! hot car I heard a “blast from the past”! ‘OFFER IT UP’ If we fall under one of the above categories well then we’re said Sr Dolores as we said the Morning Offering before simply limiting GOD. Yes, that’s right, we’re limiting GOD school commenced. ‘OFFER IT UP” said my mother and what he wants to achieve with our help. Let’s say God whenever we griped about some sacrifice in our young has a plan for your life. Well, that plan can’t be realised lives. It seems as if it was in fashion back then to “offer it without a little help from you. God is not a Puppeteer and up”. Not so anymore. It seems as if we have lost sight of we’re not Puppets simply dancing to His tune and God this simple message and yet there is grace and power in does not want to simply push us around like pieces on a this traditional Catholic practice. Chessboard. God does not want us to do anything against Lent is a fitting time to recall this practice. The truth is our free will. So when St Paul says in Eph 3:20 “ Now to that when we offer up our setbacks, difficulties and him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask dissatisfactions in union with Jesus, we share with him in or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us” his work of redemption. then it is God working through us because we have allowed One of the mysteries of the Christian life is that nothing is Him to enter into our hearts and our lives. To the degree that wasted. Whatever we call our least favourite things, like we allow God to enter in is the degree to which he will work sitting in a long line of traffic when you are really eager to in and through us. get home, can become a channel of grace as we offer it Have you stopped to think what might be stopping you from up in union with the cross of Jesus. Everything can be knowing and experiencing to a much greater degree the offered to God, and when it is it will help us to draw closer almighty power and hand of God on your life? Could it be to Jesus and release more of his healing love into our fear? Do you let it control you? 1 John 4:18 says “There is lives. Sometimes, as I discovered, it is the only sensible no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because thing to do. As I began to offer up my impatience for the fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not lost souls in the world I found myself praising God for the made perfect in love.” Could it be that you don’t trust God blockage the traffic was causing. This in turn released enough with your life’s problems? Proverbs 3:5 says “Trust a sense of peace within me and I found myself actually in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own thanking God for the predicament because it meant that I understanding;” Then again, you might just think that God is had more time in that day to draw near to him. only interested in other peoples’ lives but not in yours so you Perhaps we could try during this season of Lent to get back become complacent forget to consult the Lord in all things, into the habit we learned as children. Perhaps also we can but 3:15-17 says “'I know your deeds, that you teach it to our children. OFFER IT UP! Unite yourself to are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot 'So Jesus in sorrow or in joy and offer it up! It really does make because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will a difference. spit you out of My mouth. 'Because you say, "I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing," and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.” So how do you receive More Love, More Power, More of God in your life? We must surrender to God and abide in Him. Then be prepared to give away or share what we have received as gift so as to remain in the anointing of God e.g. remember Elijah’s encounter with the widow at Zarephath. She obeyed the ’s request and her jar never ran dry and her meal was not spent. Be partakers of the refreshing wellspring of the Holy Spirit for it never runs dry. Then watch and see how God will work in your life. You will receive More Love, More Power, More of God in your life.
